This watch is much more functional without a screw down crown if you are actually using it for travel. As a long haul pilot, I sometimes have to reset my watch 3 times a day. That's a lot of wear and tear on a crown stem. I like to be able to hand wind the watch without unscrewing the crown as well.
Another great video, thanks very much for sharing your thoughts. I was really excited when I heard about the release of this watch, but I can't quite bring myself to pull the trigger. I think the fact that Seiko makes their movements available to other manufacturers (especially microbrands) gives me a sense of future FOMO, if that's a thing. Every time I think about buying this watch I get visions of future microbrand releases using this same movement that I may like better :) I think I'll probably give this one some time and see what else comes out after this.
Oh yeah i totally get what you're saying about future fomo! for me this watch clicked bc i love the SKX design and I'm very much a black dial guy so it worked out nicely but I too think about the future iterations of the SSK that will look great and then thinking about the endless possibilities of this movement in the microbrand world gives me pause! The future is exciting so it makes sense to wait it out!
Great video! I have the black/blue color way. I also own a 007 and a 009. I never picked up a dress KX. I’m really enjoying this model. I understand the majority of the complaints out there such as no screw-down crown, lack of loom on the bezel insert, a friction based bezel and so on. I would have appreciated having all of those improvements. However, I believe this watch is awesome as is. I have no plans of modding it or selling it. With that said… I look forward to the Islander version with all the upgrades. I will be one of the first to pick one up when they drop 😊
Nice one TWI. It really is amazing how much a watch can change just by swapping out the thing that attaches it to the wrist. An old Seiko 5 I purchased many years ago had at best described as a sub-optimal (annoyingly 19mm) bracelet, I swapped it out for a leather band and BOOM, the watch was a major contender for wrist time. The personality of the watch completely changed. I must confess the SSK might just have created a little itch... I already have GMT covered but only true GMT so far.... Time to ponder...
Thanks Anthony! yeah its such a great feeling when you finally find that perfect pairing for a watch and then everything just clicks! I'm so glad i swapped in this BOR bracelet feels and looks great too and like you said the personality changed for the better. I'm not surprised to hear that this watch has created a new itch its almost too good to pass up! I think you'll enjoy it a lot and thankfully the price is good for the experience it offers lol
@@thewatchidiot Another one to add to my watch list. Travelling this week I picked up the PRX Chronograph panda dial. Even though I'm a bit of a loon for symmetry that light dial and light date surround allows it to hide from the spot light. Definitely worth a look if you get a chance, it's not thin housing the Valjoux 7753 but hides it well on the wrist. The finish is way above it's price point like the 3 hand sibling. The new Peleagos could be interesting and is another watch that I'd like to see in the flesh. I'll not be selling my LHD though.
I upgraded my SSK003 with a strapcode presidential bracelet and a lumed ceramic bezel insert for a lot of the same reasons that you talk about here. It was the icing on the cake for me and this watch and the addition of the timer bezel, while unorthodox for a GMT watch, adds another level of functionality for me that I have come to appreciate.
@@MrTheobub Monsterwatches carries them. I personally don't like the typeface of the numbers on the dive bezel, but if a lumed GMT bezel was available I'd definitely think about it.
Great watch and review. Though, I still don't understand why Seiko keeps doing the reverse-lume on the lollipop seconds hand. It doesn't make sense when you see the seconds hand ticking in the dark!
absolutely, strapcode does great work on that end, I'm hoping they make one for the SNE569 because then my life will be complete! In the meantime I'm super tempted to get a king turtle and get a strapcode beads of rice on it
Yeah, I'm returning the Presage cocktail dial I bought yesterday and getting this GMT. This is what my heart wants. And that bracelet is what my heart wants, so I can also use it on my turtle ☺️ ❤️
Fabulous review and video as always. I feel like I will impulse one of these SSKs at some point and I like the beads of rice you put on it from Strap Code! I can't remember if they do a milled clasp on there's or if it's stamped but that would be a nice cherry on top if milled!
