  • The World of basketball has been recently talking about the NBA and its 65 Game Rule and it has made a lot of people share their opinions on it.
For those who do not know before the beginning of the season Adam Silver issued a new rule where a player has to play at least 65 Games in order to be eligible for In-Season Awards and All-Team Selections
The players who have been in the media recently that may be at risk to this rule in full effect are Joel Embiid and Tyrese Haliburton, two star caliber players who could miss out on big accomplishments. But that is just something that the NBA had to do because let’s be honest here the league has evolved and has gotten a lot more entitled. Players have now felt entitled to get the things that they want by any means and do not feel like playing because they do not want to get injured.

65 games is more then reasonable, every MVP except a handful have played 65 games at least. Players who've won who've played less then 65 are. Giannis 64 gp, LeBron 62gp, Malone 49 gp, bill Walton 58gp, bob cousy 64 gp. Welcome to the real world it's more than just being great at what you do it's also the ability to show to work consistently. If your the best person at your job but barley show up for work that doesn't make you deserving of employee of the year lmao or a god dam raise

I agree with it. Being available for your team and playing should be important and players should be held accountable.. Seems like the only ones complaining about this rule are the usual suspects that sit out all the time. I don't think an MVP should be able to sit out whenever they want, or skip certain matchups because they might get exposed by better players (Example: Embiid has been sitting out for years when playing in Denver against Jokic). I don't think Embiid would deserve the MVP even if he played enough games, he pads his stats, gets most of his points from bs foul calls, and can't win when it matters. Every year he gets exposed in the playoffs. I understand the playoffs are separate from the regular season, but they're more important, and when you can't win in the playoffs, you don't deserve to be MVP. I feel like there are more deserving people such as Luka, SGA, Jokic, hell I'd even pick LeBron at age 39 averaging 25/8/7 over Embiid. Just my opinion tho, I'm sure some would disagree and that's fine

There was already a threshold on voting **really**; you hear the voters saying "didnt play enough" in the media all the time but I don't have a problem with an official threshold but it does put a big asterix against award winners. MVP Luca (*Embid ineligible) which isn't fair on those players who win the awards.

If players would just play basketball and stop being so spoiled and play every game as if it was their last, they wouldn’t be in this situation. Back then, basketball was competitive. Players wanted to win, they wanted to put on a show for the fans and most importantly, they wanted to be known as one of the greatest. Players now don’t care. That’s why All star games aren’t being watched. The league needs to fix this and right now they’re searching for solutions

All players and coaches and gms should get votes on the top 15 players, this guys would be exempted from the 65 game rule!!!

I think what the rule incentivizes is playing through injuries, ESPECIALLY if a player is competitive for end of season awards. Sure less players will do “load management” and watch how many games they’ve played, but really competitive good players will try to play through injuries now and risk catastrophic injuries (I.e. Embiid) to get awards and money. I get the old heads played 7463728282 games a season (I think MJ missed 7 games in 12 seasons which is FUCKING nuts) but they were also encouraged to sit non-playoff games when they were obviously injured . I like the intent of the rule, but I think it misses the mark

Embiid is on 34 games right now, and he's gonna sit basically the rest of the season. It don't matter if he's averaging 40.. no one who plays 34 should EVER get MVP, so your question is moot

Yeah I just realized he probably isn't gonna play. I recorded this before the reports of his meniscus tear.

The problem isn't the rule, it's the number of games set. Some players have more physical difficulties and they're not at fault because of that. Plus the NBA regular season is way too long, has the back to back games, a lot of stuff that when you add up to that rule, which in turn is tied to payment in a lot of players contracts (bonus for all nba nominations for instance) results in a league that is putting their players at accentuated risk. I think it's important, in this context, to remember that no matter the wages, this is still a work relation. It is a company knowingly risking the health of it's workers.
Again, the rule is valid, a minimum threshold should be set, but 80% is just absurd in any context of professional sports. Injuries are as part of the game as anything and should be taken in account. And that affects us fans too, because it will burn out the players in the, again, way too long regular season and make them less present in the playoffs. Honestly, it's the first year of the rule and we already have a chance of having the undisputable MVP out of the playoffs either because of injury or because his team is dropping in results in the end of the regular season. I just can't see how this is good for fans and players. Maybe, maybe, for the league - as in billionaire owners -, which honestly fuck them.
