Swifties vs. Ticketmaster

- Even before the recent Taylor Swift ticket snafu, Ticketmaster and its parent company, the concert promoter Live Nation Entertainment, have been criticized for controlling 70% of the big concert ticket market, leaving fans and artists nowhere else to go. Live Nation is now being investigated by the Justice Department, and last month was called to testify before a Senate anti-trust subcommittee. Correspondent Rita Braver talks with Sen. Amy Klobuchar; with an attorney who has filed a lawsuit against Ticketmaster; and with disappointed Swifties - fans of the pop star who can't "shake it off."

Not only do they control the big shows but also local events. I just had my first experience with Ticket master when I tried to get tickets to a local event. I was not impressed. I had the same experience in getting kicked off even though it was a much smaller event. Never again. There are so many excellent artists in smaller venues who need to be supported and that is where my money will go.
Break the monopoly
Pearl Jam tried to fight this and lost. I hope things change this time around
I remember. But Pearl Jam didn't have rich suburban soccer moms on their side. Let's hope this works. Imagine if these kids had had to get that news after physically waiting outside the store for tickets, as we often did.
Agree with Linda. Remember McDonald's used to sell their burgers in Styrofoam. A whole bunch of teenage girls and their mommas changed all that.
Kids today do not know of Pearl Jam, that's grandma and grandpa's music to them.
My last experience with ticket master was an attempt to buy a ticket to a Paul McCartney concert in June 2022. What is so ironic about this is that when I was 10 yo in 1965 I went to the second Beatles concert in a stadium and my parents paid $5 for my ticket. I know inflation over decades would make the price higher, but the best ticket I could afford was $800 for Paul. And to make it worse, the concert was in Knoxville, Tenn and the other costs such as the hotel would have cost me about $800. If I were to pay that much for a concert, it would be for Paul McCartney. Unfortunately, I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth. 🙂
Haven’t been to a concert in years, partially for this exact reason as well as the outrageous prices and then rip off concessions. But this has always been this case. This was not an isolated incident.
I haven't been to a concert because I'm not religious. And going to a concert is akin to attending church. You go there to worship your God.
I WANT MY SLAW!! KNEEL PLEBE!!
Bravo...many years ago when Pearl Jam went on tour...ticketmaster was ruthless..I hope the attorneys get justice..amended. Long over due.
A huge step would be for Ticketmaster to make it where you can't resell a ticket for more than the face value. It's absolutely ridiculous how many pink dots (verified resell tickets) show up on Ticketmaster within a couple days of them going on sale, and for 5-10 times the face value. The fact that they won't make this one simple change shows that they are double dipping and profiting off the scalpers.
It's the reason Pearl Jam stopped touring (big venues) years ago. They were one of the first bands to call Ticketmaster out.
It was a matter of antitrust violations for Ticketmaster and LiveNation. The monopoly must be broken from this day forth.
Monopolies used to be illegal. But now they're everywhere. Not just ticketmaster. But Amazon, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Apple, etc.
@@I_WANT_MY_SLAW Not to mention Xbox and Playstation
Break it up! It’s ridiculous that I have to pay $200 for a general admission ticket. It’s ridiculous!
No entertainer is worth that kind of money!!! Some of these performers chk 1K for a back stage pass......that’s ridiculous too. Stay home and watch their concerts on utube😅
Ticket master is a monopoly- they have no competition so they are big headed. I won't support them. Haven't been to a concert in many years now. Shame too
I love Taylor Swift
I'm so glad to see that people have spoken! And the Congressmen and women are working together with this. It is so UNFAIR to the middle or low income family trying to let their children to have any concert or ballgame experiences having to pay outrageous prices for them!! Enough is enough.
Ahh first world problems...
Beg to differ Music is worldwide. All nations have famous music interpreters that travel the world performing! It’s a gift not just one country owns it.
I want to be able to buy tickets where the fees are less than the ticket itself!
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Yes, Pearl Jam was barely mentioned in the story, but did they miss a HUGE opportunity. I am NOT a fan of Eddie Vedder's or Pearl Jam, but I will say I had nothing but respect for Vedder in 1995. A lot of the points he was making back then, are the same thing that's STILL going on today. Rolling Sone did a story, it was on the world news for a day or two, then it just all disappeared. Vedder and Pearl Jam paid the price by Ticketmaster not willing to work with them on their next couple of tours. Which did great damage to the band. And yet, in 2023 Vedder is on tour and guess who's handling the tickets for this tour. They really should have talked to Vedder for this story. Oh, the good old days of getting in line days ahead of time and camping out for your tickets. Then, when Ticketmaster moved into record stores, and for big shows you'd have to go in, days before the sale and get nonremovable bracelets with numbers on them, then, day of the sales, the manager would pull a number out of a box, and everyone with a bracelet would line numerically behind the luck number pulled. My mother would have NEVER bought me tickets to a show. I had to earn my own money, I had to get myself to the venue to buy my own tickets. Remember when you could skip the service charges by buying your tickets at the venue having the show. To think in twenty odd years, these kids whining and pouting about mom not being able to get them tickets are going to be running the country.
HS Taylor got cardigan and locket merch.
and everybody else got 1" buttons and stickers and tshirts.
Never before is the independent music scene vs the establishment music scene more apparent in... class?
Ticketmaster shouldn’t be allowed to host the resale of tickets. The bots buy them, quadruple the price, them put them back on Ticketmaster to flip on resale. And of course Ticketmaster gets a part of those sales, too.
These girls need to go outside and touch some grass.
Hahaha
I have a perfect example of this: I'm going to see comedian Matteo Lane in MSY the end of this month (March '23) and his tickets were hosted by Ticketmaster/ Live Nation. With fees the ticket came out to $45. They're Orchestra seats too! Looking at his dates in Seattle, WA for the same seating location they were over $400!!! Such a scam on TM's end!
They get paid twice on the resale aspect and allow a black market that only rich people can afford. Crooks!
Yes! I’m all for capping prices!!!!
The real problem is that people are buying tickets and then reselling them for 10x face value. Fans suffer because of greedy people. Ticketmaster should put a cap on how much tix can be resold for. It’s gross!
Who will take on NY's Spectrum Cable??!
Tickemaster always had a booth and ticket fees. Now it's on-line pog mon hon
Ticketmaster needs to break up from live nation
Don't know what's worse, Ticket Master violations or the spoiled, entitled girls. This would have been a great opportunity for Mom to teach these young girls, this is life. As they grow up they will face many challenges and disappointments in life. The long, depressed, and emotional faces after the lengths mom went through to find them tickets was better saved for REAL things like a death in the family.
They're white. They will never understand the harsh realities of life.
Death is inevitable. Abuse doesnt have to be. These Women are learning to stand up to mistreatment. A much more important lesson than any concert ticket issue. & Yes, they are entitled to expect a life where abuse is not so widely accepted. Your notion that "these things happen" & are to go unchecked, is irresponsible. The days of sacrificing girls are soon over. Go mourn
@@yourturn777 Abuse? Sacrificing? bwahahahaha, hardly, Over stupid tickets to a concert? First world problems for sure.
@@yourturn777 What you smoking?
They should've sued Taylor Swift
SO ANGRY ewwww swifes vs ticket master win
AOC will cry. ALSO who owns the servers that ticketmaster use? AWS?
Ticket master/ Live nation is to big to powerful and to corrupt it's a Monopoly and needs to be broken up unfortunately that's not going to happen
I am commenting #BringBackDislikes on every unique RUclips video that I watch for the rest of 2024, regardless of if I actually dislike the video or not. This is video 1256.
Swifties vs scooter! ✊🏼 Its about time Women are finally standing up to mistreatment & disrespect!! So widely accepted for the men holding the purse strings. 🎉🎉🎉
Spare us with your wannabe feminism. Read a book.
Taylor Swift is one thing, and I wonder what would happen if Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Gwen Stefani, or Blake Shelton had the same feeling?
We are about to find out with Beyoncé tickets.
Poor little rich girls!
Still, Ticketmaster needs to be the investigated!
First world problems.
Nah, rich kid problems. Kids who saved their babysitting money maybe.
True. & First world YOUTH.
Most "worlds" enjoy music, & thank God. At least theyve a taste of standing up to crap. Some of these kids may just grow up to promote change, for the good of society. I support them in their learning process, & Pray for their success in many more important fights. Theyve a little experience now, & are encouraged to promote change, & hopefully for the benefit of the whole world?
Literally what I was thinking the entire time. Who cares 😂
By the hair of my chinny chin chin I was able to get tickets for her July 15 show for my friend Brooke and I. I have a lot of sympathy and feel really bad for those that got robbed of being able to see her! The World is going to learn not to mess with us Swifties. Look at us and mama Tay changing history, making history, starting investigations, bringing Republicans, and Democrats, together. It was ridiculous, Ticketmaster robbed people in more ways than one.
This is another reason people hate corporations
Nest
Biden going to fix it tho but servers keep report ur tips n venom deposits over $600

