Wow, so many TH songs to hear with the ESFM mode! You're the best, pc-sound-legacy! IMHO all the songs are better compared to the pure OPL, only "Candy Floss" sounds cacophonic here.
Maybe it is the esfm sounding just different. At least the other records I found are similar in total length. A.E. this one in adlib mode: ruclips.net/video/5FzcVe3fBMI/видео.html
@@pc-sound-legacy Or maybe it's just that now I'm used to listen to the MIDI files, which I ripped from the game years ago. Probably they're being played back at a slightly higher speed because the initial tempo parameter in the ripped MIDI file is higher than the one of the MIDI data in the game itself.
Somebody please explain to me in simple words what's so special about this ESFM? Yeah, it sounds good but I do not hear anything special that the OPL3 can't do either... 🤔 One of the guys that made Adlib Tracker 2 said that every instrument except drums can be replicated accurately with FM (OPL3) synthesis and I have that opinion too. This TH soundtrack reminds me of the Voyetra midi driver that came with the early Aztech cards. Another game that comes to mind with really good standard "Yamaha" music is Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon. Cheers, Dozzy
Hi Dozzy, here is a direct comparison of another tune from Settlers 2. It sounds superior in ESFM to my ears. So if you say opl3 can sound better as well, maybe the esfm version was programmed with more effort than the standard opl3 version. Cheers! ruclips.net/video/hs9ocST0B8w/видео.html
I know that ESFM has a superior (at least on the papers) that must be especially programmed and thus be supported by the software aswell as Yamaha's 4 operator mode. Download Adlib Tracker 2 and search for the Duke Nukem 3D theme. It is written in 4OP mode and I did not believe my ears how realistic the guitars sounded. The standard FM music featured in the original game is not opl sound. It's a crappy standard FM library used by many games. I'd even go that far to say that would more programmers had the guts and the time to properly program the Yamaha chips, it might have never come to ESFM. Cheers!
@@pc-sound-legacy Ernie, when there is a "Driver" included into Settlers that is for ESFM, than chances are high that the developers did the effort to write their tracks to take advantage of the additional features of that chip. But that's exactly what I am saying. It's the very same with the YMF-262. Programm it properly in 4-OP mode and you are all set. Give Cybersphere a go. Though I confess that I cannot hear any differences on Starwars TIE-Fighter between "AdLib" and "4OP-FM". I guess they only made use of the 4-OP FMs rudimentary stereo capabilities.

ESFM: the BEST obsolete PC FM music standard! 😁
This was the only game with ESFM I have found so far. Sounds great doesnt it!
Die Siedler II (The Settlers II) also supports ESFM btw. :-)
@@jenzGuitarist Ohh, One of my favourite games! I will have to try it :)
There are a few others but this has the best soundtrack. And it is a great game, too
Warcraft II also supports ESFM, and it's quite nice in that game, too.
Try to listen ESFM in Z (strategy game). The purest OPL synthesis i heard.
Still remember the order of these songs too after all of this time! :)
Sounds fantastic!
Theme Hospital: the go-to game for healthy cynicism and self-sustaining earworms.
Nice
Heck yeah! 🤘
Klein aber fein!. Hab auch zwei so grüne Dreiecke🎶🙂
Here we are, another variant of one of my favourites :-D
But it's just me, or is this being played at a slower tempo than normally?

Regarding what ESFM can do that OPL3 can't, here are two (very) modern examples:
