  • And.... we're back!! My unpopular opinions about Gilmore Girls... was Jess really a good romantic interest? Did Rory get better as the show went on? And, surprisingly, why Lorelai was a better mother than you realised.

my unpopular opinion: Luke was super well off and needs to be acknowledged as such. Luke was a successful businessman who spent 100K on a whim to spite Taylor, and gave Lorelai a business loan (and offered a personal loan to help with the termites), but he's "working class" and was looked down on by the Gilmores (including Lorelai and Rory to an extent) because he wears flannel? I guess? There is a lot that could have been unpacked re cultural vs financial aspects and signifiers of class that would be amazing to explore with Luke but that is reduced to that he drives a beat up truck and how he dresses.

@@sw-uj2oh His business was inherited from his dad - not to diminish changing a hardware store into a diner. At the same time, he inherited a building and a business and whatever capital came from that. Luke literally has inherited wealth. Which again, is interesting as an exploration of class outside WASP signifiers, or would if it was acknowledged and explored in the show. Point is, he didn't exactly pull himself up.

Richard wasn't just as bad as Emily, he was worse. Emily at least was a respectful wife and partner. He treated her awfully. And it seemed like Emily wanted a relationship with Rory and Lorelai despite their differences. Richard seemed completely uninterested in Rory until he found out that she was smart and bookish. And what he did to Jason was terrible. He's a really interesting character, but far from a good person.

Absolutely true!! I feel like Emily was more in touch with her flaws and more like "what you see is what you get", meanwhile Richard operated from the shadows. He is seen as more kind because he doesn't raise his voice as much as Emily, he's more of a diplomat than her, but he's very manipulative and nasty. I hated what he did to Jason 😭

something that annoyed me about luke was that i never felt like the show properly addressed the fact that right after he told lorelai she needed to not be lying to him about christopher.... he then went and lied to her about finding out he had a kid. like ik he apologised. but i fully expected lorelai to at one point be like "you were just saying we shouldnt be lying/hiding things from each other!" and she never did. like ik the show acknowledges it wasnt good for him to lie, but it's just a pet peeve of mine that no one was like bro yall just had a conversation about honesty.
plus the show never addresses his anger issues. at most they're laughed at, at the least they're just ignored and we move on with our day. like....

My unpopular opinions: Rory and Lorelai are extremely misogynist. They hate women who are feminine or into traditionally feminine things. Sure they themselves are somewhat feminine but, they feel almost threaten by other women who seem more feminine than them. For example Lindsay was a housewife and that triggered Rory soo much it was unbelievable. She also never associate with anyone particular that's girly infact she's friends with Paris and Lane who aren't the most girliest of girls and have traditionally male attributes.

    • @cosmok-1367
      @cosmok-1367 6 месяцев назад +15

Honestly, looking back, Gilmore girls itself seemed misogynistic and it only increases as the seasons went on. I think part of the reason for this was because I noticed how the show plays on the troupe of “cool girl” and “not like other girls” where a common theme of those two is how that particular female lead will often demonize the more feminine women around them. Because they feel threatened by those feminine girls. Obviously I didn’t realize this on first watch, but after many rewatched and learning about those troupes, it checks all the boxes.
I know Serena did a video about the cool girl topic of Gilmore girls, but I really hope she does one that talks about the hidden misogyny in the show, not from the guys but from the women as well. If not, I was thinking of making a video taking about that myself.

I recently saw the episodes where Rory meets Bobby, Logan's super attractive business partner and although I understand she felt surprise that Bobby wasn't a man (judging by the name lol, or because Logan never mentioned it to her), she immediately feels threatened by her and accuses her (not to her face) for being sarcastic and bad to her when in fact she was nothing but lovely. God that annoyed me so much and not to mention how she body shamed that ballerina😮 I know this was in the 2000s and it was more "acceptable" to make comments about someone's body but even for that era, it was horrible and so uncalled for.. critique her for her skills but not her body 😭 that was so gross, I cannot

