I haven’t played the C2. I would guess the c2 has more pop, and a stiffer face. A little less control. Main difference would probably be the stiffer response.
To me, soft on the outside and harder in the middle is the way paddles should be made. The plushness of the kevlar surface, together with the tighter honeycomb core, is opposite other paddles and makes far more sense to me. During the soft part of your game it is best to have the soft part of the paddle on the surface where that is all that is being engaged. Only when you hit harder does the core come into play, and because the pattern on the honeycomb core is smaller than other paddles, this one gives better power when you hit it harder. I hope Apes makes more with greater variety. I would love to see them make one with a thicker kevlar / carbon weave to give even more plushness on the surface.
In my paddle data analysis - Pickleball Apes Proline Energy S ranked 1st when comparing these four categories: spin, power, pop, and price. The pro line energy came in 11th. Very respectable among the giants. Raw data spreadsheet included 78 paddles and was provided by John Kew. To hear it has great control only adds to what I found. good job.
This may be the most underrated paddle of 2023. I think other reviewers didn’t spend enough time with it to make videos. The spin you can get with the new Selkirk pro s1 is insane. I plan to do some spin tests with the apes paddle pro line s and different balls to show how much the ball can change someone’s opinion on a paddle. I believe the apes paddles generate the most spin out of any other paddle I have ever played. To see if I am right or wrong I plan to make a video to find out.
Also, you are right about adding lead tape. I added lead tape to my Energy S and am playing more consistently. I do enjoy the paddle and find it is much more consistent and controllable than my Ronbus R3 with lead tape added and without it. To me, out of the box, the Energy S was more controllable than the R3, my CRBN 1, and my Diadem Icon v2. The Icon v2 is very good with control, but it has far less spin, and the grit wears off far too easily. My Energy S plays better than any paddle I have used. My slow game is better, and my hits have more power, so it is easier to place it at the back line.
I have actually been switching between the apes and the double black diamond this week while I wait on more paddles to arrive. I play so much better with apes. It’s a paddle I can easily adjust to because of the soft feel. I was popping up way too much with the dbd. I think the ceiling is higher with the dbd but the ball or weather can instantly change how you play with that paddle. Kevlar might be here to stay for a while. Six zero has a full Kevlar face paddle coming in December. I should have that one next week. This paddle is easy for me to adjust to since I play so many different paddles.
Sorry for the rant. Based off other reviews this paddle is under valued. It’s frustrating to see them make videos if they didn’t spend a lot of time with the paddle. I love mine. Here’s the thing all other thermoformed paddles play very similar cause they are all made with the same materials. This one has a unique feel, paddle face and look. The paddle face feels like it grabs the ball so I wonder how much of the spin is based on the grit vs the paddle face. I think reviewers rely on paddle stats too much. Yes on paper it performs a lot like other thermoformed paddles. It has play characteristics unlike the rest. That is what makes this unique. It’s not going to blown your mind. I think they dismissed this paddle as average when really it’s one of the few that has its own unique characteristics. Paddle stats will not lead you to the best paddle for you. They will help, but the feel is super important.
Have you tried the Ultra X from The Best Paddle?
Great review, awesome channel. Quick question. About lead tape. How many inches you add, and is 1g by inch or .5 g by inch thanks
I buy lead tape from Dicks Sporting Goods. Maxfli. Not sure how heavy it is. It’s on the lighter side so I put longer strips which I like a lot.
@@EverythingPB thanks so much
@@EverythingPB did you try apes pro line S before? I want some
Info compared with Hyperion c2

I believe they have a blue/black (dark gray) weave coming out.
I think they could really stand out if they can change the color of the Kevlar. I just didn’t know if it was possible.

3K makes a great "looking" face. The addition of the Kevlar threads even really gives the face a sharp look. The performance is another story.

@@EverythingPB Have you played the CHEETAH AF/CF 16mm.? A very different feeling paddle.
I have not. I will check it out though for a future video!
Nice work. Keep it up!
Thanks! I appreciate the positivity
