All the nagging about the click bait title has won, so I changed it. Honestly though, feeling beat down by all the negative energy in the comments section recently. Yes, it wasn't exactly the versus video I wanted-- but the title wasn't totally inaccurate. It seems most other successful RUclipsrs click bait the hell out of their content-- and it makes sense as they get more clicks, and more money. This stuff costs alot of money and time to create-- and I haven't made a dime factoring the cost involved. Don't let the comments of others bring you down. This isn't HS. You do you. You're a funny guy with a good amount of talent, and a great passion for cars. If you don't want to make them anymore, we'll understand why. Just do what makes you happy - a real fan would have your back either way.
Hoovies Garage I enjoy your videos. I don't care what title says I watch because I find you amusing. Not because of title. So f@@k the negative content people they are just jealous.
subliminal1284 or comparing a $40k brand new vehicle vs a 15 year old $300 Cherokee that probably had a cracked head or blown head gasket and he's taking it on the trail knowing he bought a problem Cherokee. What kind of comparison is that? that would be like saying some kid with broken legs should have run faster than a pro athlete in a race.
@@FernandoDenise2558 no I think he's right. That new Jeep is definitely not a real Jeep like the old ones. I'm surprised that jeep with the minivan engine to make it up any Hills. It definitely it's not ever going to be a high mileage vehicle that's for sure being a product of Chrysler. Nothing like that Old Reliable AMC 4.0L straight 6.
I love manuals but auto wranglers with edge out manuals.... it just about every area.. plus you have manual mode which is useful for control. I drive a manual 1994 defender and an auto wrangler and the wrangler has more control with less risk.... you don't even need to go into 4 hi or low with the auto as you don't risk fucking with the clutch... its crazy how far an auto wrangler with 2wd will get you. I do love driving manual and the defender is a blast but the auto wrangler has the edge
My guess is block in the radiator, but yea the thermostat is so easy/cheap to replace you should do that first. And of corse it can even work without a thermostat if you need to remove it one the trail.
His videos with cars constantly having problems are becoming annoying. Especially when it's simple problems like overheating. Why can't he just have it fixed and be done with it?... Watching cars not breaking down is much more entertaining.
The problem you could be having is that you're water pump impellers are nearly rusted away. My sister had a Jeep Cherokee that blew a weak spot in the radiator, so I replaced it, and all the hoses and thermostat. But then it kept overheating to the point that antifreeze was erupting out of the reservoir. So I took off the water pump and found a water pump with not an impeller, but rather a rusty pizza cutting wheel. I hope this helps.
$40k can do a lot of things ;gtr, corvette, r8, porsche, viper, mustang gt, g wagon, rover, bentley, heck even a true offroad lifted wrangler unlimited with offset wheels. Last thing I'd spend that on is a stock jeep wrangler
jonathon edwards ah yes definitely the old Cherokee but I reckon a defender would give the rubicon a fair run for its money. But admittedly it would be a close call.
Robbie Dixon but I think it's the price that'd nail it. Over here in the U.K. there's no where near the difference in price difference so the defender is a no brainer, but in the US there's a lot less defenders around so does the defender warrant? Or does the Cherokee make more sense?
The XJ has never been noted as having the best cooling system. The limited space for the rad is part of the problem. Having said that, the pressure on the rad cap and then the top rad hose after the rad cap was replaced - points to an obvious problem that I have experienced on both my XJ and ZJ. The first solution is to replace the thermostat. Chrysler, installs a 195 to thermostat which is inadequate for cooling - given such a limited cooling system. Replace with a 160 or 125 to thermostat. Don't worry about open loop. I would also power flush the cooling system.
looks like you need a new head gasket, had the same issue with no real fluids mixing but it would over heat even after "burping" the system after a while it would run just fine an boom start to get hot. just do the basics considering its got 300k and im pretty sure the owners manual says to change the head gasket after a few big miles so heres a list, head gasket, water pump, 160f term ans all basic gaskets an enjoy fr the next 100k plus.
