From the reading I've done, leaving the light on is a common theme. The poor people of North Korea do not have electricity, running water or sanitation. North Korea appears dark during the night hours while China is ablaze with neon lights - those who have suffered under the Kim dictatorship feel soothed by well-lit homes. I've sure learned a whole new meaning to counting my blessings reading the books written by defectors & their journeys to freedom.

@@gaseivs - I find it sobering to think that only in 1994-1998 > 3 million people starved to death in Korea. Even today the poor of NK eat mainly frozen black potatoes... Many in the Military starve to death or have on-going health issues due to the appalling lack of nutrition. Malnutrition is an on-going problem since the withdrawal of assistance from the Soviet Union & the country's economy is drained by the greed of Kim Jong-Un (who is the only obese man in the country he terrorises). If you're really interested, it really is worth reading some of the books written by defectors such as "The Girl with 7 Names" & "In Order to Live" or follow Yeomni Park here on YT. I can guarantee you will be shocked, saddened & enraged by what you learn of their suffering. I think these books should be on the curriculum of every school for the children in the last year of their education... If they were read & understood then entitlement, consumerism & lack of thankfulness would be put into perspective. Even at my age (I'm old as dirt) it has opened my eyes to a world I thought had died away centuries ago.

Watching these has given me a great respect.for the people who have escaped and I really feel for people who haven't. I would love to visit S. Korea some time.

Short and not so relevant fact: I think the reason why the South Korean army didn't give the defectors food immediately is mainly because of refeeding syndrome. If you have gone for days with very little nutrition and then have a sudden high uptake, your body can have a catastrophic shift in fluids and electrolytes. These can cause hormonic and metabolic changes that can lead to health complications.

@@LokiNegus That's true but when a NK soldier defects, the SK army has no idea what his health situation is. They have probably had issues with starving NK soldiers in the past so it's just policy to get a doctor to look at them first just to be careful.

I had a grandpa who was a P.O.W. in WW2. He did escape and made it back to the American lines. The Red Cross were handing out donuts and coffee. And they really weren't monitoring them as one of the former P.O.W.s, not my grandpa, went through the line more than a dozen times to get food. All that food, when he had been starving before ruined his stomach and the man did die because of it. So, yeah that is a legimitie health concern.
The fact that the soldiers who literally saved their lives from a regime got 30 days of vacation makes me heart happy :’)

Yes coz soldier guarding the area will most likely stay there for about 6months or a year waiting for the other platoon that will take over the area of responsibility.

It is also a public/private nightmare for the South Korean troops as they show weaknesses to the border fences. These two young men wanted to defect and imagine if a whole company were able to breach the South Korean defenses through the same means. The North Korean defectors had a long interrogation process to make sure they are not spies. All in all, glad they are in South Korea and enjoying a more normal life. They are also brave to be able to show their faces on RUclips as they might be "marked" men in the future.

Those pamphlets really made a difference. I find it so cool how South Korea manages to get information about the outside world to North Koreans.
I remember when they were on the news releasing the balloons with leaflets and the bottles with usb sticks being cast out into the water in hopes they reach somone in North korea. Its nice to see that it worked like it was supposed to.
As a former American soldier I would just give these guys a hug and tell them they are safe now.

@Eli If I remember correctly they don’t hide it, they tell wherever he is from that he was brainwashed and defected to evil South Korea.
And then if he has family like kids or a wife I think they get executed, and then parents and other relatives get sent to forced labor camps. They use it to set an example and discourage others from defecting.

I am a retired Special Operations US Marine i served in both Force Recon and MARSOC i saw Combat in Somalia, Haiti, Kosovo as well as doing 2 Combat deployments to Iraq and 3 Combat deployments to Afghanistan. I would like to say that you are 2 very Brave Men. What you did to escape North Korea is absolutely incredible. I am glad that you are both well and safe and i pray that you remain well and safe as well as becoming prosperous in your lives. I have much respect for the both of you and commend you for your Courage and bravery.

@@juliedavis9659 It's a lighthearted comment and I truly do understand what happens along the DMZ. The citizens of the Republic of Korea of Uncles and Aunts still alive on the other side. Despite the ridiculous behavior of the NK soldiers with the furniture and what not inside the conference buildings, RoK still respect and invite with open arms.
Of course I know they have to check to make sure there aren't suicide runners and attacks issued by the NK. It's happened before--especially in the 60s.
So again, just a light hearted comment that I felt shouldn't have to be explained or get these types of replies.

There are many North Koreans who are adopted temporarily by retired American families in their 50's.
These Americans take care of them, till they complete their college degree.
You can also do that. It's kind of like a one way student exchange.

If they know who the soldiers were that escaped; their families are either dead, or surviving the rest of their lives in a prison/torture camp.

