20/20 ‘Long Island Serial Killer’ Preview - A look into the Gilgo Beach murders

- The Long Island Serial Killer and the arrest leading to the biggest true crime story of the summer. When 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert disappeared in May 2010, the search led police to Gilgo Beach, Long Island, where they found human remains - not of Gilbert, but of four other missing women who had been working as escorts: Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. Eventually, authorities discovered six other bodies along Ocean Parkway. In the ‘Long Island Serial Killer’ full episode, “20/20” reports on the dramatic twists and turns in the more than decade long investigation to find the killer or killers - ranging from a federal investigation into a police chief to the latest forensic technology - until, according to authorities, the latest DNA technology resulted in the arrest of architect, family man and Long Island resident Rex Heuermann. He has been charged with murder in the deaths of Barthelemy, Waterman and Costello, and has pleaded not guilty just this year.

Michael Pak needs to be in jail as a conspirator to her murder. During the 911 recording, Shannon asks Michael Pak why he is calling her by her real name AND SHE SAYS ‘YOU WERE A PART OF THIS…’ She was not mentally ill and paranoid - SHE KNEW SHE WAS IN A TRAP AND SHE WAS GOING TO DIE.

He also said something on the recording like "let's go, you're out on long island, you're by the water.." with a laugh that always creeped me out

I Agree! I also fill like the corrupt Chief needs to be prosecuted also. It happened on His Watch while he was hooking with Escorts. And turning down vital Help. He could have stopped it. Hum........I’m curious how many of the Escorts got in trouble with the Police? We have heard at least one was. Suppose You looked the other way because I’m going to make a deal with You! It’s been said that Rex was called an Ogre and was creepy and controlling. I’m not leaving my cell phone behind and walk out the door with nothing, but on the other hand , if it’s someone you should be able to trust I’d be more apt. To leave my phone at home. The delays makes one wonder why was it delayed so long ? I’m curious why that area is not maintained? The city parks and recreation cuts the grass at the lake here and maintains it. Theres so many questions.
I think probably, while I do not have experience with call girls, but strippers, etc.. use fake names Mercedes, Jade, Cinnamon, etc.. and not their real names with clients. I think Me Pak probably called her Shannon in front of these guys and she was like “why are you using my name?” . The boyfriend is clearly pond scum, but Mr Pak was just a driver and a bodyguard… I don’t think he had any reason to hurt her. If he did, why would he have waited until there were two witnesses? He had her alone in the car all the way from Manhattan if he wanted to do her harm, he would’ve done it then - no?
Pak was there the entire confrontation outside before she “took off”. What did he say happened exactly?and who was involved exactly? Who was chasing her? Why would she leave the safety of her driver Pak to run off into the night? I wonder if she was given a drug by someone? She seemed terrified. Sure if she was being assaulted and chased by someone from the house Pak would have intervened. Pak was the last to see her. They should dig deeper into his story🤔

I agree there’s a lot of inconsistencies in his story. At times in his interview he seems to be trying to remember “his lines”. I also believe the way he picks up that water glass is very telling also.
They said from the beginning pak and brewer were "cleared early on" but early on, there was barely an investigation and the investigation up until recently was conducted by a half-assed, corrupt group of police so I wonder... also, brewer lived pretty closeby to rex and they would have been the same age back then - were they friends? Seems like brewer and pak must know more than they're saying - even just in the regard to what could have been said to initially set shannan off. And what's the deal with the doctor down the street? There has to be more to the Oak Beach residents' stories.

Question for You : If I said “ Your Going To Kill Me” I would remember that because I’m not a murderer . The driver try’s to act like He can’t remember what Shannon said, in one interview the driver keeps saying “What did She say” then says “Yaw are Going To Kill Me! The John was unemployed, $450 ? This really bothers Me ! Melissa’s Sister Amanda getting the calls from the “Killer”, I fill like the reason Amanda was chosen is because Melissa’s Family Tried and Tried to report Her missing and Her Father Even hired an Attorney. Who would know that the Family called so many times and hired the Attorney. Wouldn’t that be privileged information? Not everyone would know the extent they went through to find Melissa. I just fill like this case is deep.
@@anabanana5333 okay I caught it last night ! Something about it kept bothering me about the “Driver” for Shannon! He has one interview where he states the John woke him up he went to the house and Shannon was crouching down beside the couch . ( next interview) He states , the John came out to my car and said come get her out “Shannon” then he states: Shannon was Standing in the kitchen door way I told her come on “Shannon “ let’s go . Then he states “ the John” kinda grabs her from behind ,Well he put his hand kind of on her sides maybe to try and push her out the door and she took of running.
The 911 operator Shannon was unlucky enough to reach, needs intensive sensitivity training (or maybe an all new career where she doesn’t need it; maybe a gravedigger).
Defense mechanisms I guess/maybe. I wouldn’t want their job.

@@Kjvbrn72you have no idea, plus neighbors called the police and told them exactly where they are, seems the police just didn't look around enough for her, if they couldn't find her that night they should've at least tried by morning time. There's no excuse.

This reminds me of the Sunset Strip murders. 2 young runaway girls ended up at a very well-known celebrity attorney's home for a party. One of them, a 15 year old girl, was raped by this attorney. Her and her sister escaped the house. Then, hours later, both were found dead on the side of the freeway off ramp of Forest Lawn Cemetery. So my question is, what are the odds of being 2 young runaways ending up at a party full of celebrities then escaping that house just to run into the arms of a serial killer? That seems extremely unlikely to me!!!!
Was the attorney arrested, tried and sent to jail? Life for a life in my book.
@llamamama2910 no way, he was filthy rich. I have seen the police reports. There were witnesses who told the police. I don't know where it is where you're from, but ninety-nine percent of the time, you won't go to jail if you are wealthy in L.A. And if you don't think that is true you believe in a false system.
They all work together. Its kinda of a quid pro quo.
The DNA results should be back in the next month(hopefully). We should get some answers but may never know everything.
I’ve been following this case for many years. Why didn’t they make any reference to Dr Peter Hackett, in Shannon Gilbert’s case??? They did not even address it. Shannon’s body was basically found in his backyard and he put himself in the middle of her case. I always thought he was her murderer. In whatever manic state she was obviously in, she ended up knocking on the wrong door!
I can tell you that what you heard ,via the Police, was probably not true in to throw off the Killer, and or any wanna be detectives, who could have blow the case. A lot of information that you collected is more than likely incorrect...

Pak contradicts his self. I really believe there’s more then pak and the John there. I Honestly Believe That there’s more to the Police Chief then meets the eye. Was Shannon a pawn? Pak at times when he’s doing his interview seems to be trying to remember his lines. More then this interview stinks.the more I listen the more inconsistencies I catch.
That boyfriend's blow to her head that broke her jaw and the surgeries to repair could have given her brain damage leading to a psychotic event...not sure who strangled her. Shannon helped us find all those bodies, bless her.

I was the only Homeless NASA PhD Exiled from America in NYC before 9/11 and it was
very tough and I was a younger man in a CIA induced mind fog so I couldn't really try and use the social system to get off the streets nor were there social workers trying to help people back then. I don't remember anybody from Manhattan trying to talk to me about getting into housing programs and that I didn't have to be homeless in Manhattan. That was a long time ago__I returned to Manhattan recently as the only "Senior and Disabled" NASA PhD Exiled from America and I looked around at what happened to Times Square with all the media displays and I immediately took the LIRR to Long Island ending up in Southampton NY. Since I wasted many years in Santa Monica, Venice, and Zuma Beach Malibu I figured Southampton? Beaches? Yeah, I can do that even as an Old Disabled Senior Exiled NASA PhD. If they have bathrooms and outdoor showers I can keep clean and try and organize my life. But then all these murders in Long Island__all these Beach Murders and I'm thinking what if they didn't really catch the killer? I'm next on the hit list so instead of hiding on the beach at night I hid at the Rogers Public Library for 2 months. I tried RiverHead, the next town near Southampton but the same thing happened___they wanted to kill and eat me. I was the Enemy of Long Island. There were no social services for me and I was told if I signed up for NY Department of Social Services I would be butchered like a pig and eaten. By whom? Would you believe the KKK CIA Nazi Telepathic Spooks that have "Taken Long Island" turning it into a Human Hell. So, what happened to these homeless women? They were denied Social Services and were probably told to become prostitutes if they wanted any Long Island money. They were murdered by the state of Long Island.
