It isn't the difference between dry and wet wood. It is the direction of the grain. That could be bone dry and it won't split out easy like it does when you do the same thing when the grain is oriented 90 degrees different.
I’ve done a few horizontally. Hardest part is def hollowing it out. I put one screw in so I can rotate the door (floor in you house) so u can clean it out….
After you got the 1st part of the hole saw done.. you could have taken some coals and let the burn 🔥 thier way down. That’s the way the Indians cut out logs to make canoes 🛶
That is awesome. Thank you very much for this video, can't wait to make one.
The birds will appreciate it!
It was worth the effort to hollow the log out instead of screwing several peices together. The chickadees have moved in!
Did house sparrows invade? If so, reduce the entry hole to 1 1/8". Chicadee can enter a hole that small.
@@brianbeidle8520 when the chickadees were done bluebirds moved in. We don't have many sparrows around

Great job there
very cool.......like
Thanks!
Do you make these for people?
I do not. I turn any scrap wood I can into bird houses. They are my pest control bird army
They're for birds.
I also use green wood. Each time i try to make a cup,it always cracks after i get the inside dug out.
I guess leaving the bark on would help??
Green wood wants to dry. Green wood will crack easier. It's best to use seasoned wood
It's usually humid here so mine is still doing great. The bluebirds love it

Ive got a few new tricks to try. I don't clean them out. I noticed birds will use old nests.
Thanks.
Youre welcome!
Use the chain saw to hollow it out
That's the plan for the next one!

I did think about that but I was worried the fire might not burn evenly. Might have to try it now! Thanks
Ridiculously difficult, watch others who saw it out.
"birdhouse from a log in3 cuts" then 2 hours of hollowing out.
It was as only 1 hour and 59 mins of hollowing
