I like how all the teaching pros all but deny people play golf left handed. The right shoulder should be the rear/ back shoulder Right and left shouldn't be in the teaching vocabulary
Accidentally came across your channel and really like the teaching techniques in your videos. I have a Kinesiology degree and the way you apply muscle/mechanical movement to the swing makes it easy to understand. Your instruction is light years ahead of others.
0:28 Thanks for those three different explanations of the downswing. Excellent advice and so much easier to understand than other videos that i have watched. Keep up the good work .
OMG! I can't believe I've wasted so much time (25+ yrs) chasing and trying to desperately fashion a functioning / respectable golf swing. Teachers/lessons, books, videos...blah...blah. Fruitless! Your '3 Feels' - especially getting the right elbow _in front_ of the downswing, which also naturally _flattens_ the club was, for me, the holy grail of proper swing technique. I'm in my 70s' and I can honestly say I'm hitting all clubs further, straighter and with more confidence than I _ever_ did in my 30s'. Thank you for this eye opening 9 min. lesson. Feel like I should have paid for this content. LOL!
Thank you so much for your comment! It really makes me happy to see that all the hard work over the past 20+ years has paid off when reading this. Playing golf is hard enough, so I try to make learning it a bit easier. Please like, subscribe, and share my channel so that as many people as possible can get value out of it. Feedback like yours keeps me going :)
This is the first time I’ve heard a good explanation of “shallowing the golf swing”. A lot of people talk about it, but with your demonstration and three “feels” it finally makes sense. This is something I can work with. Enjoy your channel!
This video puts you on my subscribe list❤ Working on exactly this with my pro but you provide new options for getting the right feel. For driver I try to feel the head slamming into the ground behind my back foot while keeping back to target, then trust the turn. Corresponds to your 3rd feel. Hard to move path to inside from years coming from the outside, but your cues help. Thx!
Hey there and thanks so much for subscribing! Love that my feels are giving you more options, thats what its all about. Good golf is all about being creative!
Thanks Carolin for your advice. I am a 72 year old Italian golfer and I started playing only two years ago so I am hungry for advice. Yours are really useful for me, starting with the drills to do in the hallway at home. 😀 But these on youtube with Italian subtitles are really essential together with those of my coach. You are absolutely right when you say that coaches often talk about the same things differently: some get through, some don't. I will continue to follow you. Sorry for my English and thanks again.
Coach Carolin, very nice tips , great job. Shalow or steep , both are relative to the swing of the player, nothing is bad, what is more important is getting the right arm in the best back swing position as per your swing, the correct hinge with your right wrist or an effective hinge and then the most important move , is away from the target and down your right leg first. This all have to understand, this will automatically shalow out the swing and get the club sequencing correctly. Then into impact and turn. To put it objectively.... 1. Wrist hinge - early or at the top - find out which is more effective - at top is better. 2. Back swing at the top - right arm and elbow structure. 3. First move from top - away from tgt, right shoulder away from ear and down 4. Right elbow coming down to waist - club shaft move down straight down right leg - v v imp - holy grail. 5. Turn through the ball 6. Finish high over left shoulder. Happy golfing. Doesn't matter how swing looks. These 6 moves in the sequence listed and you will flush the ball , the best yet. Cheers all .
Superb and simplified explanation of the dreaded transition move. So correct to say it needs to feel excessively exaggerated so muscle memory can get the move being close to correct. A move I have struggled with and I think excessive speed does not help me. So difficult to change. Many thanks Coach C. Leo
Hi Carolin, for me this video is the absolute "Jewel in the Crown" - auf Deutsche, ausgezeichnet! Wonderfully clear, prescriptive and --- on the range with a little perseverance it works too! You are the best coach I've seen on RUclips, please continue with these excellent videos and drills KR, John, aged 74 and living near Brighton UK Such a pity you do not have face to face lessons in the UK!
Thank You coach Carolin. That little sequence on the transition from back swing to down swing is amazing. I have active and fast hips and it does tend to get my swing out of the plain but for some reason I am able to get the club head back to square but definitely there is a power drain. Allowing the elbow to get down in that tucking in position first and then clear the hips removes all those feeling of a blocked swing. Its a much better feeling that both upper body and lower body are in sequence and at the right positions at impact with no power drain. It now just matter of muscle memory.
Carolin, I loved this entire video! I kinda like right elbow to right hip pocket feel. Like I am pulling on the golf club handle towards the ball target line while keeping my back towards the target. I really hit it solid doing that.....even my long irons. Many instructors say not to pull the handle but I think that feel for me is an absolute must! Do you know why instructors would say to not do that??? Thanks for the awesome instruction!!!