I could guarantee the Cherokees cylinder head is cracked and a compression leak is pressurizing the coolant system. This is very common in the last gen XJ with the 0331 castings and you'll never get all the bubbles "out" because they are coming from the combustion chamber. Why do you think you got it for $300? The seized starter was just hiding the issue. You should replace the cylinder head with a revised 0331 casting from a '01+ grand cherokee 4.0l that has the letters TUPY embossed between the cylinder #4 & #5 valve springs. Or, buy a replacement from Clearwater castings which have also resolved the issue. This will greatly improve the resale value to someone who knows what to look for.
Keep the faith. I discovered your channel by accident & have been really enjoying your stuff on cheap cars especially. Don't lose heart about any negative reviews; it's easy to be an armchair warrior. Most of us appreciate the work that goes into these video's but don't comment. The silent majority likes what you're doing.
I do recall watching a comparison video of the XJ vs. the new Cherokee. It was interesting but I feel that the XJ is more than capable for off roading. I think if you had a mechanically sound XJ it would give the XJ a run for the money.
Honestly this is now one of my favorite automotive channels on RUclips. Tyler paints such a great picture of what it is like to own a fleet of beaters. It simulteneously makes me want to go get a fleet of shitboxes for the good times, or lease a CVT Corolla for the guarantee that I won't be stuck on the side of the road with a fucked up cooling system.
I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee. It has not cooling problems even when pulling up steep hills for extended periods of time. The temperature should not rise over 220. I would first check the radiator with a thermal camera/laser if you can borrow one from a friend. Check if there are any blockages. If you have already replaced the thermostat, I would check the Water pump since i'm guessing it has only been changed once in its lifetime and is due for a replacement. The plastic fins are probably either gone or on their way out. Also, flush the living hell out of it. Extra: You should not have bubbles in the system if it has been filled correctly (adding fluid while the motor is running cold). If you do, then there is probably a blockage somewhere that is collecting air (radiator?).
I drive a manual 1994 defender and a 2015 auto JK... I love manual and its a blast offload but the auto wrangler does edge it out... you don't even need to shift into 4hi or 4 low where you'd defiantly want it in a manual vehicle
My 89 Cherokee has done advanced trails with both sway bars connected and a sketchy cooling system at high altitude with no lockers without a problem. It's driving on the road where everything breaks.
Hoovie as a car enthusiast you should know that any older car you buy, you should replace the complete cooling system and belts, specially when the parts are super cheap like that Cherokee.
Oh man those old Cherokee cooling systems. My buddy has an 88 cherokee that's been through 2 water pumps, a radiator, and 3 expansion tanks in the last 4 years. And it still overheats on a mild incline. I honestly don't know why he still keeps it around.
Bleeding the 4.0L I-6 is simple. Remove the heater hose from the t-stat housing while filling the system. As a Jeep tech, that's how I've always done it and never had an issue, never spent more than 3 minutes bleeding. If you're surprised that a Jeep Rubicon is capable, you've had your head in the sand dude.
I know this is kind of late but if it is only overheating at low speeds it might be the electric fan not kicking on and if it is that it could be a bad temp sensor the fan itself is bad or the fan relay is not working so if you still couldn’t figure out what’s wrong try the fan.
Tyler, you have to change the entire coolant system of your Cherokee, new radiator, new fans, new water pump, of course new liquids, and a new hose if you haven't replaced the other one yet.
Same thing happened to my 1996 ranger 2 years ago, but from the back to the front, water pump exploded due to a stuck rusty thermostats and temp module then a few weeks later the upper radiator hose started leaking and finally the radiator cap needed replacing
it's probably got a cracked head that's why it was three hundred bucks put a head on it vent the hood and it'll kick the crap out of that $40,000 piece of shit for like 2500 bucks including the cost of the Jeep. the V6 in the Wrangler likes to eat head gaskets also
406 nova The pentastars? I know the old 3.8 was trash but I've only heard good things about the 3.6 pentastar. Not great fuel mileage, but fuck it it's a Jeep.
