I am afraid you might be out of luck. I have had very little luck restoring a unit from a dead drive. This is copy of my drive with a factory reset. I don't know what else you can do. Sometimes it seems like nothing gets the drive going again once the HDD is dead which is why I strongly emphasize during the video to make a backup before it dies... Some people have had moderate success getting support through the android forums asking for specific help from some of the gurus there.
God i miss the old interface so much, the new google interface is so invasive and the ADs OH THE ADS WHYYYYYY.... You seem pretty smart, would you happen to know how to root one of these things? @@ticketman617 we'll take a look at my video on how to connect it by Network I think that's the best option by far. Because then you can have like a four terabyte hard drive full of videos and movies on your computer and you can just watch them straight from there
Hey, question. I’ve seen pictures on EBay where they are putting M.2 drives in the Nvidia Shield Tv. But no videos on RUclips. Do you have any information on this???
@@ticketman617 yes actually, so m2 drives are essentially just a socket. So you get a converter that turns m2 into sata and connect it that way. You wouldn't see the same speeds a m2 drive gets because in the end it is still limited by the sata connection. But it is possible.
Is it possible to use Mac disk utility for cloning? I still need a new SSD but I'm thinking it should work. What is the hdd formatted to? Is it ntfs or fat32?
It's Linux based it doesn't even show up in Windows or Mac as a usable partition. You need a program that's going to clone the drive without worrying about what's on it that's why I use raw hard drive copy because it's just copies of drive exactly as it is bit for bit. Alternatively you can also use a drive copier which is a hardware device where you put one hard drive and one slot and one hard drive at another and it copies them

If you do it correctly the system doesn't even know anything has changed. But it's going to be a lot faster and a lot more responsive. Also if you have 2015 shield and it's still using the hard drive that it came with it's 5 years old now and hard drives that are 5 years old can die at any moment. Are you sure it's dead? The Nvidia shield doesn't turn the fan on very much. It has to get quite hot for the fan to run. I have an extra used fan if you really need one I'd sell ya for $5 + shipping
@@GGMentor no i'm not sure the fan is defective but it doesn't even turn this summer but it may be normal i had changed the thermal paste and put a copper heat sink everything works fine. Do you think everything is normal?
@@marcusbinder890 there is a chance it's just staying very cool and the fan is not coming on because it's not reaching the proper thermal threshold to trigger the fan to turn on. If you redid the thermal grease and put a copper heatsink that could explain it. And that's a good thing not a bad thing. If you really want to test it I would run a program that is very demanding like dolphin emulator and really heat the unit up and see if the fan turns on.
Can you remove the HDD without doing any of the other steps before? If so are there any parts I have to remove to get out the way or can I go straight to it
You don't have to do the maintenance part of it no. I always figure though if I am opening up a unit anyway it's a good time to do some maintenance. The hdd itself has three main steps. #1 is the screw/plate holding one side down. #2 is the tape holding the hdd down and holding the misc wires down that need to be removed. #3 is the sata adapter which has to be disconnected from the circuit board. It is glued onto the hdd with a mild adhesive so be careful not to break/rip the adapter. The removal of the hdd starts at 10:00
If you want me to take a look at your unit contact me directly at gingergamingmentor@gmail.com I make no guarantees I can repair your unit, and I have very little time these days so Don't expect it done in a timely manner.

I have never been able to go from a blank drive to a working one. Sorry, if your original drive is dead completely you might be sol. I always copy the original drive onto the new one using raw HDD one then go from there.
Sounds like you might have the European version. I think you have to take two screws out for that version but you may want to reference a guide specifically for the euro model
I always swap it out with the exact same size drive. There are guides on the internet that go over the process of installing a larger drive but they're complicated I don't usually do them
#1 I don't do that #2 you can't easily change from 512gb to 1tb it fails unless special editing is done #3 The 16Gb model does not nor can it have a HDD. They are missing the connectors on the mainboard.
After you say "I'll see you on the other side " after going into safe mode I loose volume and your instructions appear on the top right corner. Is this only me? Rewind and same spot??

To Ginger Gamer Do u fix the nivida tv box? I got one that wont boot all the way. Some times it hangs up on boot screen and sometimes just a black screen. Was wondering if it was a hard drive failure
Was doing this today using a samsung evo 500gb and around 22% during the raw copy the program threw a read error and the process stopped. Is this just a software issue or is my shield tv HDD too far gone for the clone to work?
Try a different sata port, maybe even a different sata cable, also Try flipping the drive over so it's upside down sometimes that helps alleviate read arm issues temporarily. Also make that the drive isn't getting overly hot, maybe even point a fan at it. Older drives can get really hot while being read and then start throwing errors. I would keep trying until you get a success. however take note of where it throws the error so if it throws the error in the same spot twice you will know it's not random and instead something wrong with the disk in that exact location.
Not with this method, but yes. You have to follow a different guide. www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/237196/guide-migrate-to-ssdhdd-of-any-size-only-for-pro-v/

Try different methods of applying the steps. Sometimes I noticed that holding down the power button for 5 seconds at different points during the boot up process would yield different results. like try holding it as soon as it turns on for 5 seconds release. Try waiting 1-5 seconds and then hold the button for 5 seconds and release. Try letting it do one boot cycle then as soon as the screen goes black do one 5 second hold and release. I had a similar case with a boot looping 2019 model and how I got into the recover menu was tricky and it took me many attempts.

