People in the comments concluding that "you gain chunks faster" aren't looking at the bigger picture. Money is also chunks and increasing these percentages ultimately comes down to efficient farming. (since scrubbing is not free) Is it worth spending 1 million coins for a set of clothes to gain a mere 10% more experience? Let's do some maths: 1 million coins is 50 scrubs, amounting up to 150 chunks. A 10% increase would mean that in the time you would normally grind to 9 full slots of abilities, you would now have almost 10 instead. The last game you play to fill the third slot of each piece will probably "overflow", wasting that gear experience. Anyways, let's say 11 in the time you normally gain 10 ability chunks. You would have to farm 1500 chunks to break even with the 1 million coins you've spent on 5 star gear. We'll go with 3 pieces of gear, all starting at 0 EXP, without any modifiers. With a drink active, you get about 1340 gear EXP for a Turf War loss and 2310 for a Win with 5-star gear. Filling 3 slots takes 24000 EXP, or 14 games at a 50% win rate, averaging at 1825 gear EXP per game. 1500 chunks, divided by 9 puts us at 167 pieces of gear maxed out/scrubbed. 167 pieces of gear * 14 games = 2338 games. Remember that little problem with the EXP overflow when you hit 3 slots? You would waste an average of 1550 gear EXP once you reach 24000 gear EXP (14 * 1825 = 25550), so effectively, 259K (167 * 1550) of gear experience, and thus 97 chunks (6.5%) are lost in the process of farming those 1500 chunks, reducing your 5-star gear's efficiency from +10% to +3.5%. You will need to play 2338 games, or 117 full hours (without counting disconnects and lobby time) and spend 3.4 million coins or 167 Super Sea Snails on scrubs to break even on upgrading 3 pieces of gear to 5 stars.
I feel like it's something you'll do eventually not something you'll do right away, remember these games are going to get support for 2 years that's plenty of time to get loads of cash and eventually you'll have a surplus, also the XP modifiers could get improved in updates
I exclusively use the witch hat for Last Ditch Effort and the small crown for Comeback, so I'm actually tempted to 5* the witch hat over the next few splatfests just to get me more chunks as I play. Also for bragging rights
You know that you can modify the main abilities on gear, right? Everyone I know including me has had a buildup of ability chunks because they are significantly easier to farm now.
@@plaidhatter1674 Man/Woman likes the Witch Hat. It’s like how for me, my favorite non amiibo gear is the 18K Aviators and the Howdy hat, so I been trying to max those out (plus being a splaying main means I need A LOT of Run Speed chunks to get it for my Ninja Hood.
I would also take into consideration losses or regular wins. You can probably lose a few games and still level up your gear in the same number of matches.
It would save you 1 game per 3 slots of gear, if all your current pieces are 5-star. Each piece costs 350K to 5-star, so that's 1 million coins to save yourself a single game per 0->3 slot run. For 1 million coins, you could simply play 75 games at a 50% winrate and scrub the first slot on a 2-star piece of gear every time it fills up to farm more quickly farm 50 chunks in under 4 hours.
@@ItsNotEsuna i think you would either use sea snails for star power or use cash in the very late game. Otherwise it's only worth it to upgrade till 2 stars.
@@ineophobe but rerolling slots is even more wasteful and using sea snails is the only way to upgrade amiibo gear. Also 5* gear can make it easier to farm chunks.
@@youssefbencheikh8637 I agree that using them to reroll is a waste but it costs 35 sea snails to get ONE piece of gear to 5 stars, you would have to play thousands of games to get more value from that than just spamming reroll
There's a badge for each brand that's earned via total star level of items in that brand. The small one is 30 levels and the big one is 100. While you can probably get the first one just getting things to 3 stars, so just the level costing 50k, I think you need to get some items to 5 stars for each brand to have a shot at the second one. Though I haven't looked at the number of items in each brand to calculate the minimum levels needed to get the 100 level brand badge. So whether or not you're shooting for every badge is another consideration on how worth it this is for you.
It's worth noting that each brand will get more gear as time goes on, making getting the badges much less expensive if you wait. I get the sentiment, though.
@@VMan776 looking at just forge in splatoon 2 it ended with 38 pieces of gear, counting off of the wiki, which means if you have every piece you need 28-30 pieces of gear at at least 3 stars to get the 100 badge. Most of which you probably have no intention of using so debatably you may want to get the ones you like most in the brand and might actually use to 5 stars instead.
