    Video Introduction:
    The Maruti Suzuki 800 is a small city car manufactured by Maruti Suzuki in India from 1983 to 2014. The first generation (SS80) was based on the 1979 Suzuki Alto and had an 800 cc F8B engine, hence the moniker. Widely regarded as the most influential automobile in India, about 2.87 million 800s were produced during which 2.66 million were sold in India itself. In the 1980s and early 1990s, the name "Maruti" was synonymous with the Maruti Suzuki 800. It remained the best-selling car in India until 2004 when the Maruti Suzuki Alto took the title. It was also exported to a number of countries in South Asia including Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and was also available in Morocco and selected European markets often sold as the Suzuki Maruti. In an elaborate ceremony held in New Delhi on 14 December 1983, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi handed over keys of the very first car to Mr. Harpal Singh S/O Haridas Singh, who won the ownership rights through a lucky draw. The original 800 was based on the Suzuki Fronte SS80, but a modernized aerodynamic version using the body of the second-generation Alto (SB308) was presented in late 1986. The introduction of this car did revolutionize the automotive industry in India. Right from its inception, it was considered the first affordable people's car, the first modern-era front-wheel drive and high speed small contemporary vehicle, and the only reasonably modern car available in India, the incumbent mainstay Hindustan Ambassador and Premier Padmini being based on long-obsolete 1950s designs. The delivery was against bookings done directly with Maruti Udyog Limited (A Govt. of India undertaking). The prospective owner would then have to wait for almost three years after booking till delivery. Such extended waiting times gave rise to some people indulging in black marketing and earning premiums of as much as 40%. Cars produced during the early years were essentially Suzuki OEM components imported from Japan and merely assembled by Maruti Udyog Limited at the Gurgaon plant.
    Exports to neighboring countries commenced in 1987 and were followed by a shipment of 500 cars to Hungary, with the first car arriving on 24 October 1987. After successes there, and in spite of Suzuki's objections, Maruti Suzuki tackled more competitive markets and entered France in 1989, the Netherlands in 1990, followed by England, Malta, and Italy. In markets where Japanese cars had a quota, the 800 was sold as a Maruti, with all mention of Suzuki carefully removed - even the manuals were revised to not fall afoul of the quota requirements. The 800 continued to be sold in Italy and other Western European markets until 2004 when it could no longer be made to meet emissions and safety equipment. The Maruti Suzuki had never been equipped with seat belts until exports began, meaning that such parts originally had to be imported from Japan to be fitted to export market cars, as with everything relating to building left-hand-drive cars.

    Actually people kept buying maruti 800 even if Alto was launched. That forced Maruti to discontinue 800.
    Even if you drive those two now. 800's steering feels so perfectly weighted offering precise feedback when compared to Alto

    • @johndavidson3424

      The one you called 800 is actually an early Mk1/Mk2 Alto 0.8litre car which is based on the Fronte, typically a 796cc 4-stroke Fronte named as "Alto", it's just that those alto 800's were renamed as "Maruti 800" in India in 80's, although the renaming stopped at one time, and the Mk5 Alto(1st gen alto for India) got its rightful name in India, so Alto and 800 are just the same cars, just that they're from different generation, and one(M800 in India)is a predecessor of the other. So, talking about Indian's Maruti 800's, it technically still exists and sells but being improved and with it's new form, which is the "Alto 800".
      Edit :- I guess the Alto 800 with the old school "F8D" motor got discontinued due to the new Alto K10 in India.

    badlaav prakriti ka niyam hai. 800 ruled for 2 decades in Indian market. But everyone wants their product to be upgraded and offer something better to customer. That's what MS did. Alto offered more space, better milage and better looks. In 2004 MS was still growing and it didn't have that much capacity to manufacture both 800 and Alto.

  • @vipulpatel1167
    @vipulpatel1167 2 года назад +19

    It would be wrong to say Maruti didn't upgrade 800 with the time. Infact, introduction of Alto could be seen as a Maruti's strategy to phase out 800 eventually. If Alto was launched as 800 plus then we would have said that 800 got an update rather they chose to launch Alto while 800 was still being sold. Let's also acknowledge the fact that preference of people changes over time with the rising income and the availability of alternate global brands to choose from.

    For me it's a car of Excellence designed to thrill at every corner you drive. Nothing can match it's road presence and elegance. Head Turner forever. People never forget the roots which you come from, Maruti 800 is a symbol of perfection. It's just not a car. It's part of family. It did extremely well than what it was built for and it will continue to do so.
    Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes and all others bow towards Maruti 800. They are never a competition to such a car like Maruti 800. The one and only, undoubtedly unbeatable.
    In the future there is no car which can be ever built or born that can beat Maruti 800 because Legends never die.

    Bhai alto was launched in 2000 but 800 was still popular due which alto was not picking up sales. Due to which they stopped the production of 800.
