- Today's video covers our do's and don't to help individuals experiencing pain from an intercostal muscle strain to help them recover quicker!
We recommend getting your ribs & symptoms assessed properly by a musculoskeletal expert and GP to determine the working diagnosis as other treatments may be more appropriate and required to help initially.

Sadly I've had muscle spasms for the last 15 years. No doctor has ever been able to tell me what it's about. Just had a fellow sufferer tell me it's linked to Costochondritis. Which the pain at the strum has only been happening since September 2022 after 3rd covid. I just wish someone had told me 15 years ago. This video is great. Thank you.
I got this due to coughing during covid. Hurts like hell... if i cough it feels like someone is punching my side and if i sneeze it feels like ive been stabbed.
Just happened to me today due to sneezing like 10 times in a row...
Is this healed yet? And if so how long did it take to heal
@@OfficialJoePlays yep healed.. took about a week.
@OfficialJoePlays im currently dealing with it too . Due to staining while using the restroom
i also have this pain from last one week due to coughing from almost 3 weeks. i have mucus build as well. Everytime, i sneez or cough it hurts so much and pain moves from under right breast little to the back. Everytime i am tossing on bed it hurts. My left ear is blocked too because of music. Can anyone please suggest what i can do?
This happened to me from a chest infection. My muscles are still in agony and spasm, 3 weeks later 😢 I hope it will end soon
Strained my intercostals twice in the past year. This time it was because I have this heavy knapsack full of files and laptop and instead of using the rod to pull it on wheels I was picking it up and throwing it over my shoulder. Learned my lesson, now I use the rod and wheels. Like the directions given in these RUclips videos and plan to use them. Not sure but think something similar and not paying attention to it led to a frozen should about 8 years ago that lasted about 8 months. Very good directions here.
Thanks for sharing. I’ve strained my intercostals a few times now playing tennis. It takes me about a week to recover. Rolling over in bed and taking deep breaths can be painful.
Alec, same happened to me after playing tennis couple nights ago. What at home treatment did you do to get a taken care of?
@@YorkerNBouncer apply some Deep Heat cream and just rest. All the best for your recovery.
i go to the gym a and excersie regularly but I haven't had any pai up until I sat down this afternoon. ALL OF A SUDDEN it doesn't make sense to me .when i breath the right side of my back starts hurting like some sharp pain
@@rtbmub1855If you feel like you were stabbed in your middle upper back and it's sudden, I'm sure the Dr would agree that you should head to an ER to be sure that you're not experiencing an aortic problem.
Same here. !! Each breath is like stabbing pain😢
This girl is good! thankyou
Thank you
Thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you 😊
I think I have this right now. I’ve been coughing and it started to hurt and then the pain got even worse. Going to the doctors tomorrow to see what happened and I’m hoping for the best. Hurts so bad I’ve never pulled this muscle before
Im in severe pain at the moment. I think I slept on my right flank wrong. I can’t even bend at the waist!
Did you heal yet if so how long did it take I think I have the same isuue
I've strained my intercostals almost 4 months ago at the start of December doing BJJ. Multiple times I thought it was fully healed but every time I go back training I'm right back to square one with the sharp pain... Hard to know how long is enough
Do you have shortness of breath bro ??
Ive done the same thing, been off for 2 months and going back tonight.
I got it from doing a mir lock from half guard. How did yours happen?
@@jayanthtej1110 nope no shortness of breath
@@shotguntamPvP that sucks man hope it goes well for you tonight.
Mine happened from a wrestling exchange I think, didn't get an immediate pain in the moment but hurt really badly a few hours after the session
@@rorymahon8586 cheers! Yeah that's different from mines, I thought I had snapped a rib haha. GL with your recovery too bud.
I got this after going to low while leg pressing... How long should I wait until I can do it again? Is not that painful.