Reading all the great comments. You’re clearly a great teacher. All three of those feels are helpful to me. It’s wonderful that that you like helping others so much😊
Great video and definitely one of the better ones on this topic that many should watch. A possible next follow-up topic is why it seems so much harder to shallow longer irons, woods, driver than wedges and scoring irons.
Bingo…. Tip #3 was a light going on. I have always been taught arms, shoulders, hips on the back swing and hips, shoulders, arms on the down swing. I was holding my arms back way too long. Getting my arms dropping at the start of my down swing got me on plane with really good tempo and powerful swing. Thank you for turning that light on… 💡
I'm currently working on this with some good success. But, you really need a camera to show you what you're doing. I liked your explanations and the three different methods. Thanks, I will try them all.
Great explanation of this swing concept. Words match demonstrations. Plus easy to follow drills and feels. Btw - love your shorts as well. I like to see one little thing explained at a time in less than a minute. Helps to keep focus.
Excellent! All three are good practice positions to focus on. Yes, struggle with too steep. I have found , for me, trying to keep the back toward the target at the start (#3) gives me a feel that works. Will work all three today at the range. Thank You!
An excellent video. Ive been struggling with coming over the top for some time. I like the first point the most, about the right shoulder dropping down, but the other suggestions are good to know too.
Thank you very much for this great lesson... My really big problem is the transition and in the past I tried it with the 2 last thoughts you mentioned (tuck elbow in and keep back to target). First led me to "oversteering" and feeling stuck with the arms, the second to severe timing issues because this lead me to a more "conscious" time which obviously cannot work because the golf swing is so fast ;-) The idea with the "shoulder down" feels much more natural to me, the dry run looked good on video, I will try in the Trackman box tomorrow 🙂 Probably we as men should look much more at the playing and coaching style of woman, cause it's technically better on average and maybe more feel-oriented what helps (at least over analytical persons like me) to trigger the right pathways in the unconscious mind which should control the motion :-)
Thank you, i just subscribed, like every other golfer trying to learn we watch numerous differnt golf instructions, i really like the words you use, very easy to understand, i think the word feels are the most important word to understand in learning the golf swing, very true about what i think my swing looks like compared to reality, The first time i filmed my swing i was shocked how bad it was, i looked like Charles Barclay, ive learned to leave my EGo in the parking lot! i think the average golfer are tired of hearing about that word shollowing, ive practiced your tips just concentrating on that drill and like you said over doing it, then the key for me was blending it all , because the swing happens so fast the blend is when it all comes together, Ty again nice content!
Thank you for this excellent teaching video. When I drop my right elbow and right shoulder, is that done the same time I shift my weight to my left foot/side?
Perfect!!! 'Pulling the chain' (#3). I have gone back and forth for years -- is it going to be a clubhead-conscious day or a handle-conscious day!?? They both work but not consistently 😞
I’ve had a chance to try all three and to my amazement, one did resonate with me. Crazy good 👍 May I ask, would you consider doing a video for everyone, if one was to request? I have a problem that is next on my list and could do with one of your expert video explanations!!! Bless 🙏🏻
Hi Carolin, Your video on shallowing the club and the 3 variations!!! Loved it. In fact, I have watched it several times and each time I see something I overlooked. Okay, I live in London. I’ve been playing for 3 years and have never had any coaching. I have a problem that I would love for you to address. I’ve not seen many RUclips videos on this subject and if you could give some variations again that would be awesome!!! Okay, when I take back my driver, for the life of me, I cannot take it back above my shoulders when I swing to hit the ball. However, if I practice and take it back, I have no problems and can take it back. So, it’s not that I can’t do it, my muscle memory seems to be stuck. I think it has always been a bad habit and now I have time and want to address it !!! Any help, would be appreciated. Bless 🙏🏻 Jude
Subscribed! Basically stay a bit longer in a closed position. At the same time you want to open the hips in the downswing. For me personally I find that the conflicting part. Could you maybe address that sometime? Thanks!
Thank you for this clear lesson! One question that comes to mind, however, is that it's often stated that the "dog wags the tail" or, in other words, that the body initiates the downswing. Your lesson seems to indicate that the movement of the arms comes first. Can you clarify, please? Thank you.
Change your set up, aim your feet hips and body about 10 yards right of the target and loosen your grip pressure, then just swing, this will minimize the curve.
