My best board ever was the Hstreet Tony mag, kid holding the cross, vert version. Only recently I learned that board had an special concave and...... a 16 wheelbase!. 9.75 and it felt skinny after the boards I used to ride back in the 80s, and had a nose! I will definitively drill a 16 wheelbase on some 33 long board. T Mag swears that's the best for stable riding on vert/bowls.
I’m definitely with you on customizing your board, even if I only have it for 3 weeks I still like that feeling of walking by it and seeing _my_ board.
yes i sanded the graphic on my flight deck (Andy egg 🥚) and stained and spray painted on it with some stencils, then clear coated over and I'm so in love with my board. but sometimes it's nice to just put a board together without too much fuss. ever put lots of time into a grip job only to break the deck prematurely? the worst!!
Great point about the customed grip tape art/collage effect. For me, putting a little thought and effort into distinguishing what's my nose and whats my tail(on popsicles) makes a huge difference when ridin..
8.62 with 159 Indy’s custom grip being a placebo is a interesting concept. I felt like my dragons slowed down a bunch too, maybe it was the bearings. I’ll have to try em with new bearings before I toss em. 97 spitfire Jeff Carlyle work a treat
I bought new bearings with the dragons. They were faster than my formula4 101 or 99 BUT I skate gritty street, some places were unskateble with F4. I also dig the 159 on a 8.6 board, my madness thinks the board should be leveled with the wheels, a bit of axle or nuts should be showing but they never do. I have an 8 with ace classics 8.375, perfect match X)
Awesome! Wider trucks also use the wheel wells, shorter trucks can sometimes get less than half of that extra clearance. I do like shorter trucks though, so just dremel them out.
I have been skating that exact same deck since June of 2022. I love the wheel wells bc I ride loose trucks. My next board definitely needs wheel wells. I ride polar grip tape with the naked lady on it. Polar uses jessup for all their grip which I like bc it is softer than mob
Totally agree, as long skateboarding as an art and expression of oneself, the board should have a personality of its own, just as the owner. Even if it won't last that long.
I just got an uncut deck from a local deck maker specifically because it's so hard to find short wheelbase with more width. I also like more mellow kicks. I cut my own out similar to that shovel style you had. I also put wheel wells in.
I’m confused by this statement. Everyone makes wide boards with short wheelbases now. Girl, Chocolate, Anti Hero, Creature, Santa Cruz. I have a hard time finding longer wheelbases that aren’t +33” long or shaped.
Custom grip has always been a big thing for me. Looking down to a blank sheet of black grip just doesn’t motivate me to skate and it feels less personal.
I'm curious about this too. I set up a 70s style board with OJ Super Juice wheels. They're 78a but still incredibly fast. That really surprised me. Now I'm curious what OJs can do at higher durameters.
Mostly depends on people's shoe-size obviously.. but I'm also a huge fan of shaped boards. Though I am giving this wide (8.8) SC pseudo Hand everslick board.. and it's super fun on transition! Makes it feel like a meallow/streamer kinda ride.. (and yes, I actually will be putting my kids' original art on the top, w/clear grip) to distinguish what's my nose/tail.
I’m 31 now, I have a 3 year old son. So about two years ago I bought a complete off someone who had like generic everything except the deck is a zero I believe. But back when I was 15-16 I always skated FLIP 7.5s, and I decided to get my old trucks, wheels and bearings out to put on this board. Problem is the deck is like an 8-8.25 so when I put all my old stuff on the board just sucked, always going to the left. I re learned how to kickflip, do no comply 180s, typical stuff. But man in my younger years there wasn’t very many flip tricks I couldn’t do. I skated mostly flat ground, I had a square rail, a round kink rail, and my dad and I built an 8ft long ledge just made of wood and square metal coping. And I had a pretty long drive way freshly paved perfect for power slides so a lot of my bs flips were catch and power slide. But now I’m still only like 5’8 135 pounds. But it seems so hard to find any 7.5s or even 7.63 decks let alone FLIP decks. I was always a flip trick skater, but obviously back then, in much better shape. But my son loves watching me skate and I definitely need a better set up. Those deck rails you put on were never even around when I skated! But once it gets warmer out I may just have to get me a smaller deck that I’m more familiar with because back 15 years ago street skating with an 8 sized deck was almost unheard of. Now I go back to like skatewarehouse.com and everything is 8 and bigger. I think there was one flip board that was a 7.5. Back when flip had those holographic graphics I had a Geoff rowley one, (my favorite skater at the time” and a sick holographic Mark Appleyard one. I wish my mom didn’t get rid of all my retired decks or even broken ones. But I was never a transition skater. I skated pyramids and mini ramps but no grabs or big airs.
Hope you enjoy geeking out on my new setup. Always open to feedback!
U could glue that jessup at 1st, not to strong, then cut a hole with size and well pleace u need for sticker grip.
btw, I draw my own - majin Vegeta ssj1 on my jessup grip \o/