406 nova whenever I bought an XJ I usually just replaced the whole cooling system. all the parts are fairly simple and durrable, you can get away with cheap parts. $100 rad, $30 hoses, $5 tstat, $35 water pump, $40 for coolant. I love this guy but those issues are easy and cheap to fix!!
406 nova or a blocked radiator. wouldn't be surprised mine was overheating, needed a new radiator and some hoses to bypass the heater valve. flush to cooling system, new fan clutch and make sure the e-fan is working. doesn't always have to be a cracked head.
It's floored because those JKUs are heavy af and the 3.6 doesn't have the torque. My stock 97 Cherokee with 30s followed JKs down every trail they attempted. It's shorter, narrower, much lighter and has more torque. XJ cherokee is definitely a better wheeler than a JK, especially if you modify it.
I had all the issues you described in a 2000 wrangler sport with the 4.0, never solved but it helped to drive with the heater at full blast. Lucky for me, it was stolen and I made money off it (got a good deal on, was worth alot more).
sounds like you may have a head gasket issue. We have 3 cherokees and have had many more in the past and the head gasket is common on the 4.0. If your cooling system is in decent shape radiator not clogged and thermostat working properly etc.. I'd make sure you have the stock 13lb radiator cap then do a coolant pressure test for leakage that could be overpressurising your system. love the videos! good luck with the xj
Cherokee has a bad thermostat. Stuck closed. Explains high pressure at top end and difficulty bleeding the system. I went through the same problem with mine.
The past couple days have been pretty meh for me. Along comes a Hoovie video. Sure enough, turned that frown upside down. Thanks Hoovie! (and don't give up the hoopdee fleet, that guy Doug did that and he's boring now)
what do you expect from a 300 dollar cherokee? i bought one for 3800 its a 2001 sport 4x4 from prescott az with 140k miles and it works and runs like a charm
Shame about the $300 jeep, hope nothing is seriously wrong with it causing it to build pressure in the coolant. I don't know a whole lot about those engines, seen 'em everywhere, broke down a lot too. I suppose if the coolant is staying green, and the other fluids are staying whatever they're supposed to be, it shouldn't be a huge worry... Probably... Good luck man! I just bought a $450 94 Nissan Sentra with only 121k miles on it, seems to be less of a hoopty than I thought it would be, but time will tell. Already found a broken wheel stud and I haven't even started digging into it.
I gotta say man, I love how fresh and unique your content is. High quality too! Good stuff Ive noticed this seems to be the trend with you autotrader journalists, (Tavarish, Doug, ???)
JK's have an Aluminum Heat-Shield suspended over the muffler held on by Steel-Bolts that corrode the Aluminum and drops resting on it and rattling!!! Remove the Shield if this is the case..
Sounds like the Cherokee has a blown head gasket. I bet either compression or exhaust pressure is leaking into the coolant passage. That will cause the radiator cap and upper hose issue.
also. to bleed the cooling system correctly. the front end must be higher than the rest of the car. I.E. park it on blocks or a curb. you must fill it. then burp the system lots by squeezing hoses. itll take a good 30 mins to fill it. and trust me it will keep on drinking. the 4.0 has lots of places for air to build inside the engine due to the design. hope this info helps.
Great video. One suggestion, though. RUclips's codec doesn't handle videos with lots of tiny movements (as you'll find in videos with either tons of vegetation, or in this case, sparse bushes and tons of tiny pebbles) too well, especially with what little max bandwidth it allows for the video feed. Apparently, it's a lot more considerate towards 4K videos, so maybe you could upscale your 720p vids to 4K, or 1440p so we can all benefit from artifact-less reviews. Keep up the great work.
The wrong with your cooling system is your engine!!! Your engine has a bad gasket... do not change your radiator because the new one will do the same. I like what you are doing go ahead big like.