I agree with you somewhat on Paris (full disclosure, my favorite character on the show) but I think one reason why so many people liked her so much was that she was set up as if she was going to have a redemption arc (her own Zuko arc if you will). She was set up as this intelligent and fierce but also deeply insecure and abused girl who was in need of finding her own community and learn to use her strengths for good. And I liked what she brought out in Rory, the one actually special thing in Rory in those first two seasons was how she was able to show compassion to this girl who was downright mean to her, how she seemed to see past Paris’ bad behavior. But then season 4 rolls around and Paris is now more or less a butt monkey and comic relief, her flaws are apparently just how she is, she’s “wacky” and comically aggressive etc. And Rory seems to simply tolerate her while looking down her nose at her even though she also keeps going back to her friendship for some reason. I feel like the show was just so afraid of giving any woman a serious, relatable arc that might make them more liked than the two main characters that they completely derailed Paris (which is also what happened to Lane imo).

But it also felt to me that he threw the ball in her court.. the way he looks at her when they meet, especially in that stupid cabaret that Colin buys (or was it Finn?) , he gazes at her so lovingly as to say "just say the word and I am yours, I'll dump everything for you" . But she never says anything lol. They're both wrong for cheating but to me it just feels like he wanted her more than she wanted him so he was willing to accept the relationship on these terms (although yes he was so wrong for cheating on his fiancée)

My unpopular opinion is that ASP & Co. write inconsistent characters to suit their whims if a certain plot thread catches their attention. They have a reputation for sticking to an idea because it was the first idea regardless of how it’s received, but the show is full of characters (outside the core four of the Gilmores) who are modified to make another plot make sense. Dean was smarter in seasons 1-2, then gets dumbed down for Jess. Luke was smarter in the first season and spouts a lot of leftist, anti-capitalist ideas until the writers needed him to be more traditionalist and conservative as a contrast to raising his rebellious delinquent nephew. Marty was the unrequited awkward college friend-crush who turned into whatever tf that was in season 7. Notice it happens mostly to the men?
Kirk was an unyielding but quirky working man, and he gets flanderized season 3 onwards as Weird Cat Guy Who Lives With His Mom (and at that point becomes insufferable to me.)

I think my most unpopular opinion which I haven't seen mentioned yet is how the show sometimes uses violence or upsetting situations for the purpose of comedy. I think the show does that a lot and I struggle to see the humor in it. For example, Mrs. Kim's strictness is sometimes played for comedy but it's just sad to watch.

Oh yeah I absolutely felt that throughout the show as well. They did this with so many different characters and situations… and I am consistently baffled seeing how little that’s talked about. Mrs Kim was blatantly emotionally and jus psychologically abusive and I jus hated how they made lane look like a bad person for not wanting a relationship with her at times or not caring if she came to the wedding/babyshower (I don’t remember which one it was). I actually was hoping that there’d come a point in the show where they’d show case lane putting herself first and finally cutting off her highly toxic mother. But no, in the end, they framed lane to look dramatic for not wanting Mrs Kim in her and her kids lives and even Lorelei tried to convince lane and invalidate lanes feelings just because Lorelei wouldn’t have wanted Rory to do that to her. She was projecting and even though lanes relationship with her mother was completely different from hers and Rory’s, she couldn’t separate herself from it. Which in fact, we can even go as far to say that it is quite hypocritical that Lorelei isn’t understanding to lanes feeling in this circumstance since she cut off her own mother, Emily for the better part of 16 years and only got pulled back into a relationship with Emily for money… and I would say that Mrs Kim was just as emotionally abusive as Emily… if not, more!!!

The cherry on top is Lane’s mom. Maybe her open mindness to him was catalyzed by Dave, but loved how much she tried making sure Zach can provide for Lane with the band. She also was very supportive of them.

