That my friends is nothing more than what was known in the old days as a Rotary-Converter - as used in the 1930's and 40's to run valve Public Address systems, Radio Transmitters and other tube gear in remote locations.
My former work boss used them on car race tracks for operating the PA gear he installed from 12 lead acid car batteries.
They work well - in so far as they are electrically considered bullet proof - but are about 50% efficient.
They were the early version of an Dc-Ac Inverter before transistors were invented. Many kilowatts of power could be managed using this principle.

you can make a DC to DC step-up converter using like 1IC, 3 capacitors, 2 resistors, a transistor, a coil and a diode...
This would be a lot more helpful with a parts list and a simple monologue instead of the cheesy soundtrack.

This has got to be the least efficient DC/DC converter I've ever seen. I suppose it may be interesting to someone learning about electromagnetism, but a cheap boost converter from eBay will be far more efficient and make better use of the battery. So what's the point of this project?

A simple 555 timer powering a coil, and then using the inductive spike to charge a capacitor would be a nice and simple unregulated voltage set up circuit.

WTF?! You make mechanical transformator. Its efficiency is less than simple DC DC 3V to 24 V converter. In your 20v generator current will be 20/3 + powerloss in rotating.