I liked how you repeated the movement several times with some transition involved. Old age problems yet not that old mandated a new swing 😂 so i had to find something that works. R knee r ankle are basically a solid unit. my left shoulder has been rebuilt as well along with 3 crushed vertebra in my back with limited movement sums up my laundry list of problems. So today i have a combination of moe norman - ben hogan swing combo😂😂😂 yeah it aint pretty but its working. That said i watched a few videos then subbed because you demonstrated with fluidity and transition instead of points or pose.hope that made sense.
Thanks so much for subscribing and im so glad you are enjoying the content! Also, super proud of you for mastering the game with all these limitations. You are doing amazing! If someone is restricted in their knee and ankle, I always like to recommend lightly turning the toe out at set up and keep it that way during the swing. It allows for a better turn and less restriction :) You are doing great!!!
Glad you asked for my comment, I want to point something out: To be clear, shallowing isn't the goal it's the result of the goal. It happens because good players and all pros like yourself, lead downswing with trail elbow, if any player does that, club MUST shallow as a result of leading with elbow You have the instruction correct when you point out bringing elbow to waste. Again, shallowing the club isn't the goal it's the result of the goal Hope that helps
#3. If you want the purest feel, Turn your feet/back to your target. Ball at your side. When you move the club to the ball, you will automatically feel & know exactly what it feels like. Professional golfers don't understand what amateur golfers feel and struggle with. It's so frustrating, they cannot communicate it. Erika is awesome! But if you want to "feel" the golf swing - turn your back to the target and then "swing" yo the ball. Everything will automatically be there in an instant !!! Good luck, & God bless
Simple but honest question: Why do I need to shallow the club in the down swing? That is, what impossibilities do I create that will hinder clean ball striking if I do not follow your advice?
If you dont shallow the club your Angle of attack will be too steep creating a ton of spin on certain clubs especially your long irons and woods which will cut your distance dramatically. Beyond that it promotes an out to in path, which is ok if its limited to 0 to -2 degrees but if your path exceeds that you will struggle with slice or pulls, making it hard to score consistently. hope this helps
@@coachcarolin: OUTSTANDING! thank you for honestly answering my question. I not only need to know what to do, I need to know why and what are the consequences if I don’t follow your advice🙏🏽🫡
Are you consciously thinking about external rotation of the shoulder or does it happen natural , why do I have to consciously think about that , and os it a byproduct of an incorrect backswing that doesn't allow it yo happen naturally
It really depends on the golfer, and yes it can have to do with an incorrect back swing or top position. Every golfer has a stronger side of the body and that can also impact how someone swings it back and through. these feel will help the vast majority of golfer though because they do work on improving the back and down swing transition move.
I get steep. I think the biggest culprit for me is not letting the right arm straightened in the downswing and there really isn't any videos on RUclips that talk about that.
matt wolff's backswing and start of downswing perfectly exemplifies what you are portraying here.... especially the elbow tuck......ruclips.net/video/TZtd6JZuxpw/видео.html
I’m #3! early rotation. can u dedicate another video to that “passive” at the start of the downswing? Jack Nicklaus’ sketch artist showed this by using the same shading at the end of the back and start of the down. it’s not hard to visualize but DAMN it’s hard for me to do consistently! Since the motion is fluid (i’m not pausing like Hideki!) can u help with thoughts and feels in this critical part of the swing. I need some cadence thoughts!
All these coaches are terrible. You are throwing shotput. Try to hold palm flat as much as early swing with super light grip and feel the club. Longer you hold the hand falls instead of rotating... Most people think people are hitting with hands. Hands play no part in swing. its delicate dance. Goal is tilt shoulder. Only way possible is palm look at sky and in order to bring flat ...shoulder has to go along with right palm What we all want is stable repeatable swing and swing thought One man swing thought will never work for another. its the main reason people stand in front of ball , they have many thoughts and not organzied. So if you gona teach golf , Teach single thought system
@@coachcarolin Sergio garcia has ugly shiet swing Take good example of Linn grant or cameron champ Perfect swing is holy grail. Even best players shank but they hit so many balls to groove their swing. Also swing thoughts depends one each person body shape. Here is one problem with golf coaching. You cant speak truth. You pick one moment in golf swing and analyze to eternity but it has no value Imagine you told all the hacker like rick shiel who has 2.5million and still being hacker. Some can do wonder with truth . I mean mainly korean girls. They are making army of golfers. Men are lazy. There is not many obsessed because you need distance. Core Speed is very hard to get. You need flexible body and minimum 6 feet tall to gain speed. So people are in different brackets. But every hacker wants to hit straight. So they want to know why they slice. its not that they dont know. They all know why. Its just that they dont have a solution work for their body. So here is idea. Use tools. Also copy cat video of wannagolf1633. he make great videos that people can understand Goodluck. I just browse golf swing videos and your video came ...so i just comment. Its all good. We humans are not in business of telling truth. Self sabotage is not allowed even you worked out what makes golf swing Every one knows but make body to listen is whole different thing
You said the purpose of the lesson was, to explain to the viewer the importance of shallowing the club… then you immediately went into describing three feels that golfers can try that will potentially help them shallow their club but you didn’t achieve the purpose of the lesson as stated.
