I'd really enjoy to hear you thoughts on us if you have. However, if you haven't I completely understand. I feel we get overlooked quite often because we are super rural but that seems to be our blessing and curse. Though we like the ruralness, the quite, and lack of people. We kinda have a joke, 'Welcome to Montana, leave your money and go.' That is not to say we don't like people, but it seems that other people want us to be more modern but we like the way we are and visitors seem to like it as well. We tend to be a mix from all over the states. We tend to enjoy outdoor activities. Also, my father passed about 3 years ago this Thanksgiving and had a deep love for Scotland, though he never got the chance to see it. (He bought a kilt, and even wore it pretty regularly around the house.) He loved the pipes as well. So, I enjoy learning about the nation he loved so deeply. Lovely lodge. Great architecture. BUT.. the decor is awful.. gaudy, tacky and way overdone. Such a beautiful home should get the "less is more" treatment and let the beauty of the home and the gorgeous vitas take center stage.
That's not a closet, it's the entrance to the Attic space. Lol, You're on the wrong continent to encounter a Jackal. Ah yes, the Moon and Venus below it! Peace, Love and Light my friend!!!
Was just gonna write this. I think he means a coyote? I love how excited he is with everything! Hopefully we get to see a bit of the Outlander festival.
Shaun!! These are MY mountains, I live in the Blue Ridge/Appalachian Range on the East Tennessee side. THIS is why my great-Nan said she came here with her two older brothers and her parents as a little girl, they left their village of Drumnadrochit, not too far from Inverness and they moved first to North Carolina, and then settled in East Tennessee. She (whose name was Isla) lived to be 102 years old (my grandfather, her oldest son, was 94 when he passed and my own father is 83 at present) is who told us all the stories of where we came from, who we all got our love of cooking and baking from, of gardening, canning and preserving, singing/playing our instruments after a large family meal. Urguhart Castle is somewhere I long to go, as we've been told that my great-great-great grandfather was the Ghillie at Urguhart!! I didn't mean to write a book here, but I had to tell you just what your Scotland vlogs mean to me... they give me insight into my own roots. I also have a great appreciation of these homes built here in the mountains as my own grandfather was a carpenter - he logged, timbered and built homes and furniture, just as HIS father and grandfather did. But he was also a farmer (he had cattle, chickens, hogs, horses and many other animals as well as fields of corn, tobacco, potatoes, and many other vegetables but he also maintained the orchards that HIS father cultivated before him) and he was an accomplished musician. He taught me to play the fiddle and to harmonize with my Aunties and could sing songs that cut you to your soul. My OWN youngest granddaughter has our family's "little throwback gene" and she's the sweetest little ginger headed lassie you've ever set your eyes upon. May I just say that I love your admiration of these beautiful mountains that I call home, and that I admire and long to explore the mountains of Scotland that YOU call home! Cheers!!!! ~ Jan
I'm glad you made it! I used to work for a company that cleaned these kinds of rental homes all over western NC. They all seem to have some kind of random animal theme too, usually black bear. (We don't have moose in NC, closest would be elk and deer.) I hope you got to see the autumn colors during your stay! I love the Blue Ridge mountains, my home.
That cabin is unbelievable!! North Carolina is an absolutely beautiful state and the people there are so friendly and polite! The beauty of those mountains overwhelm me when I see them.
Two amazing aspects of my chosen home state of NC: amazing mountains and gorgeous beaches. Now that you have been dazzled by the Blue Ridge Mountains it is time to mosey over to the Outer Banks for the beaches. A future trip you will be glad you made. Welcome to North Carolina!!
Yes, he does need to see the Outer Banks gorgeous area my son lives there and I make a point of driving down a couple times a year. Besides my mountains coastal North Carolina has my heart. He'd get a kick out of the beach houses I think they're every bit as nice as the cabin just a different look all pastel colors.
I'm from the eastern part of North Carolina, New Bern to be exact. Native North Carolinian born and raised! I'm proud of my home state and thrilled that you visited the mountains. You should definitely try the Highland Games sometime and absolutely get yourself out to the Outer Banks to see the lighthouses and the wild ponies of the OBX (short for Outer Banks). The leaf like insect is a katydid, completely harmless. Love the view of the sunset and the Moon from the deck of the cabin! We have a bit of topography for everyone here, flatlands in the eastern part, Piedmont in the central region and mountains in the western region. You're definitely going to have to try NC BBQ, eastern Carolina style with hot pepper and vinegar based sauce (my favorite) or western Carolina style with red sauce. We're a state divided on what's "real" Carolina BBQ. Hoping you get to visit NC again soon! Love the Scottish brogue!