My unpopular opinion is Chris is trash. He made his involvement in his daughter’s life contingent on whether Lorelei would be romantically involved with him, and that really messed her up. He not only gets Lorelei pregnant accidentally (which okay he was 16) but repeated the same mistake with Sherrie when their relationship was far from settled. Has the man never heard of condoms? Unlike Logan he never really evolved into his own professional path and lied about his business failures. And he manipulates Lorelei when she goes to him as a friend. I think people give Chris a pass for the same reasons they give Richard a pass.
The actor is charismatic and he and Lauren Graham have a ton of chemistry and are fun to watch. But he’s got no character and I think really damaged Rory’s ability to relate to men. It’s even mentioned when she freaks out when Dean first says he loves her, and the Jess spiral starts after Chris and Lorelei sleep together while he’s still with Sherrie. Trash, trash, trash.

When Rory told him to back off Lorelai because he has a tendency to derail her happiness (one of few moments where Rory’s kinda out of line but idc, I loved it and Chris had it coming) and he has the nerve to say “I knew her first” like 🤢 he feels resentment toward his own child for coming between him and Lorelai, how gross.

@@BlackXSunlight And early in season 3 when she is mad that he left them to be with Sherrie, and Chris breaks in on Friday night dinner to accuse Lorelei of turning Rory against him is classic Chris, selfish, entitled, rude, assuming that Rory has no opinion of her own because he fundamentally doesn’t know her at all. Or maybe getting drunk at Emily’s wedding and throwing a tantrum because his college aged daughter is kissing Logan. Or the way Rory is left alone with his girlfriend while Gigi is in labor (and Lorelei therefore has to be there to help). Trash, trash, trash, whiny entitled trash.
People call out Luke for having a bad temper but even after Chris has won and he and Lorelei are married and he has no reason whatsoever to be in competition with Luke he gets into a random fist fight with Luke in the square and WHY? He implodes his marriage in less than six months because he’s totally threatened by Luke and the townies don’t like him. But Luke does nothing to him and the townies are right. After all, who was at Rory’s high school graduation and was around making cakes for her birthday and moved her into her dorm at Yale? It wasn’t her father, it was Luke. And you don’t have to like Luke and Lorelei together or in fact like Luke at all to see he has more substance in his pinkie than Chris has in his whole body. Trash, trash, whiny trash.
And it’s not even because Chris is rich. Logan is rich and is quite different aside from a superficial physical resemblance. Logan slept around and partied but he apparently understands contraception and was straightforward instead of manipulative.

@@angeliprimlani9389 YES on all of this! Chris accusing Lorelai of turning Rory against him was actually so triggering the first time I watched that scene back in the day, heard similar accusations when I was around Rory's age as if I wasn't an autonomous thinking person. If I was capable of forming my own thoughts in an AP test essay at the time, I was just as capable of examining an adult's behavior and determining "Ah, you're an asshole" all on my own!

    • @angeliprimlani9389
      @angeliprimlani9389 6 месяцев назад +6

I actually think he has a pattern of getting sexually involved with Lorelei when she’s emotionally down. Not that she doesn’t have that problem right there with him, but at more than one point she goes to him after a bad time and they end up sleeping together. He is her Achilles heel. A different old boyfriend who is now a friend might have said hey Lore you just broke up with Luke maybe let’s not have drunken sex until you get into a better headspace.
He also collaborates with Emily to actively break Lorelei and Luke up … and again you don’t have to like Luke to see this is TRASH BEHAVIOR. It’s not romantic, it’s openly manipulative.

I've only watched 2 seasons but I've been always bothered by the character of Richard. When he wasn't a perpetrator, he would just allow all the abuse around him happen, be it Emily's abuse of Lorelai or his mother's actions towards Emily. They really hit the mark with the portrayal of a condescending, entitled bystander of a father, who stays out of the "catfights".

A lot of these might be unpopular, but your takes are more reasonable and rational (and accurate) than a lot of the prevailing opinions tbh.
    1) The shyness and lack of a strong personality works in her favor because she is easily *idealized*. One part smart pretty girl, one part 2000's cool girl personality, one part needs to "brought out of her shell" -- honestly I'd argue it's more shocking there weren't 10 times more guys after her. (Ironically, as a high school sophomore when the show premiered I thought she was incredibly mid. lol)
    2) Totally agree that late season Rory is way more interesting. This shouldn't be up for debate.
    10) I think people like Dave because it's Adam Brody/Seth Cohen. End of story.
    19) I've come to find most of the side characters more charming than annoying over time, but you aren't wrong. They are such caricatures of people most of the time ... I get it.

