  • On the last day of timetabled passenger services on the S&D - Saturday 5 March 1966 - the very last service train to leave Evercreech Junction had a coffin loaded on board. It was marked simply 'S&D died today'.
During the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the closure of the S&D line in 2016, the Trust recreated this event at its base at Washford on the West Somerset Railway.
This took place during a special gala in March 2016 where the WSR hired in preserved steam locomotives that had worked on the S&D line, or another member of the same class where the original numbered locomotive had not survived scrapping.
The procession was led by our then Chairman, the late Godfrey Baker.

Who volunteered to "ride" in the coffin?

Well, there's a question! Presumably, it was empty......