Thank you for reminding me how incredibly beautiful and abundant the nature is here and how lucky we are to get to live in it. Much love here for you.🥰
Log cabins are awesome. They're in every state, just with their own local history and decor from locally with a unique meaning. Also, I'm dying laughing when you're on the porch. Looking around at every sound like you're about to be eaten by something lol Love it bud, keep up the work and enjoy your trip!
I live in NC and we love the crickets (making that night noise)! Love how surprised you are at everything!🤣🤣 The green thing looked like our common grasshoppers and I think you’re saying something about “sting bugs” but those would be wasps or hornets. They don’t usually bother you unless they’re provoked! Hope you enjoy our mountains! My favorite place in the world!❤️❤️
Welcome to my home state!!! In our “highlands”, we owe our culture, dialect and our way of life to the Scottish and Irish immigrants who came before us. I hope you feel welcomed and at home in North Carolina!
Thanks for the tour of the log cabin, it looks amazing!! Very beautiful place. I'm glad you got to stay in N. Carolina a decent amount of time too, cause there's so much to see there. Look forward to your next vlog! 😎👍
Ah yes! Nothing beats my mountains. Born and raised in Boone. I'm lucky enough to live in my own log cabin in the woods and I love the sounds at night. The best is to hear an owl or see a doe with her fawns at sunrise.Enjoy the clean smelling fresh air and celebrate your heritage! I know you are proud because we have Scottish blood in our family and say it with pride. Blessings to one and all!
Welcome to NC! And to the south. Yall have good time. Get you some good NC style BBQ. Fried Chicken and those home style buttermilk biscuits. Good eating! What a beautiful state. I feel like its home. I'm in Virginia with family in NC. Go to Hatteras every year!. Welcome come to Virginia for a quick visit! See where it all started at Jamestown.
I live just a few miles from that log cabin. We who live in NC take for granted the beauty and animals here . We are so use to seeing and hearing the things you describe.
I live in the Low country of South Carolina by the beach but whenever I get a chance I go to the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina So beautiful! Sometimes the mountains call
Last year as a storm (the ragged edge of a hurricane, to be specific) was moving in, here in the midlands of South Carolina, I was safe at home and my car was in the garage, but with the garage door up in case we lost power. I went out to the garage to watch the storm, kinda outside but dry and without worrying about a tree limb falling on my head. And I see a praying mantis sitting on my car doing the same thing. So for about twenty minutes we both just watched the storm together, neither bothering the other.
So glad you are getting to experience the Appalachian Mountains I live in East Kentucky and I am very proud of all the mountain states we a a unique bunch ( probably because of the Scottish heritage) have fun and keep the wonderful vlogs up
Thank you so much for the tour of the lodge. It is amazing. My dad's people are from NC. I love visiting the state. You gotta try the food. It is awesome! Enjoy the festival. I look forward to your vlogs.
The lodge is beautiful. Thanks for sharing your adventures. As someone mentioned in another comment, the best mosquito repellent is Deep Woods Off. It smells strong, but works well. Hope you and Teka have lots of fun!
Welcome to NC. Land of wild things and beautiful sunrise and sunsets. Hope you enjoyed your visit, since this was probably filmed months ago from the looks of everything.

Oh Rebekah, Scotland is magical! I spent 3 weeks there. More sheep than people. Be careful driving. It’s so beautiful there, you could easily drive off the road from looking.
Wait until you hear a "lady of the night" Shaun. Harmless since it's just a female Fox in heat, but her cries will chill your bones if you don't know what's making the sound. I know and it still gives me chicken skin.
Shaun the bugs are attracted to your white light if you could get a yellow light then they wouldn't bother you so much. I've driven through the Blue Ridge Mountains four times. It was scary to do but so beautiful also! That Lodge looks incredible! Have fun! 💙 from Boston
I love hearing how much you're enjoying yourself! I'm addicted to your vids! I'm American and have been living in the UK for 11 years and I still can't get over how people don't build houses with closets... It's insane. "But you can always buy a wardrobe!" No, I can't. It takes up square footage in what little room I have and is expensive, lol! I only have a tiny Harry Potter closet 😩
What an AMAZING place!! Love the way the branches are integrated into the railings. Looks like the perfect place to ride out the apocalypse. Nice & isolated.
