Every time I try to do something with major I very quickly end up in ether minor (aeolian mode if you music theory person) or dorian, and if there's unchangeable melody that enforces major, it clashes HARD with my internal thinking. The only exception are songs that have a somewhat vague key, like runaway and running with the wolves. For such songs my ears default me to minor instantly, so I can deal with them. Running with the wolves, for example, is vi-I-iii-V in F major, but I hear it as i-III-v-VII in D minor (D aeolian if you music theory person). TLDR: Blame my non existent skill.
It's funny that I didn't even notice that "death" back vocal line lol =) But I have to disappoint you. The chorus is the hardest section to convert into the metal. It starts with a major seventh chord - it's a type of chord that has the most mellow, calming and soft sound possible. I like her style, like her voice, like her lyrics. The only problem is that her songs are more complex than usual radio stuff and take more time and effort to cover, but it's totally my fault.

Well, Melanie songs are hard to label. They're unique, and to carry that uniqueness into another genre, said genre boundaries need to be expanded. On top of that, I yet to see a clear metal genre definition other than "I don't like it thus it's not metal". Closest I was able to find is that metal music is fast, loud, dark and aggressive. Then there's power metal that's fast and loud, but rarely dark and not exactly aggressive. And then there's bands like Otep and Slipknot, that fast, loud, dark and aggressive, but not considered to be metal because it's nu-metal. At this point I simply do not understand how to label my music.

My stuff primarily influenced by traditional heavy metal (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Accept), German power metal (Rage, Helloween), and japan power\prog metal (Demetori, Haruki Yamada, SSH). All of those genres, bands and performers have nothing in common with modern extreme metal. From wiki: "Extreme metal acts set themselves apart from traditional heavy metal acts, such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Motörhead, by incorporating more abrasive musical characteristics such as higher tempos, increased aggression and a harsher extremity."