@@angeliprimlani9389 oh yes, the link between her mood and food is so interesting, and when she's not in the mood for coffee is when we know she's really going through it! Also the quality of the coffee she drinks is often used as a narrative device to convey conflict or incompatibility, like how bad the coffee was at the Chilton PTA meeting, or how she can't find "a good cup of coffee" whenever she's isolated and has no one backing her up (usually if she's in conflict with Luke at the same time that her parents are tripping her up about something). I love how consistent this is.

About the food thing: We rarely see people eat much in movies/shows in general. The thing with Lorelai and Rory is more of the "cool girl eats alot but is still skinny and beautiful" trope, bc no matter how much we see them eat, the seed is planted, the talk about how much/what they eat and how skinny/good looking they are despite of it is the issue. If there’s ever an issue or problem she doesn’t bother to solve it herself or better yet have her newly husband solve it instead she projects everything on Luke. He is her big brother, not her personal maid. I feel like she’s extremely selfish and only shows interest in her brothers life when it benefits her. I agree that I don’t think Lorelai is spoiled. I don’t think she’s ungrateful. Those who say so have probably had secure parents who fulfilled them emotionally and they’re likely looking at financial benefits in a superficial way. She was neglected emotionally and her rebellious aspects are often dramatized by her purposely, you can tell she’s in survival mode desperately fighting for the right to be herself. I don't understand why some characters get overhyped (Paris, Jess, Logan, even Lane) while others get so demonized (Rory, Lorelei, April) when all of them have positive and negative traits and make mistakes. Lorelei is a great mother. Underneath all that tomfoolery she's very serious, dependable, considerate and take charge kind of person. I feel bad for Paris because of her family, but she's an obnoxious, rude, entitled bully. And Rory... she gets the most hate of all. For not being perfect. I mean, who is?

He always feels like a hypocrite in my opinion.

    • @cosmok-1367
      @cosmok-1367 5 месяцев назад +1

I felt the same way during my rewatch. He wasn't terrible in the first season or two, but around season three he really gets super entitled. I think it's because he's made to seem like this town elder so that's why he should be respected, but really he just seems like a nosy business man who feels insecure when threatened by competition or when things don't go his way.
And there are many episodes where I hated how he handled certain plots. The Dragonfly inn being one of them because... it makes no sense why Taylor would be against wanting the Inn to be restored. Really think about it, Stars Hollow prides itself for being a tourist attraction: A small town in the 2000's, a strong community with many attractions and stores and a welcoming attitude. But people only stay in Stars Hollow because they stayed in the Independence Inn. After all, you need at least a bed and breakfast for people to stay overnight, because the longer they stay, the more they might enjoy themselves and increase popularity.
But near the end of Season 3, the Independence Inn burns down, and we're told the owner sold the place. We don't know what happened, but based on the fact they never refer back to the Inn, we can assume it's no longer operational or at least not a place for people to stay during an overnight trip. So, without an Inn, that would mean people couldn't stay in Stars Hollow longer cause they have no place to go, thus decreasing the amount of tourist and revenue. Which in turn would hurt the popularity and reputation of the town.
If Taylor was as concerned for Stars Hollow as he says he is, he would have realized this and wanted to push the reconstruction of the Inn as soon as possible. But instead, he blackmails Lorelai to give her the permits because... he wants her to convince Luke to let him use the street for him to... park an ice cream truck near the diner for his business...? In the great words of David Rose: That is the stupidest fucking thing I have ever heard of. (Okay yeah, Taylor and Luke don't see eye to eye, especially if it involved his soda shop, but he still shouldn't have risked the town's rep just for his own business!) Honestly, Taylor doesn't care about the town's businesses unless they are businesses he owns! (the grocery store and soda shop) And even after the Dragonfly Inn is running, he still finds ways to hurt the Inn and ruin their reputation. (Snowing them in with the plows during the first snow, changing the street name to something disgusting like boils.) And again, why is he giving the Inn a hard time, when he needs a bed and breakfast to help increase the number of tourist!
I also really hated how no one called Taylor out for his petty actions or even threatened him! Yeah, he does get dismissed by the towns people and his family now and again, but they don't really hold him accountable for the damages he causes. Honestly, I'm surprised Luke didn't sue Taylor installing that traffic camera near his diner, which caused Kirk to crash into the building. Taylor could have been liable for property damages and human endangerment. If Taylor had suffered consequences to his actions, then I wouldn't have minded him as much because at least there'd be some justice. But yeah, I wished they had written Taylor off. I don't think any of the fans really liked him, and I'm sure if he was no longer showing up in the episodes, no one would have cared or noticed. (And we do not talk about his involvement in the Revival! Especially how he ruined Abba for me! Screw you Taylor!)