All good and nice but you fucked up on one part and it´s a major one because you never screwed back that little bracket that holds the hdd/sdd in it place. You only stuck back the silicon bumpers and whoops forgot the bracket!
then you don't have the "Pro" Edition 2015 or 2017. If your device is a Pro than it is a 2019 Pro and 2019 Pro's did not have HDD's. If you have a 2015 or 2017 edition non pro they did not have HDD's and HDD's cannot be added internally to units that never had them(they are missing the hookups). you will have to look at external options.

Just subscribed, great stuff! I'm in the middle of the clone process right now. Only thing is that I'm going from 500gb - 1tb. I'm wondering if my partition will be messed up and how to extend it if needed.
Yes the partition will be messed up and there is a way to extend it.

My guide is only for a direct cloning 500gb to 500gb.
Quick question 🙋♂️, does it really matter what ssd I get ? I understand the 500 to 500 gb part, is there a brand I should lean more towards ? I was looking at this 500 gb wd western blue
This is probably the BEST video on the Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2017! 👍 I'd never seen the internal drive before this.
What SSDs do you recommend for replacing the original HDD?
Thanks! ✌
Any SSD works but it does have to be the exact same size.
There is a method for using a larger drive but it's pretty complicated.
Please, my Nvidia Shield's original factory hard drive is bricked, I can't get it back. I bought a Samsung EVO 870 500gb SSD, how do I install this HD from scratch?
I am afraid you might be out of luck. I have had very little luck restoring a unit from a dead drive.
This is copy of my drive with a factory reset. You can use this with the tool I use in the video to write the copy to the drive.
drive.google.com/file/d/1_-FrJIUabluxYk9MmYjWfeT4nNGPImYe/view?usp=drivesdk
From there... I don't know what else you can do.
Sometimes it seems like nothing gets the drive going again once the HDD is dead which is why I strongly emphasize during the video to make a backup before it dies...
Some people have had moderate success getting support through the android forums asking for specific help from some of the gurus there.

Hi can you help me recover my NVIDIA shield pro 2017 500gb my problem is no work the hard drive and I can't clone it I need some images to put in the new hard drive please help me

my hdd is done i cant copy anything from it, what do i do now?
was the original drive also an SSD ? a bit unclear on that one...
the original hdd in the nvidia shield was a HDD/SSD Hybrid mostly HDD which doesn't last. It's not the same as an ssd
I have the pro it says 16gb memory bought it new this year, does it not have the space to upgrade the HD?
The 2019 does not have an internal HDD and can't be upgraded.
I need help. I tried to replace my hhd to a ssd and while trying to clone I got a message saying my hhd had a bad sector. Now I'm stuck. I need a copy of a disk image, can anyone help.
If the program allows you to continue past the bad sector do so it's important that you clone your original disc a image file may not help you at all.
Why is the Nvidia background blue?
Just a brightness issue
@@GGMentor Ahh, I thought you changed the background or something.
Great video.
Is there any way to replace hdd on a non pro 2015 & 2017???
No the non pro models don't have the sata connection at all. I would recommend an external drive using usb if you want to expand storage. I also have another video on how to setup network access between your shield and home computer so you can use Network storage also.
I'm using external sdd via USB now. Thx.
Alternatively you can also use a drive copier which is a hardware device where you put one hard drive and one slot and one hard drive at another and it copies them
@@GGMentor ok I'll have to fire up my old windows machine then 😂 but thank you for the video. I knew someone would have done this sooner or later...Google ads blow
By doing this and cloning my drive to a 500ssd will I lose any streaming abilities? I’ve got the pro 2015 and a spare 500gb ssd so will do it. Just wanna see if there’s any reasons not to.
If you do it correctly the system doesn't even know anything has changed.
But it's going to be a lot faster and a lot more responsive. Also if you have 2015 shield and it's still using the hard drive that it came with it's 5 years old now and hard drives that are 5 years old can die at any moment.
Definitely make a backup copy of your drive just in case things go wrong
@@GGMentor transferring my 500 drive to a new 1tb ssd then hopefully I can plug the nvidia drive via a usb ssd sata connection. Would you advice booting in safe mode for windows 10 to recognise the drive? The new 500gb drive, do I need to format it to anything before hand or use that raw close software?
@@magicgsuk6312 the raw clone software does a bit by bit copy exactly as the original nothing else is required.
Safemode can help remove unwanted interference from other programs.
Also you can't clone from a 500gb to a 1tb drive it doesn't work that way.
It has to be a 500gb exact drive to a 500gb exact drive.
If you want to use a larger then 500gb drive here are the instructions for that. It's a bit more complicated.
www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/237196/guide-migrate-to-ssdhdd-of-any-size-only-for-pro-v/
@@GGMentor no it will be 500gb drive. I’m putting a new 1tb in the pc and removing the old 500gb ssd👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Annoying the SSD I had spare was a 480gb version. I removed the drive and done a raw backup (4gb) image of the nvidia drive. Now if the drive fails before I get a 500gb ssd drive will this image allow me to restore and start a fresh. I’m assuming if I don’t have a backup once the drive fails I will end up with a door stop.
Is this also works on Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019?? Also the system recognized ssd full 500gb storages as internal storage??
The 2019 pro does not have a internal hard disk drive. So unfortunately no swapping out the disk on the 2019 is not possible.
However you can use an external hdd with the 2019 pro edition.
I also have another video up ony channel on how to connect your 2019 nvidia shield tv to your computer by Network so you can use your computers storage.

