Is it possible to access any external storage attached to the Nvidia Shield from the Desktop PC? I ask this as I would love to be able to assign a drive letter for the external storage on the desktop PC so I can then add new items into specific folders such as movies, tv shows and so on. Being able to do this would save having to remove the external storage and reconnecting it after adding new items to it. I don't have any external drives to test it out, so any answers would be great. Many thanks
It says I need permission to copy files from my pc to the Nvidia Shield. It was working before the new Nvidia update. Any ideas? I don't see anything in Shield settings to grant permissions....
As long as your laptop and the Nvidia shield are connected to the same router yes. Wifi and ethernet in the same house are almost always the same network.
Wired is always the most stable, but due to wire length, wire quality, and other issues, so sometimes the wired speed can be a lot slower then it's otherwise capable of. Wired>wireless>bad wired>bad wireless
Thanks GGM. Do you think the best option then would be separate ethernet cables from router to PC and router to Shield, with the PC & Shield linked via Wi-Fi. All help greatly appreciated.
The Nvidia shield has a game streaming option to allow streaming from your PC already. It's called Nvidia shield gamestream. support-shield.nvidia.com/gamestream-user-guide/#t=NVIDIA_GameStream.htm

Pretty Much Yeah, it Makes transferring files to the Nvidia Shield quite Easy. As well as the other way too. You can very easily watch a video you downloaded on your computer through the same connection.
Hi when I get to log in on the network screen, it opens in a browser, stating cannot connect, unlike when you do it it prompts for user name and password for the shield, any ideas :?
Which method did you use //shield or //192.168.0.xxx? I find that the ip address of the shield works better then the other. You should have the ip address from the screen where you enables network option.

Sigh - didn't work for me. My Shield's external drives had been working great for almost a year allowing my Win10 machine to copy files over as needed - however now it randomly stops working giving me (in Win10) this error: Network Error Windows cannot access \\shield\MyExtDriveA You do not have permission to access \\shield\MyExtDriveA. Contact your network administrator to request access. For more information about permissions, see Windows Help and Support I figured following the steps in this vid would be pointless since I had everything already working - sadly I was right. I'm guessing I have a whole different issue. If anyone else in the same boat please reply/LMK.
External drive issues wouldn't be network related "contact your network administrator" is just a path to help you get the issue fixed not a tell tale sign of where to start. I would start by connecting the external HDD to another device like a PC just to check and make sure it's working. Don't format it or anything just connect it and see if it works. If it's not working on the PC then you may need either A: a new enclosure or B: the drive may have died and need to be replaced. C: the cables may be bad or finally D: you may be dealing with bad ports on the Nvidia shield tv. External enclosures generally need external power to work as well so make sure the power going to the enclosure is still working and connected. Hope you get it working. -ggm

If you can watch a 4K video over the internet I don't see why you couldn't do it over a Local Area Network. You might need to run ethernet cables as Wifi might not be stable enough for a stream of 4k Data. 10/100 would work but I imagine a nice 10/100/1000 ethernet connection would be ideal. I would start with The Connection and perhaps hardware issues if your wiring isn't up to specification. Then if that is proved capable go to the Software and try different player applications on your Nvidia Shield TV

On your Windows PC simply enable any folder you want to share as a shared folder.... That's it. You can right click for those options quite easily and it's done in about 5 seconds. Just share whatever folders you need to access to quick and easy and then you can control all the transfers and file moving from the Nvidia Shield FX file explorer Network share window. Great for people who might have some external hard drives on a Windows PC full of video perhaps. Maybe you have less storage space on your Shield but perhaps a single SSD connected? This does require the pro version of FX file explorer but it's only like two or three bucks and that file brother is exceptionally good. Totally worth it.