In a flashback of how Lorelei ended up pregnant and the families finding out, Strob, Christopher's father, suggests that Lorelei could get rid of the baby. I share a lot of the same opinions about the show. I actually did not like how The Revival undid so much of what the show developed simply because the original showrunners wanted to tell their version of what they thought should have happened during the later seasons when they were no longer working on the show. Especially Rory's pregnancy at the end - by that point, she is like 30, so that is not even that big of a deal (it would have seemed more like a full circle moment if she became pregnant while she was in school or college).

Disclaimer: I’ve not seen the show
1: agree! Not to be mean to Alexis but she’s quite average looking (which I actually think is a good thing and that more shows should have average looking people). Also as an introvert myself, you bring up great points that she is very shy/stays in a lot which shouldn’t afford her as many opportunities to meet as many guys as she does in the show.
2: agree. As a general rule, I think tv/movie characters are more interesting the more flaws they have.
3: disagree. While Jess seems like a rebel teenager and he definitely has his flaws, I do think he genuinely cared for Rory which in itself makes him a good option for her in my opinion.
4: agree. I don’t know much about this couple but considering they had a baby together and he shows up later in the series, it would have been interesting to see them in a relationship from the get go.
5: AGREE. Besides what you said, I think it’s just WEIRD Lorelai is very chummy with people much younger than her *cough* Dean *cough*!
6: agree. The man seemed to be more overprotective of Rory than he was of Jess who was supposed to be his NEPHEW!! As for what you are talking about in the video, Luke just seems like a stereotypical guy with the emotional range of a teaspoon.
7: agree. Rory’s pregnancy seemed to come out of nowhere like they needed her to become pregnant like her mother. Like you said, they should have had her be raising a family with Logan or off working on a newspaper somewhere. We already got the “teen/young single mom” trope with Lorelai.
8: agree, although I don’t really care either way.
9: agree and overall I think she isn’t good in any of her movie/tv roles that I have seen (which consist of Tuck Everlasting & clips of this show).
10: disagree. Dave really went to great lengths to be with Lane, which is saying someing for a teenage boy. That being said, I agree he is not “whole video dedicated to him” good but that doesn’t make him a non interesting character.
    11: I have no opinion
    12: I have no opinion
13: DISAGREE!. Yes these boys can be very immature but, they grow to like and respect Rory as a close friend which I find very admirable considering they were Logan’s friends first.
14: AGREE! Logan supports Rory tremendously and seems like great potential “husband material”. He also seems to be a good friend outside of simply being Rory’s boyfriend.
15: agree. Dean seems to be a person of average intelligence that isn’t very book smart (or rather INTERESTED in being book smart) but that doesn’t mean he is stupid. His anger and possessive nature is what turns me off of him not his supposed lack of intelligence.
16: agree with everything you said.
    17: I have no opinion
18: agree. From what I have seen Dean was sweet until he started to feel insecure following the “I love you” scene and Jess’s arrival into town.
    19: I have no opinion
20: disagree. I think he was a good enemies to lovers character, especially after Rory and he shared their first kiss.
    21: I have no opinion
    *Bonus*
22: I think Rory and Logan should have never reconnected after she rejected his proposal.

