I love my fp, mostly for stills. With an MC-21 SA-L adapter I can use my SA-mount Art lenses. I was also waiting for the full-frame Foveon, and we'll see if it ever comes out. I picked up a used LVF-11 'directors viewfinder' which I find very immersive, though it all adds bulk. But I love it. Somehow, it's just joyful to use. -Tom
Ha* I recall your first video expressing trepidation at the slow sync speed associated with no mechanical shutter. Yet the studio shots continue to be astounding. Thanks for sharing your inspiration and support.
Thanks! Yes, I've grown tired of hauling so much gear to locations. The lights, stands, modifiers, etc. , just getting too old for all that LOL. I'm going to do a video soon on that very topic. Great to see you back!
I agree! It's certainly not the camera for everyone but there is value in it. And sometimes it just the design or experience that makes us excited to work with something, and that excitement can turn into passion. Great topic for a future video.
Just discovered the FP series after coming across some output on instagram. I'm lady to the party but am gonna join in on the fun. Hopefully you'll start making videos again!
Such an appealing camera for travel, paired with compact manual focusing M mount lenses adapted to it. I’d be too worried about the rolling shutter though. I do a lot of panning shots.
Good to see another person who talks about fp series and also about foveon. I’m a fan of foveon for long time and still using sd Quattro for all of my photography. I’m still thinking about going for fp series and I hope I make a decision through your videos
Thanks Peter, glad you stopped by. Love that you are still using your Quattro, still use mine from time to time. Trying to keep hope about that mythical full frame foveon, maybe one day :-)
Hi John, I enjoy the fp, and I understand your decision to get the fpL. I was also thinking about getting the fpL recently for the same reason, as mainly a still photography camera. I also like the idea of having a second sigma fp/fpL as a second angle/perspective for video. I exhausted all of the RUclips video watching options, and I have seen everything Sigma fp/L related. I bought the fp as a camera to learn how to be a photographer, to slowly and steadily learn the basics. The Sigma fp is a wonderful camera! I love it! Now that the fpL has a 61mp sensor, it makes me wonder, what is next? Global shutter would be nice, along with IBS and improved autofocus. Ya, I am asking a bit much! In meantime, I have much more to learn. Take care.
I have the DP1x and an SD1 and I love the Foveon look, but it's like Velvia, slow speed and gotta nail the exposure! I think Sigma is 1 step ahead of the curve here, eventually all cameras with be digital shutter and video focussed, especially when you consider that a single frame of 8K video is 33 megapixels! I also like the way the viewfinder can be tilted, and just like tilting touch screens, all cameras will have tilting viewfinders eventually.
Great to see a longtime foveon user! Sigma is not afraid to try new things (something I really admire about them) and often their features are ahead of the curve. They just haven't had enough market share in cameras that can push things forward like Canon and Sony.
Yes! I saw those interviews as well. However, it sounded like the sensor would be available assuming it passes the final phase which is a production challenge. Then they need a camera for it (FP X?). Hopefully we see a camera in 2023 :-)
Great discussion, I also woned the fp and love the video image and the size of the camera. In my day-to-day work, I used the Canon C70 and Canon R6 but when it comes to personal projects I love the experience with the Sigma fp with the I series prim leans. I am just waiting for the EVF-11 (end of July) to make this camera complete for me.
Thank you! I love meeting people who enjoy shooting differently. Great meeting a fellow fp user, look forward to hearing about your experiences as well.
Thanks for producing these videos. I love my fp L and search for videos on it with no luck. Keep them coming :) I would really like to hear your detailed experiences with it's accessories (EVF, I series lenses, etc) as I have not been able to purchase them yet.
Hey Alejandro! This is something I hope to test side-by-side with the fp (which is great in low light). All of my fp L shooting so far has been in good light. I'm expecting a trade-off with the 61M vs 24M. Will upload the results soon.
Hello Carsten, thank you! It is great to see another fp L user. You are correct, it is a design that people either love or hate. Personally I think it's great, but that's just me. :-)
hey john, i have been intrigued by the videos i've seen on the sigma fp. as a still shooter i would like to learn cinema. the sigma looks good for artistic work if not action. wondering of my zeiss lenses from my rollei 35 would be useful, what do you think. if so, i might choose to invest. thank you keep up the good work rjj
interested in the camera but not too sure about how big the evf is as I always use a viewfinder. Really like the ethos of sigma, focus on quality, making in Japan, offering something different... It's charming. So would like to invest. Maybe I just need to try one out somehow, which isn't the easiest
If you can rent one that would be good option. There are a completely different experience and its hard to express that, really need to have one in hand. People love or hate it, not much in-between. The evf is big (ish) so I'm always torn between taking it with me. For studio yes, in the field, sometimes.
