God im so happy to have found this masterpiece! Its so beautifully composed and your singing was a lovely added bonus! This makes me want to learn how to play the lute
Great vocals, no apologies needed! Playing the lute while singing is awesome and the rapid use of both front and back of your index finger to pluck towards the end is a neat trick. Thanks for the video!
I happen to like the lute strumming. I wonder if there’s another reason it was frowned upon? I’m impressed you can play the lute and sing simultaneously, you must be very skilled.
I think that the instrument as it evolved from the oud which was played with a pick or feather, was seen to be more delicate and required the soft flesh of the finger to play the strings to get the tone the music required. Later music, particularly Spanish music made use of the back of the fingernail to add relishes and was also used for fast passages. But that was used more with the vihuela and guitar as they became strumming instruments a little more. The lute for the most part stayed within that soft plucking territory.
This is not bad at all. Your vocals match the sense of the song and it doesn't matter if they are not picture perfect. I possibly like your version more than the original.
This is spectacular!! I just recently picked up the lute so I’ve been trying to learn as much as possible do you happen to have the tablature for this? Or any tips in general to someone new to the lute?
Hi fellow musician! Great interpretation and playing. I think yours is one of the best versions that I heard so far. And btw you have a wonderful voice, don't apologise ;) P.s.Also, thanks for the help. I wanted to learn this on a lute regardless that I don't have one and that I'm a pianist. I'm using a guitar for the purpose ( sacrilegious I know, right?) and it was easier finding the chords after seeing you play!!
Nicely done! I personally don't like the idea of strumming as a lute player myself and I always try to explain people it just doesn't work with this instrument 😅 But I understand the urge of making fast, loud and catchy songs by series songwriters. Btw, what's your tunning?
Thanks. I actually agree completely and historically, using the back of the finger to hit the strings with the nail was pretty frowned upon. Obviously none of these songs in modern shows were actually written to be played on an actual lute. But I do like the song, so I made a bit of an exception! I'm using standard tuning. 7th course diapason tuned at D.
Awesome! You've managed to retain the song's feel, but bring to it the Lute's character! Sounds great! I'd love to learn to play it myself, do you have tabs for it by chance?
Thanks! I do have some scribbles, but I haven't worked out all of the time signatures etc. I can send you what I have though if you'd like. It's all pretty simple and can be worked out by ear.
@@SamuelSkjoldsang That would be great thanks! I can usually figure it out by ear once I have a baseline. Which platform would you prefer to use to send them?
2 things: 1) I love this. 2) Which lute did you get and what wood is used? (Weird question I know) - Also looking for the best place for a lute strap, what do you use? Any and all help will be great, thanks!
Hi, thankyou very much. The lute is a 7 course travel lute. I believe the wood is ebony for the fingerboard, walnut for the neck. The soundboard on the body is Sitka Spruce and the bowl is made from walnut also. Regarding a strap, I got a lovely Italian classical guitar strap from Etsy I believe, attached to the pegbox by a cord.
Nice perfomance with neat singing. Not gonna lie them songwriters of the witcher franchise both games and series never experienced the lute playing. It's funny somehow that all these bard songs were written for guitars obviously but because of fantasy genre all guitars are replaced by lutes. I bet there could be a rearrangement for witcher songs with pretty much "lutish" notation. Also as a lute player myself I find renaissance lute strumming kind of silly. Why strum when you can pluck and run?🙂
I agree! I don't really like the sound of the strumming of the lute, and from what I've read, historically it was a bit frowned upon, but this song in particular does work quite well with it, like you say, because it was written/played on a guitar!
I also have several songs from both the soundtrack and TV series of the Witcher myself which I have transcribes specifically for lute (and this is the only one with strumming!). You can hear some of the other on my page!
I have a question, where would one possibly get a lute? I play guitar, ukulele, and mandolin so I’m sure I would pick it up pretty fast, but I have no idea where to get one Edit: yeah, so I have a lute now but I have no idea where to get extra strings band 2 of mine already broke...
what lute is that one? I dont know much of lutes but I am thinking in asking a luthier to build me one. the thing is Im not sure what type of lute is the one that it is used in medieval music. its really confusing the types and strings that they have.
Ok so the lute is specifically a travel lute, so it slightly smaller than a regular lute and the pegbox throws itself back at a lesser angle. The string type can be a bit confusing. Traditionally, strings would be made of gut. Which can still be done today and sounds beautiful, but generally we tend to use wound and nylon strings because gut strings tend to detune very quickly and fray quite easily. So we use nylon for the higher tone strings and wound strings for the lower bass strings. Lutes were mostly common in Baroque and Renaissance music. The lute was also common in the medieval period and also came in many shapes and sizes. In fact, for many years the art of making the lute had been lost and luthiers had to look for design schematics in old paintings etc to recreate the instrument. Interestingly the one I use is the exact model used for Joey Batey's lute prop in "the Witcher" netflix show (except they painted the one in the show). Take that as you will. Maybe they thought it looked a bit more portable as a real lute can be more of a sit down and play instrument. (lots of lutenists would rest the lute on a table to play one!)
"I'm not a singer" - proceeds to absolutely astound. Phenomenal playing and singing alike 🌻
You say you’re not a singer, but you’re wonderfully in tune.
Thankyou very much! I've never been fond of my voice, especially singing, but comments like these really make my day!

I must agree that it's a pretty song and thus it should be sung wether the person in question can sing or not. It's a song that mustn't be silent.
