BIG WAVE SURFING IN SAN DIEGO

- BIG WAVE SURFING IN SAN DIEGO. This winter San Diego experienced the biggest swell in 15 years on January 6, 2023. This video is a tribute to the historic surf that hit the coast of California, specifically San Diego during this run of swell.
While XL surf is rare in San Diego, it's a special reminder that San Diego has beaches that can hold XL surf. There are only a handful of waves in the world that can hold the magnitude of an XL swell and Black's Beach and La Jolla cove are two of those arenas!
This video also serves as the San Diego Waves of the Winter 2022-2023 highlight reel. The majority of clips in this edit are from this past winter season with a few selects from past winters.
We'd like to give a special thank you to all the surfers and filmers that make these videos possible. We have the utmost respect for surfers pushing the limits in our videos and surf filmmakers that are part of SoCal Surfer.

Looks GREAT! When I was living in SD back in '87-89 I didn't remember waves this Big- enjoy while you can!
It takes a LOT of heart to paddle into one of those behemoths!
Glad I paddled out there, this was a once in a decade swell
When was this? March 23, or awhile back
@@cliffboule8395 This was in January, the 6th to about the 9th or 10th there was a huge swell
@@b4ssfunk3dThanks. Was confused with the repost; there was a very large wind swell in LA, thought it had clean up down there.
I never saw u out there bro
@@suicidaltendencies99dude, we talked for like an hour in the line-up😂
Great video. Awesome tube ride shots
I can only remember a handful of times in recent decades when it’s been this big. Some of the beach breaks are really difficult to paddle out to, but killer to see folks charging. Used to love surfing Lucadia @ Beacons during big swells. Some of these sets were BIG! Great channel man.
My favorite was Neptune’s by there.
Da boys was charging! Great waves, and skill.
That last set wave was wicked!
I bought my first board, an 8 ft.Yater in 1969...I was a regular at Tourmaline from 1994 to 2018. The best year was '98 when we had a El Nino. Big waves all winter and warm water until Dec. Nothing like getting caught inside when a mac-wave breaks on your head. A lot of great memories. I miss it.
Great raw footage. Looks awesome
Nice ride!!!❤
It's really PUMPING..JEEESCH
Great compilation!
fun to watch locals experience great waves
OMG !!!!
Pretty cool!
Oooooohhh My what a crazy sess
Those tube rides are awesome.
They had some nice breaks that day. I love riding the Pacific. Great video.
OTC 💯💥
🤙 Yeah Now 🤙
Wow when saw the title did not expect this big!!! Always loved how solid waves quickly sort out the men from the boys. So many people do not want any part of it once it gets real solid.
Just found your channel. Incredible waves! Was sunset cliffs going off? I'm 67, live in NorCal now. Moved to ocean beach in 1978, next 13 yrs lived in OB and later point Loma. Some of the Best years of my life.
Are you still surfing?
I'm 40 and my journey to learn how to surf is about to begin going out for a surf this week hope I catch my first wave 🤙🏾
I surfed OB, PB, MB, Baja, etc., ‘75 to ‘79. Liked Del Mar a lot, less crowded back then. Now 65, SD native, moved away ‘80
@@onedrop6011 stick with it, the first twenty years is just to see if you are interested in learning how to surf. 🤙🏻
New Break
Love your videos. Blacks does a great impersonation of Padang when conditions are right.
The carnage is real in that intro.
Man you should have seen the waves the night the swell peaked. I was in that same spot in La Jolla at 0:00 and the sets were ENOURMOUS I couldn't believe how far the waves were breaking. Poor seals got wiped clean off the rocks on one particularlaly large set, and the water actually went over the wall into the grass area.
😮😮🔥🔥🔥
BIG WEDNESDAY!!!
Next time you get to La Jolla get some footage of the reefs near Windansea. It's always pumpin!
Half of those waves were Bigrock
Swami's has been known to hold up with very good waves and a large swell also. But everyone wanted to focus on Black's, etc.
Looks tasty!
This looks so much more fun than Ocean Beach, SF!
すご〜い😂
Best pipeline day at Blacks
La Jolla! feeling a touch home sick now.
0:41 ... It was at this moment he knew he F'ed up 😆
The "Fentanil Beach"!!!!😂
The Cove has almost always sucked when it gets that large. It’s really just a drop. But, all the other reefs and the La Jolla beach break waves looked amazing.
😮
Ooooh my gat
Some sick little nuggets stashed in this vid.
Thanks Eh 🤙🏻
gnarly with all the debri in the water
Trash?
Damn. I bet most locals were not in in the water that day...
One day, this will be me in the waves there. :) but not yet.
0:54 That's pipeline right there
Nuts and perfect
that is so crazy the falls hit you and just throw you off your board. Paddling out has to be totally crazy....without a jet ski.
those last waves shown look really deadly, I wonder if the guy washed over at the end has really gotten out without any injury
That one was brutal.
I think you can say generally that the bigger waves in this video are at Black's Beach and the less big ones are at La Jolla Cove. Tell me if I am wrong, though. In any event, these waves are bigger than I ever saw them when I was growing up in San Diego.
Big Rock are those hollow lefts in video.