It's abysmal how small the multiplier is considering how much you have to spend to get it, I genuinely thought it would be a massive bonus, but not even a 2x multiplier on 5 stars is wack. I hope that Nintendo tweaks these multipliers later on
So in summery, if you're a gambling addict, 5 stars is not worth it.. if you love locker decorations, it's not worth it, if you love buying every single clothes, it's not worth it...... For me, I care about none of this.. I'm done buying new clothes, as it's time to grind out the chunks, so 5 stars is so worth it for gear I grind out... I'm also choosing to max out clothes EXP instead of scrubbing, because it saves me money.. plan on doing a lot more scrubbing during the next splatfest for all clothes since I'll have a lot more cash by then.
It’s way better and money efficient to grind out chunks by buying different gear with the correlated brands w/ a ticket along with Salmon Run than spending all those resources for slightly faster chunk drops.
Probably still more efficient to just scrub your gears when grinding chunks tho It takes $350,000 to max out a gear to 5 star, which is equivalent to 17.5 scrubs. Each scrub takes 24,000 XP (to fill all 3 slots) and gives 3 chunks, for a total of 420,000 XP and 52.5 chunks. If you choose to max out a gear to 5 star instead, it now earns XP 10% faster. Each overflow chunk takes 28,000 XP normally and 28,000/1.1=25,455 equivalent XP after the upgrades. For ONE chunk. To get 52.5 chunks you'll need 133,6364 XP (= 535 knock out wins), which is more than 3 times the amount you need compared to just scrubbing. Still, there are three reasons (that I can think of) you might want to consider maxing out your gears: 1. Your gear is not optimal in the process of scrubbing chunk farm 2. You have an overflowing amount of money so you can upgrade your gears WHILE you do the scrubbing chunk farm 3. 5 star is cool
@@haoyu53 52 random chunks, which is not enough to get the perfect gear you want, if you also like your chunks to match. will depend on the luck factor of how many of your chunks match. The 5 star is for dedicated grinders, not casuals who are not perfectionists!
It's also worth noting that collecting enough stars for any given brand of clothing (except for Grizzco and Amiibo, which are the only ones you HAVE to use sea snails to max out) will unlock badges for that clothing item, so if you want to collect badges or just have a specific brand logo you want on your splashtag, I would still go for it.
I honestly just think these multipliers are pityful considering the amount of in-game currency we have to use, but everyone's got their own plans. just in general the multipliers should be higher for the amount of cash we have to spend for them, something like... 3 stars - x1.05 4 stars - x1.10 5 stars - x1.15 (or x1.25 with unreasonable thinking) I think these multipliers are more worth the amount you have to spend for each upgrade. but either way, for now I'll stick to salmon run despite the chunks I get there being random 💀
@@AkaruiYAGI I think he somehow arrived at the conclusion that if we had decent exp multipliers, that they would ,for whatever reason, be behind a paywall or something lol. Crazy Or like maybe we should be grateful there isn't microtransactions so we should just let those damn near pointless multipliers slide. 🤡
I have one piece of gear at 4 star simply because I basically use it in in all my matches, getting it to 5 takes 200000 and I'm not quite to that level of don't need money yet, and no I'm never using sea snails for that.
The thing about rerolling: The abilities that you get are predetermined. You’re probably better off scrubbing than spending those snails for something that’s not even randomized.
i think it all depends on what your goals with your gear are if you are just using a set of gear to grind for chunks, it’s a more efficient use of your gold to scrub a 2 or 3 star piece and regain exp to reroll those subs. But, if you have a piece of gear with its bonuses exactly where you want them, it might be better to spend to rank those pieces of gear so you can passively gain chunks more quickly from the gear you are likely already using often. But, then again, if you already have your perfect set, then what are you getting chunks for?
Future chunks would be good for updates. Either one ability gets buffed to heaven or nerfed to hell, a new weapon you enjoy playing comes out and you want a good loadout for it, etc.
It is absolutely worth it. Consider that the gear you are boosting to 5 stars will generally *NOT* be your primary battle gear (which you only need to max ONCE at 2-stars and then attach your favorite chunks to). Instead, the gear you'll be boosting is your chunk farming gear. This is gear that you max AND THEN IMMEDIATELY SCRUB, then max again and immediately scrub again. WHAT THIS MEANS is that you are not simply reducing 10-->9 battles (no drinks), or 7-->6 battles (with drinks), but you are reducing MULTIPLES of this whenever you are grinding for ability chunks. If you do let's say 5 rounds of gear scrubbing, then that will be a reduction of 50-->45 battles (no drinks), or 35-->30 battles. (Calculating from the assumption that you're playing Anarchy and you get a knockout every time.) It's still not a *huge* reduction (and I hope they increase it because 4-stars pretty much *is* worthless), but it is in total a larger benefit than a single match.