My pain reduced quite a bit after I took a cal-mag supplement and I thought it was ok to move around… bad idea. Every movement makes the pain worse and the area more sensitive. I’ve never had a muscle strain that got worse with warming up. Every other strain hurts when the body is cold and gets a little better when I move around. This one was scary, I wasn’t sure if I needed to call an ambulance because at first I was afraid to move at all because of the sharp pain, but I felt dumb calling 911 for a muscle pull. Now I know that minimizing movements, ESPECIALLY twisting and bending, helps minimize the sharp stabbing pain. The joys of being in a body…🥺
Im here because i started feeling the pain when I try to do jumping, moving in bed. This started when I started increasing the weight of the dumbbell i was lifting. After finishing all the sets in training, I followed it up with 25 min treadmill. Is it because of that why im experiencing this? Strength training is ok pushing, but picking the dumbbell there’s a moment of pain, but I can still perform the whatever I need to strenth. However, with movement like cardio like jumping, theres really pain. Sneezing and breathing and coughing is ok. When when I do jumping and when a bit when moving in bed.
I literally had my phone in my pocket, crouched over ribs to knees to shift a bit of furniture - phone dug into between my upper ribs (quite deeply too) and was instantly painful. I broke a rib in the lower part of my ribs a few months before so few days after I had this injury I can tell feels nearly as painful as a broken rib however it's definitely the muscles in between.
Does this heal eventually? It’s been 2 weeks and a half. First week was bad and now it’s bearable but still giving me a lot of anxiety. It’s so stiff and crampy on my right rib. It feels better later at night when I’m in bed. I also take muscle relaxers which help a lot. Just when I feel alright before going to bed, I wake up with the same soreness on my rib and back. Im so desperate for answers.
good night doctor
I sometimes feel small shocks / strong stitches from the side in the rib! I've felt this for about 2 years! My heart is fine! It usually happens to me when I'm not doing anything, relaxing! But for example, I work in construction and I go to the gym. After a day at work I feel small shocks in the rib on the left side and suddenly there is a SHOCK-TYPE TIP WITH A LOT OF STRENGTH. Then the pain stops, and it happens again the next day!
After these stitches, sometimes my ribs feel "sore"
It's not really pain, but when it comes, it catches me off guard.
can it be
Intercostal muscle strain:? During 2 years?
* I HAD MOTORBIKE CRASHES 2 YEARS AGO* But never went to hospital cause it was mild, but did affect my back, i dont feel back pain...
This happens to me!! I was in a car accident 2 years ago and ever since then, horrible chest pain. It started on the left, then moved to the right. After a year and half of this ongoing issue, It was ruled intercostal muscle pain. Even after countless heart tests & monitors. I also do have anxiety and get annoying heart palpitations, so that’s why I was confused. Even when my anxiety isn’t crippling me, the pain is there. The pain makes my nerves worse!! So, I Went to chiropractor after my crash and felt ok.. still the same pain your describing tho, but I felt it helped. Well, after I stopped going it got worse. I developed horrible tightness in my back to the point I could not longer finish or accomplish tasks and said enough is enough. I went to physical therapy and now finally I feel I can actually workout again (still easing into things though). My doctor said these can take years to treat. It’s very complicated… the intercostal muscles. And many conditions are associated with chest wall pain such as Costocondritis (I think I spelt that right lol). But it’s horrible.. I wish we could find healing, it’s frustrating to live with!
Mine bothers me more when I’m sleeping on my right side so now I’m sleeping on my left side. I was worried thinking it was something more serious but my dr said it’s a muscle strain. Hope it goes away soon
I have this left side intercostal muscles pain on the left side of my rib extending to my back but I'm not caughing and this problem have lasted for 3 months now I wish this really helps
Strained mine last week due to a cough (chest infection). I've finished antibiotics treatment but I'm still coughing so this strain is extremely painful still 🙈🙈🙈
Same here! Wish you good recovery and health!

@@mccarthydonnadonna57 I am going through it and ngl it it really hurts so badd af like it almost seems that I've been shot at my ribs somebody help me plz 😭
@@mccarthydonnadonna57 did you recover without surgery?