At around 1250 you’re hearing Cicadas. They lull me to sleep at night when it is cool enough for open windows. I love seeing areas I am familiar through your eyes, Shaun. So happy you’re enjoying the U.S.
Welcome to NC! My ancestors settled here from Scotland because they said our Blue Ridge Mountains reminded them of the highlands of home. I love that our Scottish heritage is so celebrated here. I hope you have an amazing time!
Love that you are concerned for your safety over what are the sounds of frogs and insects. I live in Wisconsin. For us those are comfort music. It means we have made it through another winter. We open the windows and enjoy the sound. Great way to lull yourself to sleep.
The reason the Blue Ridge Mountains and Smoky Mountains are on the smaller side is because they're older than the Rocky Mountains and have been weathered by nature for so long. Not trying to be rude or anything, just a nice little tidbit of knowledge for you. 😃
I miss North Carolina. Lived there many times. Thanks, Shaun, for the tour. NC and the Blue Ridge Mtns are pretty special. Welcome to America, have an awesome time.
Shaun, you have captured our North Carolina wilderness so wonderfully and Bliss Mountain is all that you say!! We were so happy to have you and Teka join us this year at Fraser's Ridge Homecoming 2019. Can't wait for the rest of your videos!!
EAT NORTH CAROLINA BARBECUE!!! Start with baby back ribs. Then pulled pork. Baby back ribs first, though. Those are the choice item. You have to try them. You have not fully experienced your time in the 'States, until you have had an adequate try for some properly-prepared southern barbecue. I'm not even from North Carolina, I'm from Kentucky, but I am a Southerner, so I can speak about barbecue. If you're going to come to America, and know what we are about. You've had a good early education in New Orleans, they're good and amazing with food and drinks, but when you're deep in the South, you need to sample the food. WHEN DO WE GET TO SEE SHAUN TRY BABY-BACK RIBS?!? :D :D :D
@Shaun, welcome to our neck of the woods. I'm in the Blue Ridge Mountains right across the border in Virginia. That "Bliss Mountain Lodge" is quite over the top compared to most of our more modest mountain homes, but it sure looks like a damn nice (albeit exotic) weekend getaway! Good to see you so close and sampling our lifestyle... we were born of Scotch-Irish settlers, and we all love and value our heritage and homes here. THIS is life as intended. Also, don't fret about our bears, they are black bears and they are generally always hungry and always avoid human confrontation... the brown bears are the ones to fear. The sounds you hear are mostly Cicada singing, some people call them tree frogs but it's mostly our Cicada songs really. We have black bear, whitetail deer, red and grey foxes, and some of the most beautiful birds of prey you'll ever see. We know how to cook & eat better than most, we love shindigs with family & friends, and we love our mountain living. Hope you got to eat plenty of OUR food while you were here and enjoy our fine corn liquor and whiskeys. Yall come back now, ya hea?!
I grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains near where this was filmed and am so homesick. Hate I missed you in Charlotte. I’d have drove you to the mountains to avoid the trip by plane as the foothills heading to the mountains is stunning.
I live right in the blue ridge mountains and you don’t have to worry about wolfs 😂 black bears , coyotes , and mountain lions yes they are in fact in the blue ridge
So glad you get to see first hand the pride we Carolinians have for our Scottish heritage. Your excitement and happiness is so cute! (Barra Macneil, not Colonsay lol)
Beautiful log house for sure. There is nothing like being out in nature, where I live we go camping a lot, its so peaceful . Have a great time Shaun :o)

Every September we used to be overrun with Asian Beetles (aka more brownish Lady Bugs that bite) I haven't seen them in a couple years. I wonder what happened to them.