Another way in which it is worth it is, as you say, if you have a lot of money and don't really have much you'll spend it on. This generally happens if you've been playing the game for a while, but boosting your gear to 5 stars will eventually just *go without saying* because we aren't as worried about running out of it. Even your maxed gear will accumulate chunks every once in a while -- I'm not sure how many matches the increased rate reduces for collecting chunks on maxed gear, but by nature, there will eventually come a point when you're not really that concerned about your coin count. *Edit: I forgot to address Seasnails. I never use these to reroll (since I prefer building steadily through chunks), so throwing these all on building 5-stars is totally acceptable to me.
6:54, now I don't really recommend doing this since it's quite hard to get sea snails when a splatfest isn't active. It's best to use these for gears that can't get stars through shops
I think there definitely needs to be better/ new perks to the star system. They could make the cost to scrub gear lower when you have more stars, but by the time you have gear with 5 stars, money might not be an issue for the player. I love the idea of lowering the exp cost to gain abilities on that gear as apposed to having a gear multiplier. You could lower the cost of the second sub drastically to make it more enticing to scrub at 2 slots, or you could lower the cost to get an extra chunk out of your gear dramatically, so that its easier to passively farm chunks with your favorite perfect gear. You could also be incentivized to upgrade your gear to five stars by making the cost to swap main/ sub abilities only one chunk, so you could use your favorite piece of gear for different weapon kits and switch easily. Overall the multiplier needs to be buffed majorly at the very least but these are some other ideas.
I like to get Ninja Squid on my favorite gear, so I may max out one piece of Krak-on gear, one piece of Rockenberg gear and one piece of Tentatek gear to farm the three types of chunks needed, faster... Since it's three different types of chunks you need and I don't win drink tickets that often. But then again, earning the abilities faster also means having to spend 60k more often/faster to keep scrubbing that gear over and over, so eh.. maybe in combination with extra money food tickets it's doable, but... yea, doesn't seem worth it for more than Ninja Squid on maybe two pieces of gear. 2:20 was awesome and hilarious, btw!
basically doing it because what else am I gonna use my money for? More gacha for pointless crap that doesn't affect gameplay? Least with 5 star gear I can get a long term buff for random chunks. Granted the majority of my chunks are from SR. General plan is have a 5 star set for each brand for the purpose of farming chunks post salmon run. Screw using snails beyond 3 slots though.
I'm honestly shocked that this is up for debate at all. Like, this is a game where you can spend 333333 coins on a locker cosmetic, I'm pretty sure 99% of people who get 5 stars on their gear get it just because it looks cool
For the amount of money you spend upgrading past 2 stars, is money wasted instead of scrubbing the gear. 5 star might be worth it on perfect gear you never intend to scrub and want to farm that 28000 for a chunk faster, but not as scrubbing slots.
I'll 5 star my gear simply because it's the exact same outfit I've been using since Splatoon 1 (Pilot Goggles, Black Inky Rider, Red Hi Tops). I used every single resource i had to make them as perfect as possible for ranked and turf wars, that way I won't have to worry about spending money on gear until something that interests me comes out. Otherwise it really isn't worth it, the pilot goggles are already at 5 stars with all the salmon run money I got ( I stalled my level on purpose to get more chances to rebuy it) and the difference is barely noticeable aside from bragging rights and personal accomplishment
Uh, I just realized that as he mentioned the title he wants, I just went and started clicking on all my banners and stuff to remove the ! Mark and I have it. And I don't gamble. Super-Duper Lucky Lucky Duck. How rare is this?
*Splatoon debuts on the WiiU* Me: oh, what a cute and cool game, I'll give it a try. *splatoon 3* Me: okay so i need to get this drink, use this many seasnail shells to get this piece of gear going and then play this many games to farm for money to farm for chunks and scrub gear.
I just save scum the shell-out machine now, if I get some shitty coupons I reset and wait the next day to buy them at 5k, if it's a title or decoration I go on and see what's the next one. It's slower sure but losing 30k to some really awful prize makes me lose any will to earn more
I got the SDLLD title during splatfest and meh.... I spend most of my money on clothes. Also, I have 100+ hours in and i only have like 5-6 banners. Is that normal? I play the ball machine everyday
Spending 35 snails to get a piece of gear from 2 to 5 stars doesn't feel worth it at all. I would recommend using coins. The multipliers also seem really low, but I guess in the _very_ long run they'll provide a good amount of value. Hopefully they buff those multipliers
if you play with gear that already has 3 abilities, and you earn a 'fourth' for 28000 xp, what does that actually do? do you get the chunk for it? or is it just useless
I can't see myself ever upgrading to 5* for the purposes of using that gear to grind chunks. Vanity for a main set? Yeah, I might do that, but not only spending money or snails on upgrades that could be used to scrub or reroll but then scrubbing the gear anyway and having to level it up again with only the slightest of time gain, PLUS having to play with suboptimal or not maxxed gear? No thanks. I'd rather spend the 50k for a scrub and shell-out roll rather than one upgrade, or 5 re-rolls (plus the 15 chunks) with the snails, and that's just for 3 stars. Unless the XP boost per star level drastically increases, I've got plenty of other important and more fun things to waste cash on.
