No questions, just wanna thank you for this content. I went to an orthopedist and he told me it was only a cramp and gave me some pain killers but the problem persists. Apparently the doctors here in Brazil don't care so much about their patients. I'm definitely going to a chiropractic, thank you again.

Thank you sir! I have not been able to go to a doctor and have been so confused as to what it is. I work as an order selector, and I’m kind of hard headed and try to perform the tasks as fast as possible for the highest percent/pay. So I have been very inefficient by grabbing multiple cases of 10-50lb product at a time. And believe that’s how I caused this. Thank you so much for the help!
This just happened to me about 2 weeks ago I was driving then all of a sudden a severe cramp happened in the middle of my back left side, I barely could get out of the car. The pain is off and on but seems to be getting better, not as painful to breathe like before.
Thank you for the information. ❤️ And I've lifted weights weekly, for years! So I was surprised this happened to me. All I did was lift a heavy pot while cooking. The muscle spasms were so painful that I could barely breathe. Ugh it stinks getting older. 😭

Hello Doctor, Excellent video, I've been dealing with this condition for 2 weeks and I will be seeing a local chiropractor this Tuesday. I've been taking Advil and a muscle relaxer prescribed by my Doctor. I'm 62 years old and an active tennis player, so I hoped this condition would get better fairly quickly, but I've read that it can take several weeks to heal. Having information does help because I've never felt this before and it can be frustrating to work with and not be able to do my normal sports. Thank again

Thanks for the video, glad to see what's going on with this muscle. Initially I thought it might have been a broken rib, but after some research, I'm pretty sure I just strained my intercostal muscles, though I have no idea if it's the internal/external or both. Did it by slamming into the ground very abruptly while skateboarding. It's been a couple days now where it hurts at the bottom of my left rib cage any time I cough, twist my torso, or lift stuff.

Living in Thailand its impossible to find a doctor or physio who speaks good English where I live. I've had pain from an intercostal muscle strain for 3 weeks now that has simply got more intense during that time. Breathing is no issue (think I use my diaphragm already), but most movements exacerbate it and by the end of a regular day I can barely move my left side without sharp stabbing pains. Anti inflammatories (ibuprofen 400mg x 3 a day) do nothing now. I have muscle relaxers but they didn't explain much about them and I don't like taking drugs without a good understanding of them. I'm starting physio and that didn't help. Actually hurt more. I would take any tips at all possible doc. I'm struggling to do anything physical now and feel like a cripple with no end to this seemingly in sight.

Duration of symptoms depends on severity of injury. If injury is severe, recovery could take four to six months. a while back i did what i believe is this. on the upper left side of my back i experienced pain after not only finishing an intense workout but then doing one intense pushing movement on a very heavy person. now i always thought that had something to do with my muscles connected to my shoulder. just today i had a cough and kept sneezing. later on in the day it continued, without even noticing i did so i just had the same exact feeling of injury but on the opposite side. now i know that when i was going to the gym and i couldnt figure out what i was supposed to avoid doing because pain hit me no matter what, i know now that breathing is the issue. i still need to see a doctor to be diagnosed but this describes in debt what i experienced and i knew my pain just diddnt feel like a back muscle that showed up on back anatomy charts.

I've been feeling this for quite a while now. Specifically weeks ago. I'm 16 years old. I was consulted by 2 doctors and 1 nurse separately and on different weeks. I forgot what the first doctor diagnosed me with but it had something to do with my muscles. The nurse recommended me gaviscon since I might have acid reflux. The third recommended me warm compress to apply which works so far. I researched and it takes about a week to a month for it to recover depending on the damage. I think my ribs are still healing. Quick question, 1. Is shaking of the hands and legs related to it? 2. Can the pain happen randomly? 3. Is warm compress good? What else should I do? (Non related question) 4. What can I do to treat my sleepiness most of the time in the morning and my stiff neck? The pain I feel now isn't much as it did my first few times of experiencing it. Whenever the pain happens, I would apply warm compress to it.
Thanks for watching the video and for the questions. 1) Shaking of hands and legs is usually not directly related to an intercostal strain. 2) Yes, the pain can occur randomly but usually occurs with specific motions which either contract or stretch the intercostal muscles. 3) Heat therapy will help increase blood flow to the muscles which will help relax the muscles. 4) Here are links to three videos that may be helpful. Hey doc, thanks for this content and for the time taken to answer everyone's questions. I've had a pain in the lower left rib area for a month or so now, and I think I've made it worse by prodding it to try and identify where it's localised. I'm planning on resting it now and applying some hot/cold therapy, as well as seeing a practicioner. Interestingly though if I find the spot, it hurts like a stabbing pain and then I can't find it again until I leave it alone for about 30 seconds. Is that normal with this type of strain? I also experience dull aches, especially while hunched forward at a desk.