This might honestly be the simplest and most effective explanation and demonstration of the golf swing that I have seen.
Amazing! I love the simple tips, this game is complicated enough already!
I agree, 2nd time listening to this lesson, a valuable 9 minutes
I like how all the teaching pros all but deny people play golf left handed. The right shoulder should be the rear/ back shoulder
Right and left shouldn't be in the teaching vocabulary
I’m not comfortable with a lesson that doesn’t come to us from her hallway.
Great work. Thanks, Coach!

Great video. The 3rd feel with dropping elbow in the downswing before chest starts to rotate really makes sense to me.
The Rory move.
I just started watching you, but you are one of the top golf instructors on RUclips! You are a natural teacher!
Thanks SO much! I love what I do and im so glad its helpful and resonating!
Coach Carolin, you are the best. Thank you so much for all your videos. You are always spot on.
these are some things we can all do easily and i'm gonna work on it, thnx.

Hi Carolin, for me this video is the absolute "Jewel in the Crown" - auf Deutsche, ausgezeichnet!
Wonderfully clear, prescriptive and --- on the range with a little perseverance it works too!
You are the best coach I've seen on RUclips, please continue with these excellent videos and drills

Such a pity you do not have face to face lessons in the UK!
Wow, thank you for all the kind words! I’m so glad you are enjoying it and it’s helpful! Best wishes to the UK!
Thank You coach Carolin. That little sequence on the transition from back swing to down swing is amazing. Simple again, back in my younger days,I was a flight instructor. I always keep in simple and safe. Love your videos!
Nice! Very clear.
Reading all the great comments. You’re clearly a great teacher. All three of those feels are helpful to me. It’s wonderful that that you like helping others so much😊
Finally, a good explanation of shallowing the club, well done.
Great video and definitely one of the better ones on this topic that many should watch. A possible next follow-up topic is why it seems so much harder to shallow longer irons, woods, driver than wedges and scoring irons.
Interesting! Yes I can certainly talk about that!
Thé 3rd solution, with the big muscles, looks for me the best.
Wonderful, thank you! Elbow in the pocket❤
So good. Thank you for the insights
I will try out your tips tomorrow at the range. Thanks ❤🙏
Love your coaching style. Subscribed!
Glad you like it! Stay tuned for more
Bingo…. Tip #3 was a light going on. I have always been taught arms, shoulders, hips on the back swing and hips, shoulders, arms on the down swing. I was holding my arms back way too long. Getting my arms dropping at the start of my down swing got me on plane with really good tempo and powerful swing. Thank you for turning that light on… 💡
Any time my friend!
Wow. That was probably the best explanation I've heard about swallowing the club. Thank you
You are so welcome!
Super Advice!!! 👍👍👍🙏
I liked the last part the most. ❤
I'm currently working on this with some good success. But, you really need a camera to show you what you're doing. I liked your explanations and the three different methods. Thanks, I will try them all.
More great content Coach Carolin! Gold!
Great explanation of this swing concept. Words match demonstrations. Plus easy to follow drills and feels. Btw - love your shorts as well. I like to see one little thing explained at a time in less than a minute. Helps to keep focus.
You damn good, a great teacher not just a coach. Heading to the range thanks dearie.
Great Advice rotation tips
Thanks coach. Love your tips
Excellent! All three are good practice positions to focus on. Yes, struggle with too steep. I have found , for me, trying to keep the back toward the target at the start (#3) gives me a feel that works. Will work all three today at the range. Thank You!
You are so welcome Steve! Would love to hear how it goes
An excellent video. Ive been struggling with coming over the top for some time.
I like the first point the most, about the right shoulder dropping down, but the other suggestions are good to know too.
真棒!簡言之,有偈為證:雙獅逆滾後手墜,持續向背萬力飛。感謝教練的分享!😍
Great swing thoughts. This is exactly what I needed to work on.
Amazing! let me know which one if the three feels you like best!
