The Trust started as the S&D Railway Circle in 1966 - before the S&D line closed - with the intention of collecting artefacts and information about the S&D. Originally based at Radstock on the S&D, but unable to obtain a long-term lease, the Trust moved to Washford in 1976.

The pride of our collection is 7F freight locomotive No. 53808, originally built for the S&D in 1925 as S&D No. 88. Our smaller locomotive, named Kilmersdon and built in 1929 by Peckett’s of Bristol, was the last steam locomotive to work the Somerset coalfield. There are three S&D coaches in our collection; Coach 4, a First Class carriage built by the S&D at Highbridge in 1886 has been fully restored and there are two other Third Class coaches awaiting restoration.