I'm in the same boat! What is this going around? I can't sleep! Lying down it feels like all my ribs are broken... So much wheezing and coughing, but I just can't do it anymore... So painful and the doctor's just don't see anything, but I'm dying here!
I have this issue on my right side underneath my breast from playing golf early this year. Been doing the stretches you posted earlier this year. Need to rest it during the winter months.
Mine is right below my left pec, on my shoulder blade and down my lat muscle due to golf
I have the same thing
Actually, it’s the weakness and palpitations on the muscle in the intercoastal area rather than the pain which makes me more anxious… hard to breathe and hard to speak… I have a hard this multiple times went to the emergency and they tested for echo and chest xray and told all good and it should be definitely weak muscles and muscle injury… I don’t know how to come out of this permanently…
How u doing now
I've been having this since last year. It is scary , I thought I was having a heart attack. Went to the ER several times because of it 😕
I got elbowed in right rub area. Felt winded. Pain lower rib area but had xray and no break. Day 5 now and no improvement. Had pins and needs nauseous feeling for a while but thats gone
Strained mine two weeks ago wrestling and JuJitsu. These videos help me last two weeks I’ve been doing the stretches. I’m about 80% recovered now. It hurt like a son of a bitch at first though.
This literally happened during one of my first rolls lol i guess i should do the stretches too
It’s really god forsaken pain!!! Do you know if you need surgery to repair it?
@@axiomloves21 No just keep doing the stretches and you’ll recover. It was awful pain but I recovered fully.
Did you have to let it heal for 4 to 6 weeks with restricted movement before doing the stretches? Did the stretches aggravate it in the beginning and cause more pain? I have always heard you need to restrict movement until it heals. Really would like your comments.
@@KateBernhardtTV within a few days of my injury I started my exercises. The stretches didn’t aggregate it any further in fact they really felt good to do it.
I think i have a mild case of this, but i don't know what brought it on. Maybe carrying the surf board from the hire shop to the sea last week?! I just noticed it hurt when i lied down on the board.
Because it's quite mild and bearable, i haven't contacted the GP, despite the advice in this video. I'm in the UK, and I can guarantee they wouldn't test me, just tell me to take pain killers and rest!
The only time it's annoying for me is sleeping, as I like to sleep in my right hand side, but it hurts with the pressure.
Thank you for your message, we are also based in the UK 😊 so sorry to hear your are struggling! We would recommend booking in with a musculoskeletal expert including an osteopath or physio who can test your symptoms thoroughly and provide advice and hands on treatment if relevant to you 😊
Many thanks for your advice. I actually spoke to my GP on the phone just now, and just as expected, he said it was definitely caused as a result of carrying the surfboard. He just told me to take ibuprofen and paracetamol.
i have this and i also have a cough right now due to asthma so every time i cough it feels like im being stabbed, how can i cough if it hurts every time?
This injury really sucks mine felt like a broken rib at first
What did you do to relieve it?
What kind of Dr. Do I go to
My lower back & it thrn most offen around to lower left ribs & oh it hurts ! Sometimes get nausea. I fell a few months ago my back hurt but so did knee. Physio
Injured my ribs at work lowering a heavy door off a deck to someone below. Person couldn't reach it and after 30-seconds of holding it and waiting I felt something inside pop. I thought I slipped a rib or something.
Pain wasn't bad about 30-mins later and felt relatively fine outside of a very, very slight twinge in the area every once in a while for the next two days.
BUT THEN, three days later, out of the blue, brushing my teeth in the morning and WHAM, felt something twist inside my ribcage and instant acute pain.
Been 5-days since then, 8-days total since injury and pain gets worse everyday. I mean worse pain I've felt.
Anybody experience this delayed onset pain, and if so...how long does this last, I have to get back to work but struggle taking deep breaths in, let alone any actual physical activity.
HELP!