406 nova is correct. You've got a cracked head. Look under the oil fill cap for a 0330 stamped in the head. If you see that then you've got a bad casting. The head will leak because the water jacket was made poorly. Trust me, it happened to me.
According to Kelly Blue Book, a 2013 Jeep Wangler Unlimited with 15,000 miles in "very good" condition is worth $25-$27k. Aren't we comparing used values??
my cousin had a 94 and his fix was sawing two holes in the hood and putting vents in. great thing about those old cherokees is who the hell cares if you beat the hell out of it
No doubt that's the way they are now, but it was only 5 years old at the time... Eventually someone wrenched the hood open and tried to still the battery, then the hood release cable broke and I couldn't open the hood. I became sick of it and traded it in.
what are your requirements for a vehicle to make it to your garage? there is a beautiful 300zx twin turbo out here in California for $5500 with 80+k miles but overheats. I found it on Craigslist and was thinking on picking it up once I get up to that savings point... but I'd honestly rather watch you own it
Don't give up on that cherokee, fix the cooling system and that 4.0L will go for ever.
Once fixed I want to see the $300 Jeep Cherokee vs. Doug DeMuro's $70,000 Land Rover Defender.
I'd love to see them do a colab. But they probably live in different states :/
bios47 Doug lives in Pennsylvania
Rood trip video opportunity
Yes! That would be interesting ;
I want to see Doug DeMuro run over by the Cherokee.

I think that Jeep has a blown head gasket. That's why the coolant pressure kept building, even after the air has been bled out the system.
Coolant is not flowing. Thermostat stuck closed or water pump impeller gone.
Maurice Searcy but if there is too much pressure in the coolant system and air too, it looks like a blown head gasket...
Thermostat replaced, replacing the water pump and radiator AFTER testing the head gasket.
Maurice Searcy Water pump is normally quite an easy diagnosis because when they do go they can be pretty loud.

Tyler, you have to change the entire coolant system of your Cherokee, new radiator, new fans, new water pump, of course new liquids, and a new hose if you haven't replaced the other one yet.
Nice video btw, was hoping the $300 Cherokee could make it, maybe if you change the entire cooling system it'll get there.

There is a little hex key nut you remove to bleed it
it's probably got a cracked head that's why it was three hundred bucks put a head on it vent the hood and it'll kick the crap out of that $40,000 piece of shit for like 2500 bucks including the cost of the Jeep. the V6 in the Wrangler likes to eat head gaskets also
406 nova The pentastars? I know the old 3.8 was trash but I've only heard good things about the 3.6 pentastar. Not great fuel mileage, but fuck it it's a Jeep.

I love this guy but those issues are easy and cheap to fix!!
Yep cracked head or head gasket leaks. That's not air 'trapped' in the system that's combustion pressure and boiling.
406 nova or a blocked radiator. wouldn't be surprised mine was overheating, needed a new radiator and some hoses to bypass the heater valve. flush to cooling system, new fan clutch and make sure the e-fan is working. doesn't always have to be a cracked head.
Rebuild or replace head and gasket, water pump and thermostat, and rest of hoses, should be good to go for awhile.
the coolant overflow line on cherokees can clog solid with rust and other engine debris and cause overheating and pressure happened to me twice

Your Jeep has maybe a Thermostat problem or a head gasket problem. Do a CO2 test to make sure no compression goes into the cooling system
what do you expect from a 300 dollar cherokee? i bought one for 3800 its a 2001 sport 4x4 from prescott az with 140k miles and it works and runs like a charm
Don't ever stop doing these things. Your show is great I wish there was a way to help you with the funding.
I did a quick review of a 2017 Wrangler 2 door, I really was not a fan of the vehicle. I agree with that hummer statement wholeheartedly
I gotta say man, I love how fresh and unique your content is. High quality too! Good stuff
Ive noticed this seems to be the trend with you autotrader journalists, (Tavarish, Doug, ???)