I think mechanical shutters will soon be a thing of the past. Hoping for a foveon full frame myself. Sigma has a special place in my heart. In the meantime is the FP good enough for photography or would you recommend the FP-L ? It would be nice to have a view finder. I like low light photos
Agreed. Fuji is claim 1/180000 on the new HX-2. The fp is great for photography. The 24M sensor has enough resolution for most people, the color is great, good low light, and honestly for most applications it can be hard to tell the difference. You really have to be pixel peeping, large printing, or doing big cropping (which can happen) but shouldn't be the norm.
Hey John, great to see another video from you! Really appreciate your thoughtful presentation style. I bought an fp (for photography, funnily enough) and have loved using it even in spite of its flaws. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the fp L as well as the EVF! 👍
Thank you! Yes, the EVF review will be in the next couple of uploads. As a photographer I really do like it, but it does have its quirks. They released the EVF firmware update to support the fp as well as the fp L. Haven't updated yet but will tomorrow. I'll let you know if I see anything odd.
The industry tends to pan Sigma cameras unfortunately.:( sdQuattro fan here. Edit: couldn't agree more about the focus needing to tilt more in favor of an artistic voice.
How do you compare the autofocus between the Fp and the Fp L? I really like my Fp but the autofocus makes using it for birds or spontaneous shots VERY hit and miss. Is the Fp L Improved at all? Using say, Sigma glass for instance? I have also rigged up my Fp for video and use a manual cine lens now with it and a Ninja. Pretty happy with that. But it would be great to have the Fp L for stills if I could count on accurate fast autofocus.
Hi, the fp L definitely has better AF, but as I person who used to shoot sports, I still don't think it's on par with other solutions. Birds are small and really fast! lol. I'm not sure the fp L would give you the results you expect for the money you will spend on it. That said the sensor and Sigma color of the fp L produce sbeautiful images. My suggestion is to rent one before you buy, I would hate for you to have buyers regret.
Can do. One of the more interesting aspects of their differences is related to the different firmware for each camera, rather than the actually physical camera itself.
Still waiting for that next foveon as well. But honestly not looking good at the moment. They discontinued the SD H, broke ties with their foveon manufacturer, and once again missed a development date. The camera market is moving so fast in terms on innovation that unless Sigma releases something soon, or that is is something amazing like a medium format foveon (can you imagine), I'm not sure it will remain relevant. I sincerely hope it does happen because I have really enjoyed my SD H as well.
FP owner. I have no interest in the FP l for the reason you state, diminishing returns from high pixel counts. Really disappointed at the price of the EVF-11. You can buy a very nice second hand camera for that kind of money. Sigma should respect their early adopters. The FP with only a small screen is a compromise. The solve the problem but charge you a premium. My only problem with the FP is that I use it for webcam, video and stills. Each requires a completely different set up, and saving them to profiles I’ve found doesn’t save ALL the settings. So I’ve shot stills and realised my shutter speed was 50 (which I use for 25fps video). Confusing!
I agree that the EVF is expensive, and I also thought the LVF-11 View Finder for the fp was a bit high as well. I believe that for most people 24M is the sweet spot in full frame today, more pixels than most people need with good low light capabilities and less rolling shutter effect. One of the advantages of the 61M is that you can use the digital crop with small lenss as a way to extend reach while still using small, lightweight glass. But is that worth the price? That’s a personal choice. The PD focusing is also a big improvement, but if you are a manual focuser that doesn’t mean much.
Hi John, how would you rate the FP with the Sd Quattro? I have the SD Quattro (I do landscapes mostly but also shoot motorcycles) and would like to get the FP l but cant afford it- is the FP good or better?
The Quattro has its own character and honestly produces images above its sensor size. However, the fp has a great 24M sensor, it is WAY better in low light, and has a native format that all raw processors can handle. Personally I'm a huge foveon fan but for greater range of use, easier processing, and of course video the fp is going to win. However, the Quatttro does have some advantages with flash and mech shudder, this might be an issue with the fp. Remember the fp has an electronic shudder and that can cause issues with moving subjects like motorcycles in motion. rolling shudder effect. This could be a deal breaker for you. The fp L has better focusing and resolution. For most people the fp has more than enough, but for focusing the fp L is better. However, when trying to get moving subject, like motorcycles, the slow AF and mechanical shudder would not be the best solution.
Not yet, but Sigma did say it is in the last stage of prototype and will be testing for production viability. If that passes the sensor will be available in 2022. Even if this happens they still need a camera for it, so best case is sometime in 2023. maybe... lol Interesting enough the SD H is slightly larger than an APS-C sensor (APS-H), not by much but enough that the SD H takes FF glass.
I love my fp, mostly for stills. With an MC-21 SA-L adapter I can use my SA-mount Art lenses. I was also waiting for the full-frame Foveon, and we'll see if it ever comes out.
