  • After several strut projects the last month, I think I've come up with the absolute fastest and easiest way you can do the job while removing as few parts as possible. I'll show you step-by-step disassembly and assembly when I remove the strut to replace the shock and spring. The procedure is almost identical for the 997 and other Porsches 911.

Just replaced my 204000 km OEM's with 50,000km OEMs and wanted to thank you for this helpful
Video! I found the hardest part is lining up the strut hole to slide bolt back, takes a bit of time but all in all was a fun job 4 hours later. Got to see my super low oil level for hydraulics to power convertible, ordering oil now, thx again!

Hi, good video, I just completed this job on my 996 carrera, 1998, original Bilstein replaced with identical. I take my hat off to you, because I did not manage to get the bottom bolt back in to fix the shock. I had to get help, even with jack underneath the shock, not enough hands to adjust the position, and at the same time push the bolt through. 👍👏

Thanks! Appreciate the compliments 😁👍 It's always a bit of a pain to get bolts like that aligned, but it was a breeze compared to the steering column 😖 that was the worst!

How can you tighten the top nut properly when the strut is bolted into the car ? I can only hold it so tight with pliers whilst tightening the Central nut, the whole shaft spins when i try to torque it.
I have bought an open ended strut tool but it it doesn't have the tool to fit over the end of the shaft to stop it spinning.

Are the plastic seat/shim/insulators that go between the washer and shock mount a soft rubber? I'm curious if they need to be replaced.

Mine were in good shape, so I did not. You should be able to tell from a visual inspection, and the milage👍

Interesting you could compress the spring back into place with only the strut nut. Looks like the spring only needs to compress about 5mm - sound about right? I hate spring compressors, scare the heck out of me. Doing this job over the next week though.
Maybe I should just order coilovers now and return the new damper.

Yes, I do think it's possible to do the job without spring compressors, they are really quite friendly though 😜
Coilovers would be nice, but I have to say I have been very happy about the low milage OEM setup that is on it now. Rides very well👌

@@NorwegianCarGuy I have compressors, I just hate having to use them. However most of the coilover kits also need the top hats etc moved anyways so it's compressors either way! Thanks for fast reply!

Remove from you title 986 & 987, that's not accurate at all. System is super different. Was doing mine this weekend and nothing is similar.
