@@sawmanUK probably poorly. i played it back when it launched. it's basically a old school text MUD with a crude graphic representation of the world added on. interaction with the graphical world is very very basic. You're pretty good at making an entertaining video about old games though.
I loved this game, I loved the Matrix and this game just brought that world to life, they tried something new and in my opinion it worked, I used to love spending the day talking about this game at school with friends only to rush home and jump straight into a Ventrillo server to play the game all night with them! great video, thanks for the nostaligia trip!
I played in both beta and live, yes it wasn't your standard MMORPG, but I still loved it (its the martix duhh) and hated it ( so many bugs) at the same time but I found my 1st real sense of belonging to a game community and guild through it, I always check on the discord in the hope there has been a breakthrough with reverse engineering the game, I live in hope :)
Was interesting in that it had actual actors playing the parts of npcs and logging on for events. I remember when they made the female agent as an ambassador to the humans and she was out dancing with everyone.
They were like real life dungeon masters, kinda like how Steven Sharif is RP'ing in Ashes of Creation during the Alpha testing. Maybe more modern MMOs will start to do this again?
@@thepopmanbrad I think the issue is that it lost a lot of popularity over the years. So essentially you are pulling from a smaller community to try and reinstate it, compared to games like City of Heroes or Star Wars Galaxies
Good script and presentation, I wasn't sure that I needed to learn about this MMO that totally passed me by 15+yrs ago, but your storytelling made it compelling. It's unfortunate that The Matrix Awakens wasn't developed.
I'd be curious to see you play Wyvern, it was a top-down 2d MUD-ish MMO from 2001 that's currently playable on phones/steam and has really weird dedicated fans.
Played both beta and live back in early 2005, did it have problems, yes. Balance with hackers versus other abilities was a problem early. Events were somewhat cool like return of Neo or morpheus story. Agents though, couldnt be beaten and I wanna say they were like level 255 or something ridiculous. But I miss the game, probably be much better today.
this mmo was great, i remember the kung fu was o.p., and randomly running into agents was insane. The shutdown event was one-of-a-kind. long dead mmo but not forgotten!
This game was amazing, during the beta, after it launched it was a big disappointment. Also, the ending you showed was for the beta ending, not the game. The ending of the beta was actually really cool. There was a virus that players were actively avoiding for as long as possible and the sky turned into crazy eyeballs.
Yo, try a Korean mmo called MixMaster online. It was the my first MMO, I was 6 when I played it and it is one of my favorite MMOs, even it being one of the worst p2w I've ever seen. But still fun tho.

No mention ever of anarchy online, which came out after swg and before wow. It was by far the best mmo, which is now dead. The ability to play for free is there, you just don’t have access to the expansions.
3:13 Everyone says ESO is dead, I just checked and steamdb had them at 16k+ players this last month😂. That must be one of the most not dead mmos for this channel haha
Well one is a mmo the other a single player game do you expect eso to look like Skyrim? Etc etc 20 years and people still can’t grasp this basic concept
The thought process is hard to comprehend, in what world would the Matrix make for a good MMO... its a nice idea but at the time delusional. Still delusional to this day, just an interesting thought that people thought it was a good idea. The matrix is an on rails story it really doesn't sit well with player choice. (ironically)
i will remake it and call it The Nexus: Revelations: Online and it will be about npcs trapped in you're're computer they're played by Indians and if you pay microtransaction they will be "freed" and the real indian will come to your house. Good?
maybe next time if thw game isnt funktional and there are no quests or combat in the game say that at the beginning of the video instead of wasting 11min of my time, as soon as you said that i wasnt interessted anymore and felt kinda tricked from you into watching so long -.- video wasnt bad bc of that, you have great editing skills! but i came to see you play the game, and finding out you can only run around and look at the world i was honestly dissapointed /:
No worries, I appreciate the honest feedback. The issue with a lot of private servers is that they can be in all sorts of states of completion. For instance Wildstar I did a video on, but the questing and dungeons just arent there, a long with a lot of other aspects, but its still fun to talk about. I'll keep your feedback in mind for the next dead mmo though. :)

Meridian59 is a MMO released by 3DO in 1996 and you can still play it today.

The Matrix Online was my first MMORPG. I literally played it every day from release to close. I still miss it. 😢

I really wish matrix online fully comes back from what ive seen the MXOEMU has barely any of the content
It's still being worked upon, so there is hope for it yet.

I saw this in a magazine in Tesco once and that was the last I saw of it. They're definitely gonna revive this one day in some shape or form.
It's a shame because the premise is soooooo good but i guess making a world that replicates the real world in a mmo, is easier said then done..

Audio is really really low, which has happened before. I had to turn the TV way up.
