he is pretty much the only one surviving that could fit in with some of the greats . I grew up listening to Ernie Harwell - baseball not the same without.

I was never a big baseball fan but all my childhood my dad would have his pocket A.M. radio on with Vin Scully calling Dodgers games. He'd always tell me "this guy's a legend" and I still remember the feeling of cool summer nights in central California when my parents are grilling some steaks and drinking and just chilling listening to the game. Now we're still lucky enough to have icon Al Michaels calling NFL games. He looks great, hope he can pull off another decade in the booth!

I grew up in Phoenix, hated the Dodgers, listened to their games on the radio because Vin Scully made every game sound like baseball was meant to be. He will always be the best.

As a kid I had a radio on late one night. Over a 50K Clear Channel AM station I got a Cincinnatti Reds broadcast at our home in Upstate New York. I actually thought Vin Scully was doing the game. As Al mentioned he lived both in Brooklyn & California so he would have grown up on Vince.
My dad used to tell me there was a lot of Red Barber in Scully, as there would become a lot of Scully in Al Michaels.
In the NY area, those of us, of a certain age, can attest that there was a lot of Marty Glickman in Marv Albert, etc.

I was going to school in St. Louis back in 1987. And I got World Series tickets Cards vs Twins. I had to go to a hotel in Ladue to pick them up. While at the hotel I was directed to a private conference where two men were sitting at desk with what looked like thousands of tickets in multiple stacks. In this room there was a large wrap around couch like thing that sat about 20-25 people. The couch was full of every big named sports announcer of that day anyone could think, all of them, and they were all watching Pro-wrestling, hooting and yelling at the screen. They all invited me to have a beer and hang a bit, it was great.

@@doublek321 Great names: Vin Scully, Al Michaels, Bob Costas, Harry Carrey, Jack Buck, Dick Enberg, Curt Gowdy, Marv Albert, Jim Mckay, Joe Garagiola, Tim Carver, Bob Uecker. I am sure there were more, I just can't remember. No exciting stories I was just a punk college kid that was speechless and remember having a hard time not staring. But they were all having a great time and were very friendly.

Radio isn't as appreciated unfortunately. I know with Denver Bronco games, id rather listen to Dave Logan on the radio calling it most of the time than what is on TV.

Vin Scully is the greatest announcer in baseball. Is Al Michaels the greatest announcer in football? I think so because he's still going!
