Been waiting on this one since I saw that cover. You echo so much of what I heard from the families of children with disabilities that I worked with ages ago - All of them, in some way, told me that you just have to keep going. You may hate it, and it may suck...but you have to keep going. AND I love what you said about making plans....I read something somewhere about how we humans work so hard on all our detailed plans and life just laughs at us and does what it wants anyway! HA so true!
Thanks Pax! Life is all about readjusting I think. We can plan all we want but things just happen. Take it all day by day. 💚💚💚💚
I've been curious about this book so it's great to hear your thoughts on it. Definitely sounds like an impactful read. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Alex!
I just received my copy of this book in the mail!
I’ll be so curious what you think of it! It certainly has an impact on me.
I just started reading it this morning.
The Fifth Child takes down another victim. Nobody comes away from this book unshaken. I’ve just been watching Lessings interview about how she got her inspiration for this novel - and she talked about the mix between the reports of the discovery of the Floresiensis people in Indonesia, the classic folk story of the Little People people stealing a human baby and replacing it with one of their own and then reading a letter in an advice column in a woman’s magazine. I honestly don’t know if any other writer whose mind works the same way as hers did. I’m about to start “The wind blows away our words” - about her visit to Afghanistan in 1986. She was an absolute visionary. So sorely missed - God knows what she would have made of what’s happened in the last few years. But I doubt she’d be shocked. And yes - please read Ben in the World - the two books should be sold together IMO.
Haha happy to be another victim 😆 Thanks so much for your comments about her inspiration for the book. That’s super interesting. I will absolutely check out Ben in the World. I’m very curious about it.
I waited to watch this until after reading the book. The book was definitely unique, it was recommended to me with The Other and The Bad Seed so long ago, so I was expecting more creepy kid vibes. It definitely felt more family drama than horror, but I can definitely see how you would have been triggered. I have so many thoughts and I want to go back and annotate. I'm definitely going to look into the part 2. Thanks for the discussion!
Yea definitely a unique story. I liked The Other but haven’t read Bad Seed, will have to check that one out.
My son is autistic but I could never have given him up. I definitely felt that something i had done caused it. I would find this story very hard.😊
It’s a tough one but something about it just really resonated with me. Big hugs!
This is great book chat! Thanks so much for talking about your own experience ❤
Thanks Katrina! 💜💜