    1. its simple actually. first, she's very pretty (not in modern 'bratz' type of pretty? but more classical) and second, she's smart. so Dean saw her as a cool smart girl who's way out his league; Tristan saw her as a challenge because she was the only girl who didn't fall for him; for marty she was a pretty girl who acknowledge him and was nice to hum; and for logan she was an ideal partner because she was smart, cute and wasn't spoiled like all other girls in his circle. so every guy saw something special in her that was interesting exactly for him.
    2. partially agree. 3. fully agree.
    4. it was addressed fully in 7th season. 7th season was literally a closure for Lorelai and Chris. they literally got married and lived as a married couple and it it showed how incompatible they were. Like, we're as viewers were literally told: see? this would never work. it was that kind of a dream that's better to stay unfulfilled because in reality it sucks.
5 i think it's not unpopular, lots of fans think that. also, she clearly has ADHD
    6. Luke wasn't supposed to be a hunk. he's an ordinary man from a working class who hates everything around him on words but secretly very soft :) his rants and his inability to express his feelings are something that's acknowledged along the series. i can't believe you think being a man of actions is annoying 😂😂 no wonder you prefer Chris, he's all about words and no actions
    7. fully agree, it's just lazy writing
    8. you really love drama , dont you🤣🤣Luke is stable and thoughtful, Lorelai's impulse and talkative. they're literally perfect for each other
    9. no. her monotone acting fits perfectly into her character
    10. just no😂😂
    11. ok i just didn't get this, so i'll skip :) that one's super specific
    12. agree. i think people love her because of contrast with Rory. Rory regressed throughout the series, and Paris leveled up. fans needed someone to root for, and since Rory wasnt' good enough for him anymore, they decided to love Paris :)
    13. that was quick :)
    14. not agree. yes he was trying to be better, but it was rory who pushed hi. if it wasn't for her, he would keep mooching off his father (remember, he didn't even want to write something for the paper because he knew nobody could kick him out. and he treated marty like crap because marty was 'lower class')
    15, 16, 17, 18 and 19. completely agree
    20. partially agree. yes he was a jerk but it's interesting that you condemn him but defend Logan because it's basically the same situation. Tristan was a child of rich abusive parents and his school was the only thing where he was something. with proper time, i think, we would see his character growth, he just wasn't given enough time.
    21 and 22. completely agree

Besides your overlook of Rory's pretty privilege, I'd say these were all spot on. Dean wasn't that bad; reminds me a lot of high school love. Logan had growth. I would have liked to see more of Jess once he worked on himself more, but they used his character well in the later appearances. Richard needs more hate, but I'd say less than Emily. Lorelai was annoying in her rants. The townspeople were often annoying, and I really DGAF about Kirk. Luke and Lorelai are not a great couple, and they still hadn't worked out many of their communication kinks in the revival. If Christopher could get his shit together and not be so spineless, he might have had her. Alexis Bledel is not a good actress; I still don't understand why people like her in the Handmaid's Tale. She's so monotone, but like a more charming form than Kristen Stewart. I think if they focused more on the main characters rather than the town plots/sideshows, they could have had better stories and character development. It often felt like no one really changed. The best development in the show was the one Emily went through after Richard died. Completely believable, and I wish we could have seen something similar for the other Gilmore girls.

I think a lot of people judge Dean harshly to justify their personal attractions to bad boy Jess. Dean was a little short tempered but a lot of that is stemmed from FEAR as well as lack of maturity. Everyone forgets they were in highschool. He only really starts to become a problem when he openly has his girlfriend entertain and enjoy the affections from another man and dismiss his concerns. Again, rightfully so. I’m glad you added that. Although I do enjoy Lorelai as a person I do agree she was overbearing to watch. It feels like she puts on shows and performances for other people to purposely stand out/be quirky and cute. But it doesn’t feel authentic or genuine. One of the biggest ways it’s displayed is when she gets with Christopher. Sooki is in the kitchen addressing her concerns for Lorelai as he has never been around consistently but he will still be around if there’s another split up. Lorelai is very serious and defending herself and then Christopher calls. As she’s on the phone with him she’s talking fast and throwing out her little kid jokes but her demeanor did not change from the conversation that was cut short with sooki and it really felt like we were seeing the scared child in her. The authentic Lorelai. I disliked Tristan as well, I felt like he was a random, meaningless character and he came off as a pick me boy. I’m so damaged. I’m so neglected. It was very attention seeking and he came off desperate, I don’t think he wanted to be with Rory I think he wanted her to fix him and do the hard work for him