A physician came in and did a touch test of some kind and cane to the conclusion that I had a minor chest injury. Wasn't too specific but they sent me to the hospital for blood work. No X-ray so im assuming it's no big deal? I had all the symptoms as stated in the video. It's been 4 weeks since the injury and i feel like I've mostly recovered. very interesting question. First of all, If I were you, I would see a medical professional immediately to have my spleen checked. I would not hesitate. In most cases of an enlarged spleen, there is a sensation of fullness. In an intercostal strain, the symptoms increase with ribcage movement.

I have had a dull pain in my back right ribs for the last year or so (when twisting, deep breathing, or moving my shoulder forward), and I believe it was caused by sitting in a twisted position for several hours without moving while working at my computer. I hope you can help me out 🙏🏻 my muscle ended up taring after two years of feeling a sting on my chest. I am in a lot of pain. My chest gets swollen if I stand more than a few minutes I can’t even stand anymore. I believe it’s caused by bad posture while breastfeeding my kids for many years now. I am now on complete bed rest and I take 600 ibuprofen, 1000 paracetamol and 50 tramadol 3 times a day. Will this injury heal ? Will I be able to stand again ? Do you know Anyone that has experienced this type of muscle tare injury and how they healed? I am so scared. It’s very scary not to be able to use your body for more than a few minutes. My chest injury is on my left side right under my left breast close to my sternum. It’s warm to the touch. I have now been on full rest for 3 days and been able to get the swelling completely down. It still hurts quite a lot in the evening even with pain killers. And I try to move very little on the bed. This is awful. I have a 2 year old and a 7 year old. Will I be back on my feet ? How long will this injury take to heal in your opinion ? I find it quite extreme that I can’t stand for more than a couple minutes and I I have to be very careful with my movement to not cause more damage … because when I have moved a bit more I just get worse. I should mention it does not hurt when I breath only if I breath really deep and expand my ribs a lot which I don’t do with regular breathing .. it also does not hurt when I sneeze or cough. I did go to my doctor , to the hospital and called a ambulances in the last 2 weeks. They checked did a ecg 3 times , checked my lungs , did 2 X-rays and 2 ultrasound. They can’t see the tare but I feel it it’s clear it’s there and it’s a internal wound. Warm to the touch and if I would walk more than a few minutes at a time it gets swollen and I can move even less. Can you give me advice please ?

When this happens will it affect acid reflux ? I started feeling a soreness on my left side after doing heavy squatting reps, I didn’t think of it as much and squatted again and after that day it got worse, but than I woke up one day threw up acid reflux and had a little bit of blood mixed in. Went to the hospital said could be hiatal hernia, maybe a intercoastal muscle strain, but they also said I might have GERD
It is possible that they could be related. If I were you, I would see a Doctor of Chiropractic for evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of the intercostal strain. I would also do research on testing for GERD and hiatal hernia.
I went to the ER and they did blood work, xrays and CT scan because it felt like i was being stabbed whenever i breathed in, they couldnt find anything, so they hypothesized that it was a muscular and/ or a nerve issue, i thought it was going to be gallstone pancreatitis or something like that but now i see what it might be