Excellent clearly demonstrated lesson! Happy to subscribe .Thanks
Thanks so much for subscribing! Welcome to the Family!
Thank you very much for this great lesson... My really big problem is the transition and in the past I tried it with the 2 last thoughts you mentioned (tuck elbow in and keep back to target). First led me to "oversteering" and feeling stuck with the arms, the second to severe timing issues because this lead me to a more "conscious" time which obviously cannot work because the golf swing is so fast ;-)
The idea with the "shoulder down" feels much more natural to me, the dry run looked good on video, I will try in the Trackman box tomorrow 🙂
Probably we as men should look much more at the playing and coaching style of woman, cause it's technically better on average and maybe more feel-oriented what helps (at least over analytical persons like me) to trigger the right pathways in the unconscious mind which should control the motion :-)
Thanks great ideas !
very clear and helpful tip. Thanks

Good teaching. thanks. ^_^
Excellent video thank you.
Thank you for this excellent teaching video. When I drop my right elbow and right shoulder, is that done the same time I shift my weight to my left foot/side?
Yes that’s a good question any thoughts Carolin
Absolutely "striped it this weekend"... wow.. right shoulder away from right ear!
Great vid, this has explained what I’ve been previously taught without any explanation as to what it did and the importance. Like others subscribed.
Great instruction. Subscribed. .Number 3 for me.
Awesome, thank you!
Perfect!!! 'Pulling the chain' (#3). I have gone back and forth for years -- is it going to be a clubhead-conscious day or a handle-conscious day!?? They both work but not consistently 😞
First of your vids I've seen, subscribed.
Thanks so much for subscribing! Welcome to the Family!

But if you want to "feel" the golf swing - turn your back to the target and then "swing" yo the ball.
Everything will automatically be there in an instant !!!
Good luck, & God bless
I do the third tip-- and even picture myself at the top trying to impersonate the pause of Cameron Young.
Great to hear! Whatever works best for you :D
Hi Coach,
Lots of explanation. It would be nice to see you EXPLAIN and Demonstrate and take swing
Will do
Simple but honest question. Why do I need to shallow the club in the downswing?
useful
is there an explanation on how you should shift your weight to the left side?
Not in this video but will make sure to shoot a video on weight shift asap!
👏👏
👏👏👏😍
My problem is,,, I'm not hitting the center of the face, like I used to.
I’m #3! early rotation. can u dedicate another video to that “passive” at the start of the downswing? Jack Nicklaus’ sketch artist showed this by using the same shading at the end of the back and start of the down. it’s not hard to visualize but DAMN it’s hard for me to do consistently! Since the motion is fluid (i’m not pausing like Hideki!) can u help with thoughts and feels in this critical part of the swing. I need some cadence thoughts!
👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏
I love her.
Goood👍
I don't like the chain image.
Please supply me with another one.
Ok, but, I don't understand why it's necessary to shallow the club in the first place? Why not make it simple and just take it back already shallowed?
because your body will overcompensate and come down too steep if you do this. Golf is a game of opposites!
Great "feel" explanation. Appreciate your tips!
Just do what she says for training, this is the way to think but it’s not everything. Good first step, get to work.
Only way possible is palm look at sky and in order to bring flat ...shoulder has to go along with right palm
What we all want is stable repeatable swing and swing thought
One man swing thought will never work for another. its the main reason people stand in front of ball , they have many thoughts and not organzied.
So if you gona teach golf , Teach single thought system
I feel like at this point you should start your own channel 😂🙏🏻
@@coachcarolin Sergio garcia has ugly shiet swing
Take good example of Linn grant or cameron champ
Perfect swing is holy grail. Even best players shank but they hit so many balls to groove their swing.
Also swing thoughts depends one each person body shape.
Here is one problem with golf coaching. You cant speak truth.
You pick one moment in golf swing and analyze to eternity but it has no value
Imagine you told all the hacker like rick shiel who has 2.5million and still being hacker.
Use tools. Also copy cat video of wannagolf1633. he make great videos that people can understand
Goodluck. I just browse golf swing videos and your video came ...so i just comment.
Its all good. We humans are not in business of telling truth. Self sabotage is not allowed even you worked out what makes golf swing
Every one knows but make body to listen is whole different thing
You’re good. You talk too much, too fast, not leaving space for thoughts, but you’re good 👍
🤝🙏🙏🙏
You said the purpose of the lesson was, to explain to the viewer the importance of shallowing the club… then you immediately went into describing three feels that golfers can try that will potentially help them shallow their club but you didn’t achieve the purpose of the lesson as stated.
