A holiday in Bournemouth always meant rides to Bath. I remember leaning out of the window between Radstock and Wellow and marvelling at the earthworks of the Somerset Coal Canal weaving under and out from the trackbed. The canal was filled in and replaced by a horse drawn plateway and then came the S&D on top of that. There was a space between the two level crossings at Radstock where you could look down and see a small part of the formation of the plateway.
Fantastic work, keep it up and thanks for sharing.
8:35-9:10, interesting to see Skol and the slightly later Fishtail clips. They were an common early fixing when welded rail began replacing jointed track, and great to see reclaimed track hopefully getting a second life.
It would be great to see the S&D live again, and undo the criminally destructive waste of a strategically valuable line, quite apart from the many other benefits it did and could again offer.
Well Done that young Man "Sean" Many Thanks for your time sharing this piece with us, it looks fantastic around the Station area, slowly coming back from being wiped of the map.
You know what mate, without the likes of you this would all be forgotten. I was watching and guessing where you were from my limited knowledge of the SD&JR, really great video and I seriously hope that further track is laid to the limits of possibility. And to those three who disliked this video (whats to dislike??) get off your armchair warmed backsides and go and help, otherwise shut up. Keep it up lad.
Nice video, I run a long this footpath all the time and it's been nice to see the progress. It's exactly 0.95 of a mile from the station to the start of the landfill and 2 miles to the old Chilcompton station site. The area that includes the landfill (from the start of the landfill to the end of the tunnel) is 400m and based on your guess of where the tunnel starts, the landfill that needs clearing would be about 200m (but it could be as much as 300m). I can't wait till the day when I can ride a steam train through that tunnel!
thanks for your comment ..lots of people are waiting for the line to be extended
XxBec3509 I know this would never happen due to huge costs etc but I was looking at Google aerial imagery and it seems like theoretically it is possible (based on the land still being intact) to restore the line from Radstock to Midsomer Norton, Chilcompton and also to Binegar, which would give 6 miles of track! Perhaps our great grandchildren can take on that challenge!
Nice. Back in the late 70s I lived just down the hill from the tunnel. The pillbox I had forgotten all about, but we used to play in/around it.
I think the tunnel/cutting were filled with waste not long after.
Lovely video Sean. I wrote a mystery novel set on this line, where the infill was cleared and the old pillbox discovered. Looks like that could come true!
Very interesting Sean - thanks for the tour of the line and the extension. You've saved it for history - it'll be nice for others to look back upon. Cheers, Brian
Brilliant Sean. Well done. Very informative and great to see the terrific progress the boys are making. Keep these coming please Sean. For those of us Members who live along way from MSN it's a really great way to keep in touch. Won't be long before we're through the infill and en-route to Chilcompton. Many congratulations to all at MSN for the hard work and dedication. We're proud of you all.
You saying about the shunting signal in your garden reminded me of the chap over in Bruton I think it is, who has a couple full signal frames setup in his garden with attached signals.
Thanks for a very interesting trip, I,ve just looked at the 1:25000 OS map and they don't have the pill box marked...
I have discovered that the trackbed ALL still belongs to Railtrack and another rail company. The people using the Chilcompton tunnels can be told to LEAVE at any time a railway is going to be relaid through them! Also all the people who have mysteriously ‘grown’ their gardens or property ONTO the trackbed , will be told to remove it or else! This seems to apply to a LOT of so called ‘adverse possession’! Good old Railtrack!!
Lots of nice work here!!
Like your brake van you own👍
Not my brakevan I'm just doing the work.. Thanks for looking
Has this heritage line got any steam locos?
Thinking of becoming a volunteer myself. Do you think you are going to buy a larger locomotive like a 37 or 31, when the track extends?
plop head I
Well done.
Awesome progress !
gorgeous I'm assuming your a volunteer there which I must have miss heard you say you own the breakvan
Thanks for looking ..its not my brakevan I'm just doing the work .but it is mine for now because of my effort it will alway be "my" brakevan
Yes I'm a volenteer here
XxBec3509 oh cool why don't you put a secret mark on it
RIDE the SOMERSET & DORSET line in 1963 @ 4mins 10 secs shows the tunnel, it does not look to be very long in length, I think the filled in cutting is longer than the tunnel .
progressing well with track laying. will be a mammoth task to clear the infill and restore the tunnel mouth underneath
Not to much infill ..will be good to clear it
We can do it !!, The best of luck for all that team that wants to revive a great part of that great railway, That for me, To see images of his rising removes my soul, I hope in the future to see something Of that majestic and melancholy railroad, A hug and continue this way so that part of the history of the same is preserved.
thankyou
Thank you I enjoyed that
OMG is this really the old S&DJR track bed? They said it would never be saved as a preserved railway! SUPERB would be great to see Evercreech back on the tracks. Wonderful video.
Just been watching the ESR at work and realise how close to Shepton they are! It would be great if they could somehow link into the S&D providing MORE route mileage
Very interesting indeed.
cool vedio
the old hull to honsea rall way line
Sadly going to cost a fortune for the infill to be removed.
Nice video, but one comment. ''slow down'' you have plenty of time, after a time you have to look away, makes the eyes go funny. just take your time. this could be a fantastic film.
James Type thank you for your comment. i think that is good advice. thanks Sean
Slow down with the Camera! !
Olooooooooo
