Pecan is very similar to hickory. They are in the same family and often sold together as hickory lumber.
That being said, hickory is slightly harder and a tad bit heavier. But, pecan is desired if you want more color variation or less brittleness in your project.
Pecan prefers low land, moist, soil… hickory can grow well uplands in drier soils. As a result hickory grows slower and is more plentiful.
Whatever you use those slabs for, make sure they have a seal coat on them. An oil finish is not good on spalted wood because of the fungus. And, although you can use it in a table… a bowl turning or cutting board would not be advisable. Food contact with bare spalted wood is a No-No.
Coat the ends when you dry it to reduce splits and shakes.
    Lovely wood, pretty mom too!

@@jeffffro7674 If the kiln drying is done with adequate heat for a long enough time it can kill it… but, that’s iffy… in most systems. Most hardwoods aren’t done that way.

Spalting is created from the permeation of moisture through the log. As a chainsaw sculptor, I am always excited for the opportunity to carve pecan. It almost never disappoints. I would give anything to carve on some the big timber in y'all's stock.

Spalting is basically the beginnings of rot, it's caused by a fungus. Drying (especially in a steam injection kiln) halts that process and leaves you with those amazing patterns. Makes for very unique flooring. It's usually found in Beech and Sycamore over here in the UK. Commands a high price tag too, great looking log you have there.

Yep! It's something that happens relatively slow and the longer you let something sit, the more you get and the deeper into the heart it starts to go. The problem is mostly a guessing game! If a log sits too long, it starts to get spongy and rots too much to be used for anything at all! We have Maple as the most famous and sought after spalted wood here in the U.S. but it can happen to just about any wood. The absence of tannins helps dramatically with the process so there are of course better wood species than others for it. I used to think that density had a lot to do with it but I'm not sure anymore, I've seen it in all flavors from soft conifers to REALLY dense Hickory and Pecan like this Decidu-viddy-ous!
The more and more I learn about woods, the more and more I fall in love with trees and woodworking!!! It's just so much fun to turn trees into stuff that can give us so much beauty and practical use in our daily lives. Think for a moment about just how much trees actually give us and you can't help but be an intensely passionate tree-hugger!!!

Depending on the hardness/specie, you can cause spalting by taking a green log and bury it in sawdust, and keep the pile wet for about a year. The trick is to catch the rotting process before the wood becomes punky. I've heard that spalted wood should not be used for items to be used with food.

Among us Mississippi pecan fanatics (grew up with lots and lots of pecan trees on our farm), we are adamant that the pronunciation is puh-KAHN' -- and we kinda sneer at folks who say PEE-can (that's a container into which one urinates). Call us snobbish, but we're serious about our pecan trees and wood. Mighty glad you got to open up that log and see the beauty inside it. Maybe you'll get to stack/sticker some slabs and boards, then enjoy milling them after they've dried sufficiently. Good work!
Oh, and I'm sure you have plenty enough experience sawing logs, but one of the most important concepts to put into practice is watching out for the pith. If you can flip the log enough, you can avoid that pith altogether. Yeah, it'll leave you with a 4x4 or 6x6 timber that has the pith in the middle, but just set that baby aside and watch it crack, twist, etc. as it dries. I love hearing sawyers' stories about sawing slabs when they first began and now finding that many of those slabs that had the pith inside have now split wide open. Besides, if you are careful to avoid the pith, you can wind up with some nearly quarter sawn boards that will have really straight grain.

Spalting is a fungus working it’s way through the wood caused mostly by moisture and time, but harvesting spalted wood is a timing thing. You have a relatively small window where you can have spalted wood that still has structural integrity. After that, it’s wood rot. It will work through sapwood and exposed ends first, naturally.

I was always told the black lines is from moisture soaking in the ends because they aren’t sealed after cutting it down! Not real sure but good video!

Zo your cofinadience level on the saw mill is Worlds apart from 12 months ago. Awesome seeing you work that machine for what you want to happen! If I had one, and I do, lol, the blade engage lever was obviously made for a taller person. Your engage looks confident. Disengage always looks weak. Staright arm out. Palm and fingers straight out over the Ball. Lay the middle of you palm onto the ball, warp your fingers and pull straight back. Make that machine shut down Mom!!! (So happy for you two) Awesome team making these vids!!! Thank you!!!👍🏻👍🏻😎😎😎