Great video it's looking incredible on that beads of rice bracelet and you make a great point about the visual width of it. It really does look thinner than your other bracelets and while the 22mm lug width doesn't bother me as much I think I might give it a go on my blue dial bc it'll look good with this more streamlined look.
Thanks Ed, it lopoks great and its so insanely comfortable so I couldnt possibly ask for me from this bracelet combo! Yeah the streamlined look made a surprisingly big difference especially against the super o boyer bracelet so yeah you should definitely give it a go!
I think the stock ssk jubilee bracelet is better than the strapcode in almost every way. But the rice bracelet it's a different style more feminine or unisex like the Rado bracelets.
I love most of your videos. Reason why is just the monologue about the watch but not in a condescend way but as a struggle to find out the meaning of your own watch. If that is not a part of watch collecting then it's not worthy in my opinion.
I got it here on amazon although its not showing as available: amzn.to/3pRssXg you can get it from strapcodes website, the SSK GMT works with any bracelet that works with the "5KX" or the SRPDs which is the seiko 5 version of the SKX. Its a perfect fit!
@Joram CM I think it might technically work but it would be a loose fit. Unfortunately the new Seiko 5 versions don't use the original Seiko Fatboy spring bars, so the endlinks would be a bit wobbly. That being said strapcode does make an SKX version of this beads of rice bracelet but it's not on Amazon, just their site by the looks of it.
That's actually an interesting question bc I never really thought about it not having clicks which I suppose is pretty telling about how I feel about it. I think the reason it didn't annoy me is bc I subconsciously know that it's not a diver so having a sliding bezel didn't feel out of place. On the other hand, if I had a clickless dive bezel it might have bothered me. Also between a sliding bezel and a 24 or 48 click GMT bezel I would actually prefer this sliding bezel bc I can set it EXACTLY where I want to set it bc most of the time I don't use GMT bezels to track other time zones, I use them as a timing bezel. With fewer clicks I can't time things with it as precisely as I can time things with a dive bezel. All that being said, all the advantages I laid out for a sliding bezel would be for nothing if it was slightly loose and if it moved on its own through things naturally nudging it. The bezel resistance on the SSK GMT is spot on. It's pleasant when turning it, but when it's set, it's not going to move. Oh and all this with zero misalignment issues guaranteed lol😁 I guess in the end liking or not liking sliding bezels is subjective but that's been my experience with it so hopefully I answered your question. Have you tried out the SSK in person before?
@@thewatchidiot thanks for the explanation, I don’t see it in person yet, there’s no available at this moment in my city but there’s an online sale so I can get it with 20% off, a little bit less that 480 something like that
Yeah that one is lightly modded I swapped the SKX007 bezel out for a coin edge steel bezel with the red triangle. The bracelet on that one is a strapcode super o boyer. I love the combo!
It's a handsome looking watch for sure and your bracelet recommendations totally make sense. But a watch at this price point featuring a Hardlex crystal, I simply won't buy.
Seiko had deliberately differentiated their Prospex/Presage line & Seiko 5. With the Saphire, solid bracelets, professional capabilities (water resistance, screw down crown) being only in the Prospex line. Highly doubt they'll ever put Saphire in any Seiko 5 ever.
Your voice volume is really low man. Other videos from youtube is good though. I have to use headphones for your videos bro. Please adjust your video volume
Its "not even" an skx Not iso compliant Only 100m wr Non screw down crown. I mean, the watch is fine and all that but people need to stop trying to convince themselves this is or indeed any of the seiko 5 types is the new skx merely because it shares similar aesthetics.
thats fair enough your points are correct bc they arent the same, but for me i couldnt possibly care less about the SKX's spec sheet points despite my love for all my SKXs! leaving aside the sentimental value of my SKXs if I had to choose between a 5KX and an SKX today I'd choose the 5KX every time because of the drilled lugs and especially for the hacking and hand winding capabilities. I would dive with one of my citizens anyway lol
Depends on what “being and SKX” means to you. I dive, but I never dived with a watch when a computer is so much better - so none of the features you mentioned matter. At the same time the new bezel and hacking + hand winding make it a much better tool and still keep the looks, price and “utilitarianness” that we know and love from seiko.
