I was sitting in the audience for this one, 16 years old. It’s the reason I’m a professional musician today. Still can’t believe I was fortunate enough to catch this. Mind blowing
One very optimistic thing with Kurt that I love is his constant progression in every aspect of music. Its not hard to hear that he still practice alot! His chops nowdays are breathtaking and listing to older recordings, both live and on record you hear and steady determined development. It inspires people to work hard their own mucical development on their own. Kurt is a living proof that hard work pays of. His gift or talent is only to be prayed for. Thanks for posting, best regards, Sandemose
OMG thank you so much for sharing. Although I love all of Kurt’s stuff this is my favorite. His sound, melodic ideas, ferocious eights and sixteens and his intensity…. It’s just mesmerizing
I never noticed how he's changing the place where he hits the string with his pick to change the dynamics. He's really figured out every aspect of sound. Thank you Kurt Rosenwinkel for bringing more genius into our world.
i dont know if the duality of 'on vs. off' applies to Kurt, he leaves his entire life out on the bandstand every single show, he plays with so much passion... what a blessing he is to music and what an amazing inspiration for guitarists and just musicians in general.
Holly smoke!! I love what he's getting out of that 335!! Especially like the chord improvisation part towards the end of his solo. Nice way to tame the fire.
To the original poster - did you realize the full greatness of this in the moment, or does listening back to it in the moment over and over deepen the appreciation even further?
I can't believe I read through that whole discussion in the comments... I don't feel much more enlightened now, but it was very entertaining. Thanks Moron and Ginger Balls!
The guitar was tuned in a much more complex manner than just a 1/2 step down if you didnt know. This is the tuning he used for most of the songs on The Next Step: Bb-G-Db-Ab-Bb-Eb (hell of a low E-string. But if you listen to the record, you can hear some of the basslines he plays with the chords are really low). His best record together with the Remedy if you ask me... Best, Sandemose
on the record he did this song with the guitar tuned down 1/2 a step to Eb but live he just plays it in standard thats all, he used the alternate tuning for 'a shifting design' but he plays that in standard live too.
I think he still use D´Addario .013-0.56. He went through all his gear, but it was long time ago and it has changed. He also talked about the reason why he changed tuning: he came to a point when he didnt know what to do. He just wanted to flip the keys and see what would come out of it. Esp. when composing he said that beneath a tuning there always is a song waiting to be found. He learned all the stuff he knew all over again all the scales, chords untill he got bored and changed back again :)
man seriously Kurt is the shit, I don´t understand why some people can´t see it. They must be really good, but all closed minded because he is setting the new aesthetic in jazz guitar, his style is the new thing, so common there are lots of good guitar players in the world but only a few strong enough to create trends...
Wow kurt is awesome, but hey check out that drummer he's right on, it's like kurt's best friend is there, listen carefully, what an incredible duo man wow!!
i can tell he's just as much a rock guy as he is a jazz guy.. its great! he has an eclectic sound for sure. i think both are incredible to listen to.. allan has such a unique approach, that has insipired many. his very pure legato thing is more snakey and sax-like. *just before the 4min mark in this jam with kurt he gets busts a couple of holdsworth worthy licks. i think someone mentioned a pat metheny/kurt similarity.. i could hear that. what do u mean by 'easier'..
This is just greatness. The drummer is the shit, Kurt pulls out some really nice licks, and I really dig Kurt's tone. Anyone know what amp he's playing though? Looks like a Deluxe Reverb, but I can't see too clearly on here.
@dorian411 Man to get a closer look check out his track called "Turns" or "Zhivago" those are two of my favorites of KR. But honestly theres a ton of cool stuff. Keep looking into this guy because he's a living genius in my book
I like when people think they know what proffesional musicians should work on. "Learn to use dynamics"...most stupid comment ever to travel through the air of cyberspace...
Since english is not my native language, I think Im excused for not writing/speaking 100% correctly. I guess thats stuff you have to reach for. I did get my point across so why complain? Your "advice" is based on one perticular clip. Check out the intro to "A life unfolds" from the Remedy album (Live at Village Vanguard) and come back and complain later. Man, Kurts tearing down the house in this solo, he freaking goin beserk, he doesnt take any prisoners in this clip. Including you...best, S
also i think allans playing is more modular.. even in the way he talks about it. even though most of his patterns he deals with are 'synthesized' or dealt with in his own way.. i think he deals with things in more of a modal coltrane fashion than in a pureist bebop way.. not to say kurt is purely anything.. but he references bebop in his playing in a more direct way than allan.. whereas i think allan's very singular approach is a result of such thinking rather than referencing it
@mzarab i agree dude. love his playing, but sometimes i wish he'd slow down frisell-style and let the audience digest the sheer beauty of his lines. but hes uncompromising. i guess thats a good thing. no telling what will happen as he continues to grow as a player. still a pretty young dude.
to my ears, it sounds a lot like the ruetz mod for the rat.. it's easy to find informations on this mod on google and really easy to do the mod too. you just to cut the right lead and you got that sound. then you have to practice a lot because the sound is indeed 90% from your finger :)
you are absolutely right my friend.i havent realize it yet!polytone or fender kurt has the same beautifull sound i believe.trauma whenever i played a rat pedal i didn't like it much.maybe kurt has kinda modified pedal or something..or do tricks with his sound tha we don't know
kurt definately is very much bop based. its funny though, i saw him give a lecture and he was saying that his influences starting out were like rush, deep purple, zeppelin, acdc, etc., and then he mentioned hearing spyro gyra for the first time and being blown away and acredited them with getting him into jazz. never woulda guessed. he seemed like an odd chap. anyway hes one of the greats and as far as comparing him to alan IMHO kurt is far easier and more satisfying listening. both are great.