Awesome! Would love to showcase some of your footage on my channel.
What a compilation…
Never seen waves like that @ The Cove. Neither have they, judging by their intimidation, leading me to conclude there isn’t much “big wave surfing in San Diego.” (But ya know, Eddie Would Go!)
It was way bigger in winter of 1982. The waves were so big you could feel the vibration when a wave broke when you were standing on solid ground. Two friends and I stood there (looking straight west from La Jolla Cove) for hours in the cold rain and watched. It was the most violent waves I'd ever seen, by far. Initially there were 3 surfers out there, but after 1 got caught inside and couldn't get back out (he rode whitewater onto the rocks and luckily survived), the authorities fished the other 2 out with a helicopter.
I have hard time describing just how violent it was. There was some underwater feature that caused some really violent actions on the wave, like if a hypothetical surfer caught the wave, the secondary feature would have pitched him into the air. The waves were 30 to 40 feet, but it was hard to tell because there were no reference points (no people or anything else).
I"ll never forget it. Someday I hope to see something else like that. Feel the ground rumble when the lip crashes.
That swell of 82 was legendary. The write-ups in Surfer and Surfing mags had epics pics showing both the bombs coming through and the destruction left behind
@@wisu3529 I'm glad someone else remembers it and verifies that I'm not just telling a fish story! As for the wave: the "feature" I'm talking about must've been some sort of weird protrusion on the ocean floor. When a sufficiently large wave contacted it, a ripple would travel perpendicular to the direction of the wave. So, the wave is heading west and as it's about to break, it contacts the feature and the ripple would propagate north along the lip of the wave. It was violent and probably only a world class surfer would have even a small chance of staying on their board. I've never seen anything like it (the ripple) before or since, not even on any big wave youtube videos. Not even Shipstern's.
Only the largest waves would get that ripple. Off the coast of ultra-gentrified La Jolla, of all places. I wish there was digital video back then, it would have been nice to have been able to archive it.
SoCal waves are bigger than East Coast waves. Those waves actually almost easier to catch...this SoCal Filipino's getting homesick too:)
What happened to the wave @2:40
The amazing part is how they get back out through the crashing waves.
What's that spot with the big rock? 😉
any shots from Redondo ?
What was that black thing at 18 second mark surfer went over?
Mini Nazare
:17 What is that dark shape under brother's board?
"Surfers are advised to stay out of the water until the danger of large waves subsides" - SLO radio station
Is that La Jolla cove?
What is in the water below the first surfer in the video at 0:16?
It looks like Kelp.
2:20 Lip to Head action
Some waves look really good set up but then they mush out - crush city.
NEED TO MOVE BACK
Almost looks like Navarro. The first few seconds. Not Navarro but as big almost on some sets!!
Stoke!🤙🤙 Thanks for sharing !😊 Made me holla out loud at home!🌊🤙
0:29 was he okay?!
San Diego?? Where and when?
La Jolla and this was like during Xmas lmfao
First wave Is Renz…
Thought this was Nazare at first glance
what part of SD is this?
La Jolla🤙🤙🤙
That was sick as F_ck. Blacks. Was pumping. Thank you for the footage
does pumpin just consist of closeouts and fat shoulders?
@@krusher74 I like fat shoulders. There were some good rides
No reason to name spots ever.
@@therealbeans I think by now everybody knows where blacks is at
@@Middlefinger696 100% no reason to name spots ever. You are cool, there you go isn’t that what you wanted do you feel cooler naming spots! Real surfers don’t name any spots and you show how much of a kook you are by naming them. Go home!
When I was young this was off limits. Boomers was body surf only and you had to take off around the buoys. Couldn’t even use a hand plane and was enforced.
What is that dark thing at 0:17 ?
My thoughts exactly?! 🦈
Looks kinda like a dolphin
Dolphin
clean up aisle > 5
Jersey?
Yep, that big left was 8th st in OC circa 1985 🔥
1:55 thats one inch from getting his head sliced WTF
Ya way too many people out there to make it enjoyable.
looks like pipe line
Boomers. - stayed with bud miller Red Roost circa 1969. - we knew his mom in Venezuela
Was huge as this. - finished at La Jolla shores
Nobody out. - 2
Gotta be Blacks.
If it’s Blacks where’s the TNA 😂 🤙
MDT VISA CARD, MASTER CARD, AMERICAN EXPRESS CARD БЕЗ ДЖИРОСВАНЕ
Why is every surfer wearing a wetsuit? Is that because the water is too cold, or is it to protect the skin from wounds?
Cold - local water usually comes down the coast from the Arctic and can sometimes be very cold.
The water is maybe 57 F degrees and the air in the low 60s in January in San Diego.
kinda small for me
Get your head out of your pants, bro.
Dick sizing I see. At least dude is out there.
:17 wtf is that
stealing clips from nazare and pipe i see. Nice try!
Ah yes, reposting to increase views and subscriptions, socal sold out

It’s almost like you’re complaining about the free content you get to watch on RUclips … naaah that can’t be it
@@zaqintosh nah I'm complaining about sellouts