@@Bob-jm8kl They all moved to Minneapolis. We have had them for several years snd they are so annoying. We also have stink bugs. Saw one the other day. I live right in the city with blocks, city streets and sidewalks. The wildlife has moved in now. So far this year, I've had a mama raccoon with 6 of her almost grown kits on my back porch, a possum on the front porch and a wild turkey walk through my yard. We see them walking down the sidewalk and I've had to wait while they crossed the street. A few blocks away, a coyote was spotted by several people but I've not seen him. Deer are around as well and occasionally, a cougar meanders through a nearby suburb on the way to Wisconsin. Red Tailed Hawks perch on my railing on my front steps and eagles and great blue herons fly overheard as the rookery is about a mile away. There are about 68-75 bald eagle nests right here in the city---some are in people's back yards. Never saw this much wildlife as a child. Who needs to go to the country? Only if you want to see bears. Then, one has to drive up north or to western WI.
I grew up about a mile down the road from Leatherwood, and miss that place everyday. As a kid I could not wait to leave, now I would bring my kids back in a heartbeat! I spent a lot of day, and nights playing in those hill. Cool cave across Elk Creek, directly in front of Leatherwood.

Aah.. he's gotta come to the eastern part of the state to taste the REAL Carolina barbecue 😉
Mine as well I'm live in Franklin NC .
@@cliftneysterling4105 I live about an hour from you. My parents worked at Angel Medical for years.
@@brandi_with_an_i that's cool all my boy's were born there. We lived in sylva for a few years. But I happy to be home. M y husband does construction in Waynesville and Maggie valley. So we are over that way a lot.
I love the music you chose for your video!
Yes
B Bunch I had to look it up - it caught my attention too! It's called Ghosts of the Rail by Gavin Luke! Pure sweetness!
Erika M, thanks for the info. (I absolutely love the music too.)
@@erikam8621 Thank you for telling us the title! :) I was trying to find it through soundhound but it wouldn't work for me.
I am fortunate enough to call the NC mountains my home. It is truly spectacular.
The night noises in the South are lovely. I'm happy to see your reaction and glad you shared it with the world. =)
That was a spectacular sunset. That lodge looks like something I used to see on HGTV. My Architecture heart is aglow. Have fun and thank you for sharing!
ElcsieRetakov such a cool place to stay
Lovely lodge. Great architecture. BUT.. the decor is awful.. gaudy, tacky and way overdone. Such a beautiful home should get the "less is more" treatment and let the beauty of the home and the gorgeous vitas take center stage.
Shaun, You were in my neck of the woods. I'm on the middle of SC. Lots of Scottish Irish descendents from the Blue Ridge (Smokey Mountains) on down.
The background hum is the cicadas. The occasional raspy chirp is tree and ground frogs.
I wouldn't worry about the bears, I'd worry about the raccoons! Those little s#!ts get into everything! 🦝
Snakes is what he should avoid
lol
So true. Lol
Should worry the most about Bigfoot!

Crickets, cicadas, frogs, oh my! Sounds of home. I live in the foothills of those mountains. So glad you got to experience our nature!
Your happiness in visiting our nation does my heart good.Come as often as you're able and stay as long as you please Shaun.Welcome!
Shaun, you are Avery incredible person. Thank you for loving our country. God Bless you
Thank you 😊💜💜💜
who's Avery?? :)
Hopefully we get to see a bit of the Outlander festival.
coyote
You should see the views in the Autumn. It is a rainbow of color. You are hearing crickets, one of my favorite sounds on a summer evening.
Also, your music choices are always so fabulous, and this one I especially like. Excellent vlog, thanks Shaun.
Welcome to the Carolinas. So happy to see you in our region. Looking forward to following your videos.
It looks so green and beautiful out there. Thanks for bringing us along Shaun.
I visited the Outer Banks this past May. Gorgeous indeed!
My favorite place in the world!❤️❤️
Have a great time in the states and our huge porches and closets. I love your enthusiasm of our country. It’s so cute to see it from a foreigners POV
Welcome to North Carolina, glad your loving it! HAVE some good fun!!!
I love the Blue Ridge mountains and that is a beautiful home
Several types of crickets, and katydids, are the majority of what the sounds are.
The things I take for granted...living in NOLA and summering in other parts of the American South. I am so glad you are enjoying yourself!
My home! I've lived in a cabin in Blue Ridge, NC my whole life. My tiny town was actually founded by 2 Scottish men!
I really love your channel. No matter where you go and what you see your always so kind. I do love seeing other people enjoy America. We take a lot of heat on the global stage.... but we ain’t all that bad... just LOUD!!!