That's crazy! I likewise feel so fortunate to have seen you at Village Vanguard with Kurt's quintet and a trio! Mind blowing
Man, that's awesome, going from watching him as a kid to then gig with him! One of my dreams right there.
Still loving this solo more than 10 years after it was uploaded
It’s hard to express just how good this is. If you play guitar you know. Pat Metheny must have freaked out when he saw it. What a gift.
fkn amazing.

This is what I call "transcend the music"!!!
The best!!!
Love! Brilliant musicianship!
i dont know if the duality of 'on vs. off' applies to Kurt, he leaves his entire life out on the bandstand every single show, he plays with so much passion... what a blessing he is to music and what an amazing inspiration for guitarists and just musicians in general.
Kurt is becoming more and more unpredictable. This solo takes off and I think he's already out of this planet.
love your playing Kurt!
C.G.T. Ukiah, CA
Kendrick Scott on the drums! Incredible!
is it really!?
YEESSSSSS!!! kurt is just amazing on this... but than again- he's always amazing :)
what a difference three years makes... his playing here and on The Remedy... totally different... always incredible!
Monumental improvisation
Holly smoke!! I love what he's getting out of that 335!! Especially like the chord improvisation part towards the end of his solo. Nice way to tame the fire.
Great knowledge in this solo transcriber!
Thank you for this! Kurt is really mashing up Zhivago in a terrific way. Maybe this is home ice advantage...but probably not. Cheers
GOD DAMN. That drummer is so on, I want to be there.
To the original poster - did you realize the full greatness of this in the moment, or does listening back to it in the moment over and over deepen the appreciation even further?
Absolute mastery of the instrument
That drummer is dope as hell
Wow...Fantastic as usual. Kurt has pulled out his old 335.
I was there! I hope he comes back to philly soon
I can't believe I read through that whole discussion in the comments... I don't feel much more enlightened now, but it was very entertaining. Thanks Moron and Ginger Balls!
pure genious!
... that's one small step for man, one giant leap for guitar-kind.
The name of this song is Zhivago
This sound so good that what i care, peoples!!!!!!!!!!
@jonathanleemusic Kurt, Aaron Parks (piano), Ben Street (bass) and Kendrick Scott (drums) .
@@LasseSchjerning this was not Ben street, was Joe Martin!
@@AlexanderClaffyMusic oh, thanks for clearing that up, claffy - my mistake! i can see joe in the end also!
I love it
Hope to see you soon like.
Did you cover
On Red Gardenien Street?
*Live
anybody notice how he keeps moving his right hand from near the bridge to near the neck and back?
IsaacDarcheMusic wow, didnt notice. To get a different tone you think?
I kept noticing that haha. I was wondering if it's on purpose? Get a softer tone? He talks about wanting to have a less "picky" tone in other videos
You can hear difference in tone between both
Kurt, another one of Bret Willmott's outstanding students.

Beautiful stuff. Though in this clip he is in standard tuning
he's a great guitarist and composer.
awesome!!!!!

damn,kurt is the man,
I hope people understand just how difficult that melody is. I've been trying to play this for ages
Kurt being kurt :)
actually i saw him at a clinic in new orleans on dec 5th and he said it was a new axe (new to him that is...it is obviously a vintage 335)

Bb on the 6th string?? what gauge of strings is he using.. interesting tuning. i wonder what the advantage of using that tuning is.
Une autre trouvaille russe 😮😎👍

who the hell disliked this video.....??
I'm wondering what would come out if Ben (Monder) and Kurt would start a duo
Kurt Rosenwinkel frowns upon you both, spongemund and persistent guy.

This whole solo was pretty undynamic though. Maybe you have garbage ears?
@@davidfaustino4476 you must be right. Never thought of that.

Does anyone know the name of the tune?
Zhivago
nice!
exactly.
Septuplet swing at the end?
Oh my god dude
Holy shit.
LOL...
@MilesThePhunk John McLaughlin is (was?) the Coltrane of guitar! This guy is more like.. Chris Potter maybe?
NJlo It's more accurate to say Pat Martino is the Coltrane of Guitar.
Sean Rosati Allan Holdsworth is the Coltrane of guitar
Angelo, you nailed it, having seen Chris Potter recently and played some of his charts & completely agree.
aw that's all kid stuff....thing is, he is the only kid that can do it....wow.
how is the drummer? any guesses?
