Your right . I remember seeing a RUclips video once made by a race car driver who claimed it takes at least twenty minutes for an engine to be completely warmed up . not only does the oil have to get heated up but the engine parts need to expand to fit .
and it takes me 20 minutes to get to work (if traffic is light) so by the time i pull into the parking lot at work; my engine is fully warmed up (except during winter where the Geniuses thought it was a good idea to LOCK OUT 4th gear if the ATF temperature is below a certain point; and the ONLY Time it does this is during the first startup of the day!)
I'm glad wizard is patient with you Tyler, because you are an idiot with a wrench. Anybody with half a brain disconnects the battery first. Get with the program, fella, huh? Geez louise
I saw it coming when i saw what tools he was using. I was like we are going to see sparks. then the hammer I was like OMFG he has to know more then that. I hope it was all just for show.
Wow that Cherokee looks spotless in the video. I'm not surprised the engine is in such good condition with those miles because that engine has really good metal in it. The fuel injection prevents it from getting too much gas when you open the throttle which used to wash down the oil with the carburetor-ed versions. So now, the cylinder walls last much longer. Change oil at least at 5000 miles and it stays clean inside. A friend put me on to synthetic oil and I have used it ever since. He drives easy and runs the synthetic for 10000 miles but changes the filter at 5000 and tops it off. I'm still old school and change it a 5K
Ask the machine shop if you can record the head resurfacing process.. and the reinstall of the head! And first crank ? Record it all I love these jeeps
This 4.0 is a childhood memory of mine - first gen XJ of my parents. Still the coolest SUV ive been in so far. Those were the times for real offroad cars. *deams*
I got an 03 grand Cherokee one of the last jeeps with the 4.0L i6 and it's a great engine. Use it daily, good power in the woods, and gas sucks but it's a heavy jeep with quadra drive so running full time 4wd
Some of the most reliable American engines of all time that should’ve never been killed off...The AMC 4.0L 242 in-line 6, the GM 5.0L 305 and 5.7L 350 V8’s. the Ford 4.9L 300 in-line 6, 5.0L 302 and the 5.8L 351 V8’s. Dodge’s 5.2L 318 and 5.9L 360 V8’s.
Sloan V every single police department in the us begs to differ there's police departments that are restoring the older Vic's because they hit the limit of their service life because they are so reliable and run forever
Just hit 252k miles on my 98 ZJ 5.9. after having a couple 4.0s, I never imagined Chryslers V8s to be this reliable . Only con is the mpg, almost makes me want to get another 4.0 for a dd.
It's the aluminum coil on plug head they started in the 2000 year range that is famous for cracking. 99 is considered the best year because it still has the cast head. I put an iron head on my 2000 and jerry rigged the coil on plug using pieces of aluminum, if you read this I'd be happy to give you more information. Also, on the passenger side of the radiator there is a drain plug that you can pull with your fingers. And yes, every XJ owner has grazed the ac compressor with the other end of the ratchet. At least it makes it easier to jump bc the ground is right there.
Some of my idiot friends were shooting at a trashed out Cherokee with ar15s and aks, as a joke they wanted to see if it would fire up after about 150 rounds had been shot at it. Kicked over and ran fine
My Jeep has the exact same 4.0 I-6. I'm very interested in this project as mine has over 200,000 miles and still runs really well. Your mechanic seems like a super nice guy and really knows his cars.
You can't beat those inline six engines. I had an 87 Wagoneer 4.0 and that thing was bulletproof. It leaked and always had a few issues here and there, but it never left me stranded.
My 98 XJ with the 4.0 has almost 300k on the clock and still runs like a champ. Had several of the AMC straight sixes over the years and they’ve all been skookum choochers!
Tyler you should have your own comedy show! I have been in love with cars since I could walk. I have not missed any of your episodes. Keep up the good work. I’ll continue watching. 😂😂😂😂😂
jalopnik.com/5980569/owner-crashes-the-worlds-highest-mileage-lamborghini-murcielago It has since been rebuilt and tested by I think Motor Trend or Car and Driver