You make me want to visit Scotland 🏴 if You rep Scotland 🙌🏼 your most excellent in doing so. Much love from Florida! Hope y’all enjoy 😊
Thank you Rebekah hope to see you in Scotland 😊
Shaun oh you will. Just not in the winter 🥶
Oh Rebekah, Scotland is magical! I spent 3 weeks there. More sheep than people. Be careful driving. It’s so beautiful there, you could easily drive off the road from looking.
CC I’m looking at vlogger footage. It looks magical. And safe! Solo female traveler.... I have to be so cautious these days! Scotland looks perfect 👌🏼
Wait until you hear a "lady of the night" Shaun. Harmless since it's just a female Fox in heat, but her cries will chill your bones if you don't know what's making the sound. I know and it still gives me chicken skin.
Wait until he here's a mountain lion, those things make the hair on my neck and arms stand up.
Shaun the bugs are attracted to your white light if you could get a yellow light then they wouldn't bother you so much. I've driven through the Blue Ridge Mountains four times. It was scary to do but so beautiful also! That Lodge looks incredible! Have fun!
💙 from Boston
No jackals in the us lol. Perhaps you meant coyotes. Because yes those are definately everywhere.
My granny grew up close by in Yadkinville. Our family owned the mountain where Wolf Laurel Ski Slopes now are. Miss them days.
You missed a great chance there with the moose... You should have said... wait for it... There's a moose loose aboot this hoose... sorry mate ;)
Lol you’re right. Damn. I’ll need to go back
David Wardle @ made me laff out loud!!!! ☺️❤️
Hahaha, Your reaction to a small taste of the "wilderness" was hilarious.
At around 1250 you’re hearing Cicadas. They lull me to sleep at night when it is cool enough for open windows. I love seeing areas I am familiar through your eyes, Shaun. So happy you’re enjoying the U.S.
Absolutely beautiful! I’m so excited for this leg of your trip and the videos!!!
Welcome to NC! My ancestors settled here from Scotland because they said our Blue Ridge Mountains reminded them of the highlands of home. I love that our Scottish heritage is so celebrated here. I hope you have an amazing time!
That's my life in Alabama. Looking at the stars are the best.
Love that you are concerned for your safety over what are the sounds of frogs and insects. I live in Wisconsin. For us those are comfort music. It means we have made it through another winter. We open the windows and enjoy the sound. Great way to lull yourself to sleep.
That is pretty. I've never seen mountains, even smaller ones like that in real life.
The reason the Blue Ridge Mountains and Smoky Mountains are on the smaller side is because they're older than the Rocky Mountains and have been weathered by nature for so long. Not trying to be rude or anything, just a nice little tidbit of knowledge for you. 😃
Haha.. love that you called it bazaar. Yet in the mountains of America a big log cabin "mansion" is a totally normal thing 😊
Ahhhh, I love to go to sleep to the sound of the summer insects. The big, bright green bug is a katydid. I heard cicadas & crickets too.
Katy I love the sound too 😊
I miss North Carolina. Lived there many times. Thanks, Shaun, for the tour. NC and the Blue Ridge Mtns are pretty special. Welcome to America, have an awesome time.
I've been looking at homes in Raleigh and now I know why so many have screened in porches. Bugs! :-)
Soooo beautiful!!! The cabin, the landscape, the sunset, the aerial footage...
Frasher's Ridge!!! We just watched that episode last night! Many of the settlers in the south where indeed Scott's. Thomas Jefferson was Scottish.
Mormon Mom cool to see the real place from the show :)
Jefferson's family was originally from Wales.
@@MrBenbaruch that lineage is sketchy. Highly debated. His mother, however, was Scottish. Not a question at all. It was to that I was referencing.
@@shaunvlog I bet! Thanks for sharing it!
No moose in NC, but we got them in CO. Use to live near Pilot Mountain in NC, now I'm by Pike's Peak, BIG difference (like nearly 13,000 ft).
Elk have been reintroduced to Western NC .
I went to North Carolina in June love it we also went on over to the beach for 2 days
Jen Jen such a cool place
So amazing and totally my vibe, wish I lived there! Have a great time Shaun (and Teka!), and thanks for the vlog :)
Jen Crecelius thank you
I grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains near where this was filmed and am so homesick.

Hi, Shaun! I'm two hours away! Your enthusiasm is the same as mine the four times I've visited Scotland! Lots of Scottish ancestors!
Stinkbugs, and yes they're a pain. Years ago is was ladybugs.