I’m 2 weeks back in the gym after a year off. Lifting incredibly low weight for my size and very low reps. Just focusing on form. The past 3-4 days I’ve experienced exactly what is described. If I take time off I’m worried I’ll lose progress but I don’t want to make this worse. Any thoughts? I am happy to just go for walks for a week or two while it heals but damn… I’m lifting like 10lbs per exercise just to feel a bit of resistance while I work on form. Don’t understand how something like this could result from such measured approaches.
I was in the gym today and got a sudden gas-like cramp-like pain in the center of my diaphragm. When it subsided (I imagine with digestion) I had a tight feeling (dull pain) in the top of my left rib cage, sort of near the chest. It doesn’t hurt severely, but is very uncomfortable when I’m bending down or taking a deep breath in. Is this a muscle issue or do you think I should see a cardiologist? Thanks.
If I were you I would see a cardiologist to rule out a heart pathology. Once, the heart pathology is ruled out, I would schedule to see a Doctor of Chiropractor for evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.
I’ve kinda been dealing with this for a while bro. At least a month and a half now. (No exaggeration) I was playing the game and someone scared the shit out of me and I jumped really hard. It slowly started going away until one day I tried to scream really loud and I agitated it all over. The pain is bearable like I can breathe deep without severe pain it’s just uncomfortable. I’ve even to the ER and got a EKG on my heart. It came back good

Hello Doctor, just wanted to ask some questions about the treatment for a severe strain, I will be going to the doctor but I don’t have the money or insurance to pay for unnecessary scans. I am a construction worker. I’m guessing the repetitive motion of lifting wood caused me to slightly strain my right side intercostal muscle, I kept working because I had no choice and tried not to lift as much but as my job is heavy I have to. The pain was manageable. Then it started hurting when I laughed or twisted too fast or took a really deep breathe but it didn’t hurt to touch or put pressure on the area. Then today after work I was just laying down and I stretched and heard a pop in the same area. I screamed in pain and since then I have limited movement or else I get intense pain. I have no difficulty breathing but it does hurt really bad when I sneeze or cough or laugh. I’d say the pain is 6/10 but in those instances or a twisting motion or anytime I have to use that muscle the pain is 11/10. I refuse to go if I just go to get sent home with painkillers and a prescription to rest.
Hi Ernesto. If I were you I would start my rehab with slow and controlled range of motion exercises through a symptom free range of motion. Even if that motion is miniscule. Spinal: Rotation, lateral flexion, flexion and extension. Pelvis: Pelvic Tilt, lateral shift right & left, circular, figure eight. Then I would advance to isometric strengthening exercises. I heard a snap when arm wrestling, like when you clap your hands, and now I have pain in my right rib cage. I cannot feel or see any changes. No brusing, no bumps or anything. Could it be an intercostal strain? Or is broken ribs more likely? I can breath ok but it hurts to sleep on both the left and right side. When I move my right arm, there's some clicking sound in my right rib cage area. It feels and sounds like when you've had too much water to drink and it gobbles around in your tummy.
Good question. Honestly it can be either one or it can be a rib subluxation, (bone out of place.) If I were you I would get an x-ray to rule out a rib fracture. Until then, I would apply ice for twenty minutes with a towel between ice pack and skin. I would apply the ice several twice through out the day.
Can there be a spasm when bending over & expanding the diaphragm (through breathing) as well as a popping sensation when standing back up and stretching?
Very insightful video doctor! I’m not entirely sure, but there’s surly something wrong with my chest. When I stand for too long (happens within minutes) my breathing adequacy reduces. My chest feels like something is heavily compressing against it. When I sit down, and lay back in my recliner, I can’t breathe too well. I can’t even sit regularly, with good posture. I’m constantly having to slop forward to breathe. I can’t perform my usual exercises anymore, because the chest pressure is unbearable. I’m no means out of shape. I exercise regularly. Well I did, till this issue occurred. The crushing feeling completely diminishes when I lay down on my side, or stomach, and my breathing rate is good. Do you have any idea as to what that might be? Oh and, when I’m standing and take a deep breathe, I feel as sense of resistance, same whenever I’m seated back or seated with good posture.

Hello Dr. Is it possible to strain the interior intercostal muscles? I have been told I probably have costochondritis but a lot of my symptoms don’t add up to what I see. When I exhale that’s when I feel soreness in my intercostals and behind my sternum. We’ve already done x-rays and MRIs and CT scans and I’ve been told my heart and lungs are fine. I believe I probably hurt myself when I did a weeks worth of extensive mopping at a commercial building. Sounds ridiculous but I think that’s what happened. I’m pretty much over the most painful part of it all but still recovering and this happened back in late October! I also would like to add that my thoracic spine was extremely stiff and since stretching it on a foam roller and a back pod as well as physical therapy it has loosened up so much that it now pops in cracks with deep breath‘s whereas before it was too stiff to even move. Also when I get down on the foam roller and get a pop out of my back my ribs hurt much less!