I thought this is what I have but I think mine is nerve pain. It's horrible I've had it over a year now. It hurts to move side to side and most nights I have trouble sleeping. I've started PT but haven't noticed any changes. I'm going to see about getting a nerve block or some kind of injection 😢
Check with your doctor and stop self diagnosing.
Where were you after open heart surgery 9 years ago? I asked and asked the health professionals and got brushed off.
I've strained my intercostal muscles snowboarding last week in the French alps performing 180/360 spins, it hurts when I breathe and I'm unsure if I can work tomorrow with it, as I'm self employed I don't get paid for time off. Has anyone got any tips for a speedy recovery?
How r u now?
I strained mine 2 months ago! Swimming exercises! How long does this last? It feels a little better, but still hurts!😟
Did yours heal?
Hi @clock-kd4iw , How are you now, Ho much time it took to heal ?
can you please reply, it will be helpful to me.
I wonder how does a chest cough injure only one side of the body, for me the right intercostal side (as opposed to having a symmetrical effect on the rib cage)?
Hi, did the pain reduce?
@@sanjana1542 it did! But mostly thanks to therapeutic deep strong massages, also they recommended me not to "diminish" the cough, the opposite, but to hold the rib cage while coughing
I went to the ER because I hurt something in the rib area and I was told I had badly bruised ribs but now I think I strained my intercostal muscle
How did you get better?
I’m dealing with this now. I picked up my daughter and twisted. I got a sharp pain in my chest and they did tests on my heart and said it was great and it was nerve pain or some type of muscle strain. I’m waiting on my imaging results now to see what it actually is. Starting physical therapy on the 27th. My pain is in the back of my scapula and goes around my underarm and sometimes my clavicle. It’s been almost 4 weeks of this pain.
@@x.Kristen.x Im healed now I bruised my ribs tore the intercoastal muscle and got a hematoma

I could you not 2 years ago I had lifted a weight and idk what happened but when I went to sleep, I woke up with excruciating pain from the left side of my rib and went to my left chest😭😭😭 I couldn’t even take a small breaths cause it hurted like Hell, and when I finally forced a deep breath it felt like something grabbed my chest and squeezed it hard hard and it left me traumatized and I could still feel the sensation of the pain and today I got it again because I slept wrong and my arm was shoved in my rib 😭😭😭😭😭😭
It only makes people feel bad when you tell them to go to a doctor and get a bunch of fancy assessments when they can't afford it. People who can go to doctors don't turn to youtube for medical help.
Really painful. I am still hurting and it's almost a month.
I strained my intersostal muscles working out. It hurt, but I merely reduced weight, stopped all load-bearing exercises, and about 2 weeks into it I am as good as new. Heat on the effected area was crucial at the start.
Why heat and not ice?
@kossttass I think it wasn't as swollen as some may have it with an injury so the heat helped to relax my muscle there. It is unfortunately in a crucial area for constant bending and flexing when moving and especially while lying down so the heat helped relax my muscles there after a day's worth of use.
@@agaposintonTheon Im at 2 weeks and half. Less pain just really stiff and sensitive to the rib. Just feels crampy and uncomfortable. Did you also feel this? Im just wondering when the feeling will go away.
@BrianAjeti yes, very much so, the feeling goes away as you heal (I know pretty obvious) it took about a month, but I am also in my late 30s and have abused my body with hard labor on top of everything. I talked to a PT at my work and they said a good exercise for stretching your ribs is inhaling as much as you can into your lungs and holding it for a few seconds. This will stretch the rib cage minimally. Stay strong you'll get through this!
7 months on I am still in pain.
The possibilities are endless one need that vision again reconsider

How are you feeling now , me too with same kind of problem
I am going through same problem now, can you please let me know how much time it took you to heal.
Me too!! Palpitations as well
Try to see what triggers palpitations. Sometimes it’s medicine or other conditions (some related to the stomach) that cause palpitations. Medications or caffeine consumption can cause them as well. So look at several areas to determine what may be causing it.