America loves oligarchy and monopoly (those who give tons of funds to the politicians) while talking about "competition" From grocery stores, to buying tickets, to technology companies, to radio stations, to hardware stores, to consumer necessities (3 companies own about 75 brands), to telecom companies etc. As long as you fund their campaigns all you have to do is show up at Congress for a dog and pony show every 5-6 years and say "I'm sorry" and then the circus continues. America!
Oh look the Swifties! The fallacy is that you've been wronged by Ticketmaster. You create your own mess by having a frenzy for this show you just have to see. Try broadening your horizons and get off the teeny bopper bandwagon and experience a show that has more depth and artistic value than a silly pop show. Doesn't matter if it Swift or any other pop act, just find music that isn't so pop and you won't have this problem.
Color me unimpressed by Klobachar or any of those in DC; not mentioned in this piece--or hardly any articles on the criminal monopoly of Ticketmaster--is the fact that anyone who knew ANYTHING about concerts/music industry was begging the Obama DOJ to NOT approve their merger with Live Nation. But, the same DOJ that did not prosecute one SINGLE bankster from Wall St. who caused the greatest economic collapse in modern times, went right ahead & approved Ticketmaster's merger...making their monopoly permanent and complete. Kudos at least to Swift for stating publicly her opposition to their evil ways--unlike a certain billionaire NJ "voice of the working man" who openly & happily embraced Ticketmaster's "dynamic" pricing.
Some of you kids never camped outside several days in lousy weather with bad food, good friends, great drugs, and no toilets in order to procure tickets. You bought them from your smart device while wearing pajamas in your kitchen sipping a latte. And it shows. It really freaking shows!
You must feel so cool because you were born in the 50s because it shows. It really freakin shows.
Anybody that is a open Taylor Swift fan that isn’t a teenage or college girl is just flat out embarrassing themselves and this country.
Calm down hater
"And this country"
Capitalism 🤔💬.....
So we have congress investigating ticket sales when there are many more pressing issues. Anyone obsessed to see an idol needs to spend their ticket money to seek psychological help. Unfortunately the health care industry is overpriced. Maybe healthcare would be a better topic for this show and Congress. Keeping the public entertained is a great way to distract from the real issues. Standing in line to protest Ukraine War funding, healthcare, borders, education would be a better direction. Unfortunately, the people in charge are focusing on what bothers them the most and are buffered from the realities of normal people.
Charging that much money for bland, entitled teen music is just wrong! Shame Ticketmaster!