It felt as if it was almost back to normal and I smoked from a pre roll and felt fine until I smoked from a water pipe and the pain came back right after that. I think it’s due to all the smoke at one time but am very confused why this would happen. Would really appreciate any insight

It may be from the process of smoking. The muscles may have been uses in a manner that stressed the injured intercostals. It is also possible that the product contained a substance that increased inflammation in the injured area.

One week on and it is still sore to move in different positions and also the worst is when I lay down. When I lay on my back I feel the pain the most when I breath and it feels like there is a weight on top of my chest. Would this be considered intercorstal muscle strain??
If I were you I would see a Doctor of Chiropractic for evaluation, imaging, diagnosis and treatment. There are numerous injuries that can be your diagnosis so x-rays should be performed to rule out a fracture.
Hi, i have had this pain now for 3 months and each time i think i'm on the mend something as simple as a cough or sneeze knocks me back weeks. I cannot get a deep breath in and have to do anything i can to divert a sneeze so i doesn't happen. Is it something that eventually goes away on its own.
If I were you, I would see a Chiropractor for evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. A cough and a sneeze are intense contractions of the intercostal muscles therefore they elicit and intensify symptoms. If not treated properly the source of the symptoms may not be corrected. This can lead to lingering symptoms and recurrences.

I'm 62 years old and an active tennis player, so I hoped this condition would get better fairly quickly, but I've read that it can take several weeks to heal.
Having information does help because I've never felt this before and it can be frustrating to work with and not be able to do my normal sports.
Thank again

Hi bent over washing machine n felt a bad pain under right breast
No trouble breathing hurts when I cough

I'm struggling to do anything physical now and feel like a cripple with no end to this seemingly in sight.

a while back i did what i believe is this. on the upper left side of my back i experienced pain after not only finishing an intense workout but then doing one intense pushing movement on a very heavy person. now i always thought that had something to do with my muscles connected to my shoulder. just today i had a cough and kept sneezing. later on in the day it continued, without even noticing i did so i just had the same exact feeling of injury but on the opposite side. now i know that when i was going to the gym and i couldnt figure out what i was supposed to avoid doing because pain hit me no matter what, i know now that breathing is the issue. i still need to see a doctor to be diagnosed but this describes in debt what i experienced and i knew my pain just diddnt feel like a back muscle that showed up on back anatomy charts.

Quick question,

Tenderness is a symptom of a muscle strain. When hunched forward the front of the ribs are compressed so symptoms may increase.

my muscle ended up taring after two years of feeling a sting on my chest.

Hey, quick question. I was doing yard work and came down with strep throat. I’ve got over the sickness but I have a sharp pain in my ribs for the last 3 days. Think it could be the strain from both activities that caused these to spasm?
It is definitely possible. Coughing and sneezing cause intense contractions of the intercostal muscles.
How long can the pain last
Recovery time depends on severity. Can be anywhere from two to sixteen weeks.
Can it bounce between right & left sides 1st time it was sudden deep pain plus spasms like pain on the left side... seen my chiropractor Plus I get monthly massages because I have a fiperomyalgia and now its seems to Periodically move from side to side with no Real movement Pain lasting for several days.... You may have been lying in a position that placed a larger than normal amount of stress on the intercostals. Most likely, the muscles were fatigued due to prior activity, then you slept in an awkward position.

@@drdozellodc thank you for the tip i will be sure to do so, however do you have any idea why this may have caused this to come back
It may be from the process of smoking. The muscles may have been uses in a manner that stressed the injured intercostals. It is also possible that the product contained a substance that increased inflammation in the injured area.
Can this strain occur due to hard running? I ran a 12-mile run with some speed work. I was fine the next day, but two days later I've had rib discomfort. It's been about four days now. What do you think.

If I were you, I would see a Chiropractor for evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.