@@MichaelDeSanta. that's not exactly true. I saw an interview of a North Korean defector I forgot her name anyway she said that her father and the rest of her family still live in NK. They don't harm defectors families if the defector don't speak out against NK publicly that would be a direct threat to the government. Only then their families would be arrested and sent to prison or get executed. However, I'm not the right source I say you google but that's what I heard atleast. Also I think this many people wouldn't defect leaving all of their families lives in danger.

Leaflets like these are probably the best way for South Korea to disseminate information to the N.Korean people . Majority of N.Koreans grew up having no TV at home so they're pretty accustomed with reading newspapers cos that's all they ever had . The power of the leaflets over them is as strong as it used to be for the people of Germany and France during WW2 , back when that practise was first used by the Allies' forces . Just imagine how thought provocative and impressive the imagery of the leaflets must've been for these guys to abandon everything and risk their lifes , fleeing towards a country they haven't even seen before . It's like the South is using North Korea's weapons to turn them against them

Being fat in North Korea is a status symbol. People look up to you if you're fat. Women want you if you're a fat man. So, Kim's not feeling it. He loves being fat.
18 hours of walking?! I can't imagine what was going through his head. Regretting his decisions, not knowing exactly where he was going. Asking himself if he made the right decision. At the same time walking for that long could've motivated him to keep going and never turn back. The taste of freedom overwhelmed that of fear. Happy to see them doing well!

Yes and also from seeing the leaflets found out that Kim Jong-un is in fact brainwashing them and telling them complete lies about the rest of the world, basically making them believe that North Korea has it better than anywhere else. When in actual fact it's the complete opposite.

So that the citizens hold their loyalty to their country for as long as possible (when the regime are fully aware of what life is like outside NK and have experienced it themselves even) and execute those who get caught trying to escape.
Oh and a lot of the executions are carried out publicly to install fear which also helps to ensure the citizens continue to stay loyal.

@Luca Damian That's an out-dated law. The generational law doesn't apply in the DPRK, anymore... that was under Kim Jong-Il, which is where most defectors produce these claims from.

It is both joyous and sad to hear the desperation to escape all they had ever known, to hope for something better, to disconnect with family and good friends for a dream. The North Korean people that I have seen on the internet and listened to are amazing people, but they will always have grief from loss of family. Everyone in the free world hopes for their success, for them to make new wonderful friends and for them to find love in their adopted country.

As an American, I would gladly help sponsor trips for NK defectors to visit the US and allow them to stay in my residence for free should they wish to do so. People who have suffered from the brainwashing like this should be given an opportunity to see the full story, and it could help to benefit them if they were allowed to see that American are not the total evil they have been told. Rather, they can see our culture truthfully and experience the nation in full.
We Americans are loud and lauded especially now, but many of us are still welcoming to all.
While this may not apply to those above, it may apply to those in future!

@@kz03jd There's a fairly cheap and easily available device in NK called a "notetel". It's kind of like those portable DVD players we had in the 90s, but has slots for CD, USB and SD cards. It's like a multimedia player. It's estimated that at least 50% of people in urban NK have one hidden somewhere. There's also a more expensive NK made power-tablet that's like an ipad with the same slots. Like a computer-tablet.

As an American, I really don't think we appreciate what others go through to be free. I was fortunate enough to have had my grandfather in my life for a long time. He fought in both WWII (the Philippines and Occupied Japan) and also in Korea. I learned alot from him. I even have this flag he had from Korea that they gave out to service men. It is blue with a black Korean tiger on it, thanking UN and US troops. Most people don't realize that technically the Korean War is not over. There was never a treaty signed, just a cease fire agreement. Got to be the longest cease firemin history. I can not imagine what these young men went through but I'm glad they got out.

This is both sad and also so very beautiful. I was really touched by this story as a privileged American. These are tough times during covid lockdown in my state where my wife and I both lost our jobs and the future is very scary for us right now but seeing stories like these help me try to stay positive and know somehow if these NK military defectors can keep a bright outlook on life after leaving everything they knew behind, then my wife and I also should keep a bright outlook on life and just trust that if we stay diligent we too can overcome that which seems to be insurmountable at the moment. Thank you for sharing your stories it’s things like this that help remind us all that we’re human and we’re not so different when it comes to our thoughts and feelings regardless of where we were born or what we look like. Human suffering will always be a shared experience although our suffering may look different the feeling is the same.

Yes. South and North Korea don't consider themselves split like the rest of the world considers them, North Koreans once they get to South Korea are automatically granted citizenship. Anyone born on the Korean peninsula is considered a South Korean citizen.

@Patricia D.L. naw its not that as long as the man doesn't show his real name he's fine and so is his family maybe he just likes wearing sunglasses i know plenty of people that wear sunglasses all day even indoors just like how there's people who wear hats weather its hot or cold but he's very much fine as long as his real name is safe.
