Hi, just wanted to confirm. Patients with affected joints will show capsular patterns as shown in the vid. So if for example patient show more restricted extension vs flexion for eg TFJ, does it mean that it is not really a joint issue and is something else? are there any examples?

@@kmlljk Hi! Great question! This is very much so a “real world vs textbook” scenario. In THEORY, if your objective finding does not demonstrate limitations in the capsular pattern, this would suggests that the primary impairment is not joint related. However, even though a person might present with a non-capsular pattern, this doesn’t completely rule out the joint being affected. You can have a portion of the joint affected (think about all the fiber orientations the shoulders joint capsule) and this may not result in a true capsular pattern. Just keep in mind that many things and PT are based on theories and we have specificity and sensitivity for a reason. Not everything is 100% absolute. Hope that answers your question!