Hoovie is the most down to earth car youtuber out there, I wish he'd do more content on Hondas and quirky Japanese and European vehicles! His insights onto the Automotive world really puts a golden light to vehicles that would otherwise be forgotten or abused! Thank you Hoovie for not just highlighting Drab overpriced vehicles that no average man would own.
Spicey Wolf Uh, sure, if you call 190hp and 220 ftlb of torque from 4 liters "powerful".. Nissan 4.0 makes 286 ftlb and 270hp. At a higher rpm, but still..
Nick Motsarsky It's a much newer engine... The Jeep 4.0 has it's roots in the Dodge Powerwagon which was built over 70 years ago. If one would completely redesign the Jeep 4.0, it would make much more power. But you're definitely right. For a 4.0 the Jeep engine's power output isn't that impressive but still enough to drive comfortably on the road and powerful enough to drive off road.
Such a great, mechanic friendly design. I owned 3 XJ Cherokees in a row. Sold my last one, a 95 Sport with 250,000 miles to a farmer for $1000 3 years ago because I was buying a house. He still drives it.
Letumbmx i had one in high school . I liked it. I’ve bought a new car since but wouldn’t mind having on again as a third car to do stuff with for my channel
I wish they would have kept the capability of the old cherokee. New ones suck they look ugly and suck off road. Only good Jeep left is the Wrangler. If they made a diesel in the Wrangler I'd buy It instantly
Since it got so hot you can't trust that the piston rings to still be sealing due to tempering may have gone out of them.... I have experienced this happening and it might be fine for a while.... 25 miles or so and then the blowby is gradually increasing to the point when crank vent cant keep up and then you may even see crank seals starting to leak oil and even fail so even if the pistons and block is still OK, also you will see engine performance drop in the same pace, I would suggest replacing the rings, just to save the work of doing that later or worse loosing the patience for the car and get rid of it.... well that's just my opinion :)
If you want a fun cheap car buy and swap....get an old school Ford Festiva (aka first Kia in America) and drop a B6T or BP engine in... Fast and easy swap for sweet, agile and fun go kart thrills! Car cost = $100-$500, engine cost = $500-$1000...if you don't believe that's sick enough... Look what else can be done to them on Jay Lenos Garage!
My first vehicle ever. Had a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic in green. Amazing car and to this day it is a toss up between that and my 2006 LBZ Duramax as my favorite vehicles I ever owned
I'm about to hit 250k on my 3rd XJ. The problem here in New England though @ 250k miles is rust/rot. The straight 6 4.0 L motors however, are unstoppable.
smokesgtp I was able to, pulled out in front of somebody who was running around 70mph and the front end of my ZJ got clipped, spinning us around about 270°, put a healthy twist through the Unibody and the steering box through the side of the engine block!
i used to have a 1995 Cherokee with a inline 6 with 300 HP. I had the head gasket blow twice on it. It looked great outside, but inside it smelt like oil. it was a great thing that you could never kill. it unfortunately got in an accident one day and the entire engine and radiator was shoved into the firewall and the wreck even drove the petals into my leg
Please buy your assistant a very good head light, I use them all the time for any job that requires light and once you get used to them nothing else is good enough. The jeep 4.0 litre engine is possibly the best engine ever made for durability. They seem to last a very long time as you can see. I have owned 2 of these Cherokee's over the years and although the car itself sometimes has issues the drive train is bulletproof. They were really well designed and if you keep the oil changed and don't abuse it you may be able to double your mileage. Imagine getting over 500,000 miles from it.
I've been a professional mechanic for many years, a Headlight is one of you best friends (so ronery) . My first headlight was for bicyclists , well before they were being marketed to mechanics.
One suggestion - so long as you've got the heads off take the whole engine out, check the bearings etc. Replace what needs and you'll likely get another 300,000 miles out of it. The transmission on the other hand - good luck.
I put everything back exactly how I took it apart, on any engine. Even the pushrods will get a wear spot and when you rotate them you can feel where they want to be. That's just me so say what you want. Check the fuses because you grounded out the battery. Btw tell the wizard to get a 4ft led shop light and you can hang them on the hood holes. Night and day difference.
1999-2001 4.0 jeep cherokees have a cracking issue with the head due to smaller exhaust porting for emissions it was revised with the tuppy head but pre-1999 motors rarely crack heads and 360k miles if you change the oil regularly will run just about indefinitely or until the body rots off and the wires turn to dust.
You need to get some wrenching tips from Tavarish (and not singing) so you can give the Wizard a break in some of these projects ! BTW, keep the Jeep, it's just plain bad ass and SUPER clean !!
I love how the rear end of your Mercedes dropped by a few inches just from a head gasket wrapped in a blanket. Also the battery terminal mishap was hilarious! EDIT: I feel like I would buy a Jeep but I love my '94 Pathfinder. I got it for free from friends of my parents and the only thing really wrong with it is that it needs an alignment, fixes on the steering, and a little bit of body work. The drivetrain is in magnificent condition considering that it has 250,000 miles on it!
Always disconnect the negative terminal FIRST. And second, you should really send that head out to be machined flat. There's definitely a high chance of warpage with 360k on the clock! (had mine done at 150k)
Hahaha. I have TOTALLY done that with my car battery before too. Shocked the crap out of myself and my wrench ended up partially melted. That'll wake you up in the morning!
As long as I don't hot dog it, it runs just fine. Immediately revs and spins off.
it was about to be ripped apart anyway; as long as he doesn't tear out the bottom end, its fine.
Geez louise
Exactly. I hate when he does that actually
I laughed too hard at the battery terminal mishap, I regret nothing.
do you even vape bro?
Staged, I'm sure...
I saw it coming when i saw what tools he was using. I was like we are going to see sparks. then the hammer I was like OMFG he has to know more then that. I hope it was all just for show.
whats there to laugh at, how is that even a mishap, you can touch both terminals of the battery without anything happening to you, idiot
I busted out laughing 😂
Those engines are indestructible, god bless the 4.0 💪🏻
Just bought one with 178k and I'm wondering how long I can run it for or till it needs repairs? First time jeep
@@jonc2914 as long as you keep on with maintenance, you’ll be trouble free!! Those engine last more than 300k miles with just simple maintenance!!
@@jonc2914 mine has 350,000 and it’s still running strong :)
You should buy the car wizard a headlamp for Christmas
Effel Offens And a gym membership..
with all the work he's given to the car wizard, he's already bought the guy a nice fishing boat.
Did the car wizard just come back from the dentist with the biggest fizzy drink he could find? Hope it was sugar free!
"As long as I don't hot dog it, it works just fine," - proceeds to rev the engine and burn out of the parking lot.
Wow that Cherokee looks spotless in the video. I'm not surprised the engine is in such good condition with those miles because that engine has really good metal in it. 360,000 miles on a Jeep 4.0l? The engine just finished breaking in
StalkerWolf oh shit..
XJs with good cooling systems will last an eternity.
Mechanic: 360,000 miles, Blown head Gasket, Sat for months with coolant in the Bores? 😮
Jeep L6 : Hold my beer.. 😎
Just needs upgrades lol 😆
Love the way the older Cherokees look. The fact it made it 360K is excellent!
Ask the machine shop if you can record the head resurfacing process.. and the reinstall of the head! And first crank ? Record it all I love these jeeps

