Thank you, much. Your art is wonderful and inspiring. You’re a better teacher and demonstrator than most. I hope your channel will continue to grow. Cheers!
FYI I discovered a shortcut for creating the centre guide: you can type "50%" in the "New Guide" dialogue. Great videos! Thanks for the help and all the details.
Oh nice!! That's a great tip, thanks!! I always wished I could do negative values like -.25in to go in from the right. I'm glad they have the percentages though. That's so cool!
You mentioned an extra .25 title safe guide in your other video on the interior pages, do you think that is applicable to the cover also? Thanks for the videos :^ ]
Hi, thanks so much for your kind words! Re: templates - Aren't the templates in Microsoft word? Or do they have templates for Photoshop? I haven't seen Photoshop ones. But I would definitely recommend Photoshop over Word 100% because Photoshop was made for creating graphic layouts, so it's just going to be a million times easier in so many aspects, from creating the design to exporting the final product. I can see using Word for the inside pages of a chapter book, but in my opinion it is not ideal for any kind of graphic layout like a book cover or children's book pages. Hope that helps! 🙂
Thank you for this! Your videos are the most helpful self-publishing tutorials I've seen on RUclips so far. I have a question I hope you can answer: are there any disadvantages to selecting a custom size for your book on Amazon? I'd like my children's picture book to be 8 x 8, but that size isn't standard with Amazon.
Aww thank you so much for your kind words!! ❤️❤️ I believe the only disadvantage is that your book won't be eligible for expanded distribution (where it would be available in bookstores). For me I didn't worry about it, because I'm like, getting your book in a bookstore is like winning the lottery 🤣 I guess it mostly depends on your goals for the book. For me it was just to have it for sale on Amazon.
@@HeatherCashArt appreciate your answer. Do you happen to know if "this book belongs to"' is a good option to add on as a page? if so is this to be added along with copyright, dedication and title page before the story starts? thanks a million
@@etorn5762 yes I love the idea of "this book belongs to"! It adds some cute personalization. I recommend having it as the very first page, before copyright, cover page, etc!
"Remember, the pages isn't like the number of pieces of paper, it's actually the pages, so if you were to number the pages in your book" what does this mean?? In your previous video you had 26 pages including the blank cover page, how did you get to 32? I'm overthinking this and would love clarification.
Hi! Don't worry about 26 vs 32 pages - I probably just counted wrong 😝 Basically what I meant by that statement, is imagine tearing a page out of a book. It's 1 piece of paper, but technically it's 2 pages, because if you number the pages of the book, it would be for example page 3 & 4. Does that make sense? So your PDF will have the number of pages, not pieces of paper.
It's true, Photoshop is hard to learn! When I first tried Photoshop I hated it. It wasn't until I took a class on it back in college that I really got comfortable with it. I did try to make my tutorials as easy as possible for someone with zero photoshop experience. But, I do agree with you about Canva - it is pretty amazing for beginners! It is so easy to figure out. And I'm constantly amazed by some of the features it comes with. I was thinking of making these same tutorials but using Canva!
@@HeatherCashArt Canva tutorials would be AMAZING! I am currently formatting my first children’s book there, however, the process is being stuck. To begin with, I have my illustrations in the required dimensions with bleed in PNG, so I only have to add the text. Additionally, I have a list of Canva fonts that have open license for commercial use. It seems to be pretty easy to add and format the text. Yet, I came across with 2 issues. First, my illustrator sent me all the double spreads PNG zip files, and when I downloaded them in Canva, they automatically turned into JPEG files there and they didn’t match the page dimensions being much smaller (we accidentally discovered later that using online zip rather than computer installed would not create this problem). But, when I eventually managed to download them as PNG in Canva in the original size, they were a little larger than Canva pages, and I simply fitted the size of 2 single spreads by hand which was approximate, coz I didn’t find that option how to divide double spread into two equal single spreads. I am stuck here. Second, when I wanted to eventually download my PDF file, I chose PDF for print version and it clearly showed me the options CMYK/RGB that I was able to select (it was in my trial Canva Pro month). When my trial period was over, that option completely disappeared, so I am not sure whether it is available only in Canva pro and I should subscribe for it, or it was simply switched to another place ))) To sum up, I have two main issues using Canva. They are fitting the illustration size and switching between CMYK/RGB modes. Taking both points into consideration, I hope it will be helpful for you to create Canva tutorials.
@@anab1872 Thanks so much for providing all of those details! I looked into it, and yes exporting as CMYK does appear to be only for canva premium. Although honestly, with my children's book I was lazy and did not convert to CMYK and it came out fine. So maybe you can just export it as RGB and when you order your author copy, see if it came out ok and if it didn't, you can deal with it then? For fitting the illustration size - if you would like, you can email me one of the spreads (heather@heathercash.com) and I will figure out the best way to fit them and then make a short private video for you. 😊
Hello Heather. You have given me confidence to tackle my cover. Thank you so much. 💖Just wondering if it is possible to save a single layer from one file to another file?
Hi! Do you want to copy the layer to a different file? If so, you can have both files open and have that layer selected, and then go to layer -> duplicate layer, and you'll be able to choose which document. If you want it in a new document all by itself, just do the same thing but instead of choosing which document you can actually choose "new document". Hope that helps!!

Hi. I tried doing the center and I am not sure why my line center guide wont show at the center. Do you perhaps know? Thanks
Are you sure you are doing inches and not pixels when you create the guide? Also, make sure you have guides turned on (View -> Show -> Guides)
