- Los Angeles streetcars were taken out of service in 1963, during the boom in car ownership, but now many people in L.A. and across the country are giving up their cars for trains. On Friday riders will start using a new light-rail line between the downtown area and the beach in Santa Monica. Ben Tracy reports.
A message to Los Angeles:
I love how close the LRT is to the freeway just to troll the motorists in the freeways to nowhere
Wow, America is finally slowly coming out of the 70s
I'd rather surf the web on my phone on a train than deal with traffic as a driver.
In two weeks it will be the one year anniversary of the expo line light rail extension to Santa Monica, and I can tell you from personal experience that this train gets packed even on the weekends! With Santa Monica being such a major destination for both visitors and LA residents, this rail line really opened the eyes of people who normally drive, and persuaded them to try out the train instead. I use it every time I want to go to Santa Monica Pier and explore eating places near the Promenade and further east. I got sick of dealing with the traffic there and looking and paying for parking.
Just think, by 2040 LA will have 1/2 as good a light rail system as we had in 1940, WhoHoo!
Many thanks to the late LA Mayor Tom Bradley for defying powerful special interests and spearheading efforts to lay the groundwork for LA’s mass rail transit system.
ICYMI: As soon as the "Expo Line" to Santa Monica opened, it hit ridership levels that were predicted to not occur until 2030. The best part is that, being LRT, increasing capacity doesn't require spending billions of dollars and a decade of planning and construction time, as it does when L.A. widens a freeway.
Why is nobody talking about how good this is for the environment?
This is nothing short of amazing. I lived in Atlanta back in 1989, and I absolutely LOVED using the Metro rail system. Back then, parking was free (after 5pm if memory serves), and I would go to Underground/L5P and have a fantastic time.
2019 I can attest to this. That track is always packed.
CEO of Metro: “It is pretty amazing that people think there’s no public transportation here”
I like public transportation. I used to take the commuter rail down to Salt Lake City, once there I would take the light rail to the university. Gave me time to do homework or just relax.
Just like how Chicago's Blue Line L train to O'Hare Airport runs right between the lanes of congested I-90.
Shoot in NYC there's no choice but to take the subway.
yes i love public transport, it's a lot more interesting, and less work for me...all i have to do is a little bit of walking
Next, I want high-speed rail between cities.
I've started taking the dart in Dallas everywhere and it's nice. 5 dollars a day to ride all over Dallas and surrounding suburbs.
Glad to see mass transit is returning!
trains are going back into its golden ages soon in the years of tomorrow expect these freight company's funding on passenger transports