Maybe it was a wrong time/wrong place situation with them because I like seeing them together when they’re older (as friends) and cheer for him when he convinces her to go back to Yale, but I didn’t like Dean from the moment he broke up with Rory for not saying I love you back. I get he’s a teenager and all, but to make his character redeeming at that point to me they should have at least met in the middle instead of Rory always tiptoeing around him and his feelings after that. After that yes they do dumb him down, but he dumped her in season 1 so I never felt he was the perfect first boyfriend everyone claimed he was

while I understand your reasoning for #10, Lane was based heavily on ASP’s best friend Helen Pai (Lane’s band “Hep Alien” is named after her) and her IRL husband’s name is Dave Rygalski. So Lane and Dave probably would’ve been end game. maybe not without flaws, as Sookie and Jackson are overall a healthy couple but the vasectomy storyline obviously isn’t a good part, but they most likely would’ve wound up together long term

13:45 I liked Logan, but it bothered me how frequently he would talk his way out of taking accountability for his actions. He approached conflict like a game he could win instead of with empathy a lot of times, which felt icky.

I think you`re just too young to really get it :). And too much into drama tv. Luke and Lorelei didn`t have much in common but they loved each other. Instead of the dumb and dangerous enemies to lovers trope, they`re best friends almost family.

Taylor was super annoying and I wish they kept him off the show or minimalized his role. He was never bad enough to actually be an antagonist and that his action actually had an impact on the story or the girls, but he was way too big of an ass and featured too heavily for someone just meant to be a town weirdo/grump. He‘s extensively unpleasant without any impact and since the show is mainly comfort watching, he sticks out waaaaay to much.
Also agree with Paris, I was so confused when she and Rory became friends. I actually would’ve preferred Paris to have her own show! But she and Rory never made sense to me, much in the way of the typical YA main couple were the only shared traits need to be „they’re main characters“ for them to get together, Paris and Rorys friendship felt very „written“ to me and not organic. You can almost hear the writers going „Well, Rory needs a friend and Lane is staying in Stars Hollow, so that‘s who we have!“

    I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING!
Maybe only the more intelligent people are able to see these things.... But anyways:
    Luke sucks
    Paris sucks
Lorelay I understand where she's coming from but annoying
    Rory and Jess together suck
    Lorelay and Luke suck 😂😂
    Suki sucks as a chef
    Jackson sucks
    Lorelay mother sucks
    Lorelay father sucks 😂😂
    Logan and Rory, thumbs up
    Lorelay and Chris thumbs up
Dean actally not so bad up to a certain point
Also Lane... Someone should have called social services and took her away from her mother instead of playing the whole thing out as a funny joke.

I don't like Logan only due to one reason that it was implied he was a Playboy and later on "changed for the better" because of Rory which kind of says that Rory changed him or put him on the right path by committing again placing the responsibility of "changing a man" on a woman. Or atleast show me why he changed cuz of Rory, I can't believe he changed for her or don't like the implication that she changed him. I feel Logan's character lacked alot of depth and i wasn't great fan of the actor who played him as well. His acting seemed out of place for me. Wish they wrote him better for us to relate to. A rich boy with little control over life decisions should've been easy for us to be sympathetic about but I didn't feel that for him. However i liked the scenes where he called out Rory for being rich but acting otherwise.

I don’t think I have an unpopular opinion, so I will say that Jess was better only after being kicked out from school, he was the “bad boy” that teenage Rory wanted to fix, and I think if they had met later in life, when he had his life a bit more figured out, they would’ve worked better (which is what the revival hints at). And while I’m not Team Logan, I see why they’re the most compatible and the longest relationship Rory had.

I completely agree with most of these! Jess was not the right fit early on, Dean was a great boyfriend, loved Logan, Emily wasn't a good mother, Jackson is incredibly annoying, I also thought Michelle was annoying and didn't change ever -- I do love Kirk though and I do like Lorelai and Luke's relationship. On another note, in the beginning I thought Richard's character was extremely cold but started liking him more and more as the show progressed, although he does endorse Emily's behavior and what he did to Jason was a horrible move. Sometimes, throughout the show, to change the plot they change a character, like they did with Dean, and it's confusing as all the characters perception changes but not the viewers perception- like having a cognitive dissonance from what they are saying/portraying vs what we believe.
I agree that Rory's pregnancy was bad, in "A year in a life" as a millennial I could identify with her, because I also grew up with such hopes that adulthood didn't fulfil. I felt a mix of empathy, concern, and perhaps even frustration or sadness, because despite all the opportunities she had to become a successful journalist and more importantly to be happy with her life, she ends up in the same spiral, as if things were meant to be repeated, and that is not the idea I'd hoped to get from the show.
Thank you for the unpopular opinions!

The most unpopular opinion was one you said offhand and was in your first point, you said Dean was a good boyfriend who "showed up for her." As I've rewatched, I do agree with a lot of these hot takes. Rory stills gets a lot of hate, even more now, but I have felt more sympathetic because of that relatability. Shame that the revival ended her arc the way that it did because scenes like her interview bombing was honestly a pretty bold move for the protagonist of a show like this.
I personally never liked Logan. He's grown on me though, but I still didn't care enough for him because he didn't feel as much of a real character to me. His potentially worse tendencies, and those of the Life and Death brigade crew in general, shaved off as it progressed. I think them being much more textual classist assholes that get to grow from some comeuppance would have made me a Logan fan.

My very unpopular opinion obviously is that Jess could have been the right guy for Rory if they had met later, once Jess would have overcome his father abandonment issue. In the revival we have a hint of what could have been once they are both in their thirties. Jess actually is the only one who doesn’t seem to be mentally challenged in the revival 😂.
I am sorry that I don’t really like Logan, especially after the revival, he obviously is a cheater. And Rory is not better.
I really like Lorelei. All her silliness, as you said, is often hiding something much deeper. I totally understand her because I know what it is to have an Emily as a mother. This series is so well written because the relationship between Lorelei and Emily is so realistic, it’s unbelievable. I cannot say for the rest as I never lived in a Stars Hollows fantasy. Wish I had, it would have been much more fun. I would have attended the town meetings and participated to the many festivals. I would have loved to eat all my meals at Luke’s Dinners, I’m just not sure if I would have had such a budget to spend!
Just one last thing: I agree with you, Lorelei is a good mother and she knows how to be strict with Rory when necessary.

Unpopular opinion: Christopher took advantage of Lorelai when he slept with her after her breakup with Luke. Hear me out. While it happened off screen and we aren't shown their interaction , it still feels weird that he'd do this, even if she told him it was over between her and Luke. I would personally not do this with someone who just broke up with their long term fiancée, because I'd think they're still vulnerable, still not over the breakup, in spite of what they would say! (This assuming that Lorelai even told him she and Luke were over cause we can't know, but assuming she did, he must have known it was fresh).
To me, it just feels like he just wanted to be with her, and when the first opportunity came around, be it as it was, he quickly took advantage of it.
Not saying Lorelai isn't mature enough to make her own decisions, of course, she is! But still, to me, it felt so wrong how Christopher accepted it.
But we can never know how it went down since it all happened off-screen.. still, it will always bug me 😤🙄😂
Another upopular opinion: Jason really wasn't that bad for her. He could keep up with her, he was considerate, he was also starting a business so he understood everything that comes with these responsibilities, he made sure she was always comfortable and he communicated openly and honestly with her (when he told her funerals creep him out because he lost so many family members as a child, a fact that is quite disregarded and brushed off somehow, but i think it affected him a great deal). I rrally liked the 2 of them together and I think they just used the plot of him sueing Richard to break them up and make way for Luke. But he was in the right to sue Richard, as Serena said in this video, Richard isnt a nice businesaman at all.