That AMC 4.0 is a legend.
I agree!
Then they replace it with that useless 4.7l pos.
the 4.7 was just the v8 option, the 4.0 was still used
3.7. 4.7. Both pieces of crap.

I vote for the cat to be the Official Mascot of Hoovie's Garage!
Second time wouldn´t be a debut...
That would have been hilarious, lol
Wranglers are not pussy magnets!
Hoovie, each time I see a new video by you it never fails to put me in a good mood. Keep doing what your doing and keep up the great content.
The very second I saw that huge socket extension going towards the battery lead. I though that's asking for a OOHH there it was!
One of your better episodes in a while. Thanks for sharing
All the times the Wizard has saved your bacon and you haven't gotten him a $20 headlamp flashlight!? C'mon Hoovie!
I second this motion.
Ditto get the wizard a headlamp
i wish these retro jeeps got re-released.
I would have the valves done as well with that many miles. Fresh rebuilt head on that pile will do wonders.
scott9050 I was just about to say the same thing. For all the extra it's costs and since the heads already off.

Nathan Plummer has

you're joking, right? I'm sincerely asking.
Nope. Id love to put my jeep against his lol.
I'm shocked! the cheapest cherokee in Egypt is around 2.5 to 3k!
I got mine for $500 the body has about 235,000 and the engine (which is a 90 renix 4.0) has 124,000
Damn. I overspent. I spent a whopping $500 on my ZJ

The episodes with the Wizard are the best. Such a likeable guy!
Hoovie, please get the Wizard a proper headlamp to save his teeth! lol

It's worth saving. So clean, no rust. It's a keeper.
A guy I work with just sold his Wrangler with 350,000 miles on it for $3,000 and bought a new Willy’s for $30,000
The GearShots better resale value than a Honda
New Willy’s?
Yeah, what is a new Willy's?
Eric sin I guess he's still stuck in the 50's, lol new willy's
Willys version just like Sahara, Rubicon, Sport....c'mon guys

Unrelated but do the American viewers had mixed race families promoted on their Christmas commercials like we do here in the UK?
Unrelated but why are you looking at commercials? You know you can block them right?

You can't block them from tv
Ok I thought you were talking about youtube.

Yeah you can clearly see the agenda being pushed.
No such thing as a Christian black family either they want it all mixed.

I love seeing updates on the XJ
Bumper to Bumper the car wizards got you covered.
One thing that's nice about OHV engines... taking the head off is a snap compared to OHC engines!
have a '94 grand with the same engine pushing 356k. still runs amazing
I see new video from hoovie and it’s easy, I like then watch
1999-2001 4.0 jeep cherokees have a cracking issue with the head due to smaller exhaust porting for emissions it was revised with the tuppy head but pre-1999 motors rarely crack heads and 360k miles if you change the oil regularly will run just about indefinitely or until the body rots off and the wires turn to dust.
I’m a simple man, i see the car wizard, i upvote.
You need to get some wrenching tips from Tavarish (and not singing) so you can give the Wizard a break in some of these projects ! BTW, keep the Jeep, it's just plain bad ass and SUPER clean !!
"You need to buy the Wiz a head light" was going through my head when he said about maybe he should get one. It's a sign you should buy him one!!!!!!
Watching this guy makes me feel like a real mechanic
Love the 4.0 engine, you can’t kill them.
I have a 96 Cherokee man great Jeep miss it every day while I’m in college!
That was sooo funny about the car battery! Glad the motor pulled through and can keep going, can't wait to see the mess of the Bentley
The C36 looking good at the end there.
Always disconnect the negative terminal FIRST. And second, you should really send that head out to be machined flat. There's definitely a high chance of warpage with 360k on the clock!
(had mine done at 150k)
You make be feel great about myself Thanks Hoovie
Hahaha. I have TOTALLY done that with my car battery before too. Shocked the crap out of myself and my wrench ended up partially melted. That'll wake you up in the morning!