hello thanks to you I managed to install an ssd in my nvidia shield tv pro from 2017 but the fan does not turn even when putting in cooled mode. Do you know if it is possible to find a fan to replace it? Thank you.
The removal of the hdd starts at 10:00
Ginger, what's a way to com w/ u to do same with mine? Thank you

I make no guarantees I can repair your unit, and I have very little time these days so Don't expect it done in a timely manner.
my hard drive is damaged, i want to replace it with an ssd one. Would you sell me a copy to install it on the new hard drive or is that not possible?
My invidia 500gig shield doesn't pop up on my computer as anything after I swapped the hard drive to a ssd and it is stuck in a bootloop I think. Is there anything I can do to make it work again?
Put the old HDD back in, if it works something went wrong in the Cloning process try again.
If it doesn't work you might have accidentally deleted the HDD instead of cloning it.
Hi... which model is nvidia P2571 correct ?
Hi, great video! Do you know if it's possible to upgrade the bluetooth antenna on this by soldering a 2.4ghz high gain external antenna instead of the original one? Thanks
aren't the antenna's a standard antenna connector? I could be wrong since your specifically talking about bluetooth. But there are several Antenna connectors inside the switch that are of the standard plug and play variety.
Can you possibly do another video starting with d/l’ing the image from Nvidia and then burning on the new ssd please?? And yes, i did double check all of my connections, and still nothing. So i’m wondering if i didn’t format it correctly (FAT32 & so on) before i burned the image?? Please help as my original drive totally died or i would just copy that one. Thank You so much in advance!
I have never been able to go from a blank drive to a working one. Sorry, if your original drive is dead completely you might be sol.
I always copy the original drive onto the new one using raw HDD one then go from there.
@@GGMentor ok, thank you.

Sounds like you might have the European version. I think you have to take two screws out for that version but you may want to reference a guide specifically for the euro model
You have the non pro, 16gb model. Doesn't have a removable ssd, sorry bud
I though shield doesn't work with no more than 500gb !
I always swap it out with the exact same size drive.

What is the turnaround time for replacing to SSD if I send it to you? I have 2 2015 16gb that I'd like to swap to 1tb ssd.
#1 I don't do that
#2 you can't easily change from 512gb to 1tb it fails unless special editing is done
#3 The 16Gb model does not nor can it have a HDD. They are missing the connectors on the mainboard.
After you say "I'll see you on the other side " after going into safe mode I loose volume and your instructions appear on the top right corner. Is this only me? Rewind and same spot??

Try letting it do one boot cycle then as soon as the screen goes black do one 5 second hold and release.

lol this was years ago but yes I did. Don't worry I got it off camera.
So what do you do to hook the drives up to your computer? Buy two SATA to USB adapters?
Most desktop computers have sata connectors. If it's a laptop than yeah your gonna need an adapter. There are clone adapters that have two hdd slots
All good and nice but you fucked up on one part and it´s a major one because you never screwed back that little bracket that holds the hdd/sdd in it place. You only stuck back the silicon bumpers and whoops forgot the bracket!
After I finished the recording I opened it back up and fixed that.
I opened my device and found no HDD
then you don't have the "Pro" Edition 2015 or 2017.
Will a 1 tb work also?
1 TB is a different set of instructions because it's no longer a simple cloning process.

My 2017 Pro is booting up showing Nvidia logo then moving to Andriod bootup animation but never continues. Nothing I've tried can get me by that.
