Finally Makita ditched the cam latch guards! Just waiting for Hikoki/HPT to get rid of them! I hate them so much

When i was looking into grinders I realised it's totally fine to buy a 4.5" if you don't intend to buy wheels and use it.

Makita should just sell their grinder and include a 5" and a 6" guard so you can use either.

6" grinder is a bit weird and there is not much of options for the guards , Makita has one 6" guard for round €20 (for LXT model), when for both 5" and 9" grinders , you have several different type of guards available . I dont know if they have out yet spare guards for any XGT models .

I can see arguments going both ways.
On one hand, having the option of 6” out the gate only helps adoption. Especially since the 6” is the only one not available in a kit in many places.
On the other hand, some people will complain about it because Makita raised the price by like 2 dollars.

Makita are bring out a range of 150mm abrasives I believe in Australia. Pfred and flexovit sell 150mm 1.6mm 150mm cut of wheels in Australia but min order is 25. They are about double the price of 125mm cut off wheels. It’s hard to find 150mm grinding and cutting wheels in on the shelf in Australia too.

I welded up a spare guard to fit 7" on my 5" 18v Makita grinder and it works great.

and since de 18v makita have a slower speed it's perfectly safe to use bigger discs. 8500rpm. The great about the grinders with variable speed is to be able to use bigger discs. Not a great performance but some times we need the extra inches of the bigger discs

Here in the US 6" are no problem to get. Even on the spot right in store. With dewalt even the flexvolt dcg414 is a 6" while for you its a 5". Then the flexvolt dcg418 is also a 6". Dewalt has now announced over here a flexvolt 7" grinder which seems identical to the dcg418 but claims 30% more torque. NOT MORE POWER. Jus torque. 9000 rpm and 2300 watts out for the 418 and the new 1 is i think 6500 rpm but still 2300 watts out. So it seems to jus be same motor and gear reduction for lower speed and more torque

  • @wippip
    @wippip 2 года назад +3

So, just get the 5” one and get a 6” guard along with it.

"I don't have any 6" grinding discs". That's exactly the reason no one uses 6" grinders. No one ever has 6" discs. I still struggle to find a good range of 7" in the UK so I just stick to 125mm and 9". Discs readily available everywhere.

6 "cutting discs are easy to get in my country, but a 40V Makita vacuum cleaner is still impossible to obtain.

they should just sell the 6 inch guard at that point or give your both guards when you buy the grinder like dewalt and other brands

Here in the states I have the 40v 6in version. Everyone I’ve ever known and worked with has always used 6in grinders. A 7in is a little bit and a 9in is just dumb I’d rather use a cut off saw. But nice video. Love my 6in grinder just think the guard is overly big and didn’t need to be as deep as it is.

HK ex UK colony, sticking to 4" due to less torque reaction

Also stateside, I’m the only person I know that uses a 6” grinder.
And 6” grinders don’t have great local availability here, local blade options is also pretty limited.
Whereas 4.5, 5, and 7” are all abundant

been using 7" disks on my milwuakee 5" fuel grinder for an age now, i got crates of 7" and 9" dewalt disks for 1$ a piece.. so im not going to be paying 3$+ for a 5" disk when i have 1$ 7" disks that do atleast twice the work of the 5".. should make a custom guard for it but ive yet to have an issue im pretty careful with the thing and im skilled with using a grinder, havent had a disk bind up or shatter on my in years.. when i first picked a grinder up almost every disk would die a death of 1000 splinter pieces wild binding up in the cut
an as youve tested even under no load the milwuakee does what 7500 rpms or so which is fine for a 7" disk.. i would put it on my corded grinders that do 11,000 rpms thats for sure
im in canada and 4.5" and 5" are most common, alot of places will also carry 7"... 6" and 9" are hard to find but not impossible if you look around locally long enough someone will have them, can order them online obviously, but most welding supply shops where youd get your gas bottles exchanged will have every size, typically in Walter brand.. expensive disks they do outlast every box store disk but at 10x the price theyre hardly comparable on cost per cut
