There are tons of miniature orchids now available for relatively easy terrarium culture. The epiphytic species require high humidity (how they obtain water) but most also need good air circulation. I’ve achieved excellent results using a misting system alternating with small circulating fans in the top. If the roots are kept too wet they often develop root rot and weakened plants become susceptible to plant pests especially if the air becomes totally stagnant. Cycling the light promotes blooming.
African violets and various gesneriads like high humidity but do not like to have soaking wet leaves at all. Their fuzzy leaves retain water which will cause them to rot away especially if the plant crowns are constantly kept wet.
Thanks for the tip! I have considered it, but these tanks have a decent amount of ventilation already. Although, if you can send some links on IG or my facebook that would be awesome!
You guys do some really awesome builds. Low-key jealous-lol! For our next build we are going to try out some orchids again. Buying a few from glass box tropicals and we’ll see what happens. We live in such a dry climate that it’s difficult to get the humidity and air flow just right for orchids. I liked this format of you taking an existing enclosure and reworking it.
Same here! Gets me in the mood to get working on the blue histo vivarium! Long weekend here... it's getting started... and maybe finished depending how hard I go haha
@@MikeTytula Awesome! If you happen to find out please post an update. I’d be interested to know. Crazy how similar they look. Lance Leaf looks awesome, but grows tall so fast
Fantastic video. I’m actually in the process of getting some plants for some terrariums I’m going to be making friends and family as gifts- so far I’ve gotten a few varieties of Ficus pumila, Pilea depressa, several Fittonias, peperomias and Seneca rowleyanus. This is such a deep deep rabbit hole! Thanks as always for your content. And don’t you hate it when Orchids choose violence? 😂
@@MikeTytula love it! My first college roommate in (ahem, 1988) was huge into orchid breeding. He even has a species or cultivar at least, named after him! Hey Mike! I have been setting up my first vivarium with the filter foam and substratum method, and had some questions about planting into it. I recently planted a sonerila into my foam, and just cut out a hole of the filter foam and stuck the root ball in with some milled sphagnum. Do you have any tips for planting these longer root plants in the foam? The substrate mix you added in this video seems like it would make it easier, but you don’t seem to have a substrate mesh to keep it out of the foam. Does the heavy misting not push it all down and give you a sloppy mess fully of bacteria in the bottom of your tank? Thanks!
The filter foam itself should act as the screen filter. Of course you can definitely add a screen mesh overtop of it. Perhaps I will on the tank that I am building tonight on Livestream!
Hey man love the vids! Have you ever thought about a potential collab with Serpa design 👀 also what sort of maintenance do you do for your orchids I’ve had horrible luck
@@MikeTytula me too !gotta have my coffee !..I got a crested gecko 3 wk ago she doing great !had her 1st shed .n it was perfect of coarse she ate it lol 😂 I named her bindi after Steve Irwin daughter
Orchids are hella underrated in builds. They are such good dart frog plants.

They are incredibly underrated, but can be challenging as the crucible mentioned on this
Aw man, you're so lucky to have such a cool greenhouse in your town. Great video.
Ya there are a couple good ones that we shop at! Love Kim's nature though
I love that getting caffeinated is first on the list.
@@bolezy9070 it’s a must!
Beautiful viv! I want to see you setting up a NEW tank!
Soon my friend... maybe I'll wait 2 years to post the video though ;) heheheheh
I quite like enclosure builds so please welcome more of them with detail would be nice 👍🏽
Will be working on the big one this weekend! Stoked!!
I love your plant/vivarium content, please make more of it! Great inspiration and tips for my own tank :)
There will be several new builds and remodels coming soon to the channel!

It definitely dries in there, but hopefully where I put it now will lend to better growth
that's a awesome greenhouse !
Ya Kim's nature is a blast!
Add PC fans to your vivs, saved my broms and other plants that need high humidity but not a lot of moisture. Works great for orchids also!
I can give you ideas and links of what you may need for what I use for my vivs

Thanks for the kind words! For dry climates, I'd recommend a glass top and a small circulation fan within the terrarium!
Great video! I like revamping videos. It gets me in the mood to do some remodeling. 😂

I should redo mine too😅
hahah getting that point eh?
Hi Mike. I love your videos. Great job. It is so beautiful.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy the videos :)
Great video as always
Thanks Chantal!
Nice revamp! Hope to see an update later after it grows in.
That one you refer to as a Philodendron looks like a Syngonium Lance Leaf.
It definitely looks like a syngonium but it's not... which blows me away! i will definitely update in a few months!

Will do! I will try and ID it for the next time I showcase it. It looks a lot like a lance leaf, but I swear I bought it as some sort of philodendron

Great looking terrarium. Any more shots or videos of that antfern @10:49?
Thanks for watching! I will make sure to show it in the coming reptile room tour!
