- If you look around you'll find a lot of videos on how to shorten a VW pan to accept a 356 speedster or Manx-type buggy body that result in a hacked together pan, but this video shows how Washburn's Metal creates a shortened pan that looks like it came from the VW factory--inotherwords: perfect. This method is the gold standard for How To Shorten A VW Pan.

That shop is a total dream! Amazing work!
Beautiful job, I can imagine how expensive it is. But if you want good quality, you’ll need to pay for it.
Well, I guess the question that most people might have is, say I deliver a chassis and shortened pans to Washburn's for a buggy chassis, what could one expect to pay? The last thing I want is a hack job. I'm planning on getting a brand new Meyers Manx Remastered kit and I think that a quality job on the chassis is extremely important. I basically want a "new" vehicle when it's done. Thanks for the video, very informative.
Well I hope what I showed is that Washburn doesn't do "hack jobs." As for pricing, it's a lot like how you'd order a new car--what options do you want? I believe he has a worksheet that you fill out indicating what options you'd like (IRS or swingaxle, fuel injected or not, powdercoated or raw, etc.), and he can get pretty close to a firm price. He'd have to see what you're starting with, of course (in case it's bent or twisted, etc.) but if perfection is what you want, he can do it.
@@EGeisertPhoto. Thanks for the reply. Yes, you showed that Washburn does top-notch work! I am a strong proponent of letting professionals practice their craft and I am far from a professional in this area. As much as I enjoy being elbow-deep in a project, I believe the better approach is seen here in your video. I can assemble all day and that will be enough to satisfy my needs. I will get in touch with Washburn for a quote. Thanks again!
I'm in the same boat.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Thx! 😁

Estoy En Proceso De La Fabricación De Una Réplica PORSCHE 356 SPEEDSTER
I need one of these, I just bought a beach buggy, the front half is 61 VW and the back half is 64 Corvair, ,, very unsafe hack job
Is the Manx and 356 shortened by the same length?
No; buggy is shorter.
Hope you show us the hole build process
That'd be one long video! :o) But the hardest work (the pan conversion) is done and, as they say: finishing it is the easy part, all I need is time and money.
What is that black body made from look s amazing or is it a kit

Just a thought but with all the work and fabrication put into shortening the transmission tunnel what would the time difference be in making a new transmission tunnel from scratch?
While the work may roughly be the same, both the fabrication time and extra materials (to make a tunnel) would be cost prohibitive. VW tunnels are quite stout, so better to use what's there.