Those Polar boards with wheel wells are epic! More skateboard brands need to adopt this feature
Couldn’t agree more about the board customisation - I love having a relationship with the way my board looks
I'm diggin the Creature "Stump" 8.5 deck with the shorter Wheelbase at 14.25

I'm screaming in my head, DRAIN THE POOL DUDE! FOR GODS SAKE ITS IN YOUR BACK YARD! SHRED IT 💪🤙

I always choose jessup if it’s available.
Only off the roll though.
The strip always seem dried out
That pool is so sweet! I Love the backyard.
Appreciate it!
I just got my first Santa Cruz VX deck. The McCoy twin shape
thats such a great board dude! one of my favorites
Perfect set up! As always, great video
I just love the aesthetics. I miss you riding black Aces on those white Polars though.
Mate, your backyard looks almost Vaporwave. Love it.
Yes bro, 8.75 with wheel wells and oj 56mm....only difference is I run indies. Thinking about trying ace next though....
If you haven't tried them highly suggest it!
Indy’s are releasing the stage 4 Indy (the truck aces are based on)
Good informational video as always. That deck is very nice 🤩

Since you’re sitting by the pool side… have to say you look like and remind me of Sid from lords of dog town hahaha

Crazy how much science goes into skating
Love me some Jeezup also (lol) The Mob rips my fingers to shreds..lol
Custom grip has always been a big thing for me. Looking down to a blank sheet of black grip just doesn’t motivate me to skate and it feels less personal.
OJs over spitfire? idk... f4s are like the gold standard after I've tried looots of wheels and formulas. might have to try some!
I'm curious about this too. I set up a 70s style board with OJ Super Juice wheels. They're 78a but still incredibly fast. That really surprised me. Now I'm curious what OJs can do at higher durameters.
I love polar decks with the wheel wells
Zack, would those OJs be a mid point between Spitfires F4s and Bones STF 83b?
makes hyour boards break easier too. also goes dead once you kick up a little puddle
You nailed the tape. You coulda kept the pink on the side in lieu of filling it in... but it's your board!

Try the Ace 1/16th inch shock pads.
where did you get that awesome shirt?
you ripped that park for sure.

Get some Lil Jawns rails! They’re the best money can buy.
what skatepark were you at in end of this video?
lets test the board by draining your pool and skating it!
a lot of the polar decks labeled as ‘14.5wb’ have been actually 14.375
Gotta try lil jawns rails
Quasi eggs/football with the 13.875 wheelbase
awesome stuff
What’s with the head on your counter😂
Polar p9
are hollow aces worth it in your opinion??
No, I like the classics.
Nice setup! Get some SKF bearings, best value for money.
I want to try those!
@@ZackDowdy SKF supply Airbus and Boeing. And they're made in Europe, no 3rd world cheap labor stuff.
@@PhaidrusSKF has 38 factories all over the world. Many in third world countries.
@@vorpalblades Possibly. However, all SKF bearings I've bought over the years, for my bikes too, were made in Europe (France and Italy mostly).
idk why everyone hates on jessup so much! its pretty much all I've ridden since the early 2000's. back then people weren't grip tape snobs haha
I’m with you not sure what the beef is either?
@D Money it's weird. It's like "mob or nothing" these day's
Yo Zack what's your height, weight, shoe size? Would be nice to know regarding your setup
5 11', 160 pounds and size 10!
Gotta get Bronson raws
I LOVE Jessup!
luvu bro
Redo that pool (skate-able) at 100K followers.
polar p9 not polar p2
First btw love your vids
I’m just watching the grip tape paper float around in the pool
😅
8.75 is a boomer board
Is this meant to be derogatory, or is this an admission of having your diaper being changed, while others were skateboarding?
@@TheAnimeist and now boomers are having their diapers changed while I'm skating
- Shorty's
- Jessup
- Foundation 8.25
- Tiago Lemos 144's
- super REDS
- OJ'S team hardline