JK's have an Aluminum Heat-Shield suspended over the muffler held on by Steel-Bolts that corrode the Aluminum and drops resting on it and rattling!!! Remove the Shield if this is the case..
Hoovie you forgot to make the video public...
Don't mean to rub it in but, that's what happens when you buy an old jeep... Just Expect Every Paycheck.
Where's the Garage Tour?☹️
Sounds like the Cherokee has a blown head gasket. I bet either compression or exhaust pressure is leaking into the coolant passage. That will cause the radiator cap and upper hose issue.
I don't think the overheating issues will be too difficult to take care of.
If only I could buy that XJ from you...
aye 100k subs congrats man
You know when hoovies uploads it's a good day, been here since 12k subs !
BRUH I JUST REALIZED HE HIT 100k wtF
That reference was the best I’ve ever heard. Well sung. Chitty chitty bang bang was a pretty good movie
well, maybe you should change the thermostat and pump on the side of the road.
Hoovies, appreciate the great videos ! Keep'em coming
head gasket, blocked rad or water pump only other things can be in the cooling system.
Cooling problems suck. It's still going though.. and for 300 bucks is amazing
At the cost that you got that Cherokee, I wouldn't even guess twice about throwing a new short block in it and be done.
Your head gasket is done. change it. gaurentee you. and replace all the hoses. they are probly oem. just some tips from a 14 year cherokee owner.
also. to bleed the cooling system correctly. the front end must be higher than the rest of the car. I.E. park it on blocks or a curb. you must fill it. then burp the system lots by squeezing hoses. itll take a good 30 mins to fill it. and trust me it will keep on drinking. the 4.0 has lots of places for air to build inside the engine due to the design. hope this info helps.
That old jeep is very common where I live in Chattanooga Tennessee! I see it everywhere
you have to pull the water temp sender from the back of the block to burp a cherocar.
'98s seemed to have a lot of cooling system issues.
LOL love watching your videos, they keep me well entertained. Keep up the good work!
As my family used to say on steep hills, LEAN FORWARD! THAT WILL HELP THE CAR GET UP THE HILL!!
um its your water pump bro. Hot on the top and cold on the bottom is almost always a water pump issue
Beautiful scenery - where was this filmed?
Take the thermostat off. Not necessary when climbing trails
Congrats for 100K subs
The mountains in the background (0:58) looks absolutely stunning. Where is that?
Based on the final location, I bet your AMG could get in there. Although you might have to cut it out with a saw.
The wrong with your cooling system is your engine!!! Your engine has a bad gasket... do not change your radiator because the new one will do the same. I like what you are doing go ahead big like.
bring it to a place that has a vacuum pump for cooling systems...dodges have air locks in the cooling sytem
Ok, I give up. You win.
Bob Marley this is a Rubicon hard rock though
With a suspension lift, custom bumpers, winch, axle locks? Like this, they sell for near retail money at the wholesale auctions.
Hoovies Garage i got your back boss don't worry
PLEASE keep the 80s corporate video music! it can become your trademark.
I had a 1995 Cherokee and the cooling system is definitely a weak point. It loves to get air pockets behind the thermostat.
my cousin had a 94 and his fix was sawing two holes in the hood and putting vents in. great thing about those old cherokees is who the hell cares if you beat the hell out of it
No doubt that's the way they are now, but it was only 5 years old at the time...
I found it on Craigslist and was thinking on picking it up once I get up to that savings point... but I'd honestly rather watch you own it
hoovie you should try to make a video on the first gen nissan pathfinders, great little 4x4 jdm cherokee alternative that will not break the bank.
You made me buy a 996, but I'll be sure to fit an accusump before I go near a race track.
What lift and size tires are you running on the Jeep Wrangler rubicon?
Well done Tyler! Please stay in the hooptie business! Your videos are unique and different and I like that.