personal opinion here. it's not worth it unless you're stupid rich. Compared to splatoon 2 you are spending far more cash in this game due to shell-out machine and slot increases that you couldn't do in that game (and arguably more than splatoon 1 even though you could buy rerolls for coins.) With that in mind you're probably never going to have 350k spare to upgrade one of the hundreds of pieces of gear to 1.10 modifier. You will get far more chunks in SR than this way and shell out machine is going to give more immediate results for you early on. Once you hit like level 100 and have made many builds then upgrading gear like ninja squid 3 sub swim speed that or stealth jump with 3 subs QR then by all means give them an upgrade... you'll profit after like 280k xp per piece. If the buff was like 10, 20, 35% or 20, 30, 50% then I'd say it's worth it but 10% is far too little when there are better uses of your money early on
I hope they change the System with the 3-5 Stars It's not worth right now to spend ether 350k Gold or 35 sea snails for that little Bonus of saving 1 round if you win all before that
1.1* is kinda sucky of an increase for 5 stars. Too much to invest with not enough of a reward. 1.5* increase would be reasonable The ONLY thing i can think of that this would be good to is if there is eventually a permanent splatfest tee like there was in splatoon 2 because iirc chunk farming is better on it
I often swap gear around depending on the weapon I'm playing (like going stealth jump ninja squid for my .52, or 1-2 mains of run speed up for my ballpoint), so I'm not likely to get a gear to 3 stars for a long while (Unless I decide to just grind xp with a certain weapon lol)
generally speaking, getting your stuff to 5 star is worth it... *if* you are going to consistently use that gear for hundreds of hours. like i am going to with my range blaster set lol otherwise the long term benefits won't outweight the short term cost
Yes, you're better doing this once you finish the things and out of the life cycle of Splat3; so spend the Shells on gamba and the cash to get it to 2* and then more gamba

I feel like it's something you'll do eventually not something you'll do right away, remember these games are going to get support for 2 years that's plenty of time to get loads of cash and eventually you'll have a surplus, also the XP modifiers could get improved in updates
5 stars is worth it for the flex factor and nothing else. and then also you can still get some chunks while wearing your main gear set.
If you keep using the same gear over and over... you'll gain chunks faster
Grizzco gear gives chunks fastest I thought?

@@youssefbencheikh8637 sea snails are such a huge waste for star power over 2 stars
I hope that Nintendo tweaks these multipliers later on
anyone else mad he didn’t cap zone right away at 2:30 😅
You're missing one thing: 5 stars looks cool on the gear screen
@@monte_2000 yea but also the 5 stars are cool and pretty
Probably still more efficient to just scrub your gears when grinding chunks tho
It takes $350,000 to max out a gear to 5 star, which is equivalent to 17.5 scrubs.
Still, there are three reasons (that I can think of) you might want to consider maxing out your gears:
1. Your gear is not optimal in the process of scrubbing chunk farm
2. You have an overflowing amount of money so you can upgrade your gears WHILE you do the scrubbing chunk farm
3. 5 star is cool
@@monte_2000 ^ don't forget, shops also are daily.. it's not hard for me to have 200K within a single day of grinding.

3 stars - x1.05
4 stars - x1.10
5 stars - x1.15 (or x1.25 with unreasonable thinking)
I think these multipliers are more worth the amount you have to spend for each upgrade. but either way, for now I'll stick to salmon run despite the chunks I get there being random 💀

Oh jeez, I never realized certain brands are more likely to roll certain chunks. No wonder my farming has been super inefficient
Note: There are badges for 30 & 100 total stars for all basic brands. Cuttlegear, Grizzco & amiibo DO NOT have one.
Oh my, I relate to you and your shell-out addiction...
I’m glad to know that someone else has the same uncontrollable gambling addiction
I have one piece of gear at 4 star simply because I basically use it in in all my matches, getting it to 5 takes 200000 and I'm not quite to that level of don't need money yet, and no I'm never using sea snails for that.
The thing about rerolling:
The abilities that you get are predetermined. You’re probably better off scrubbing than spending those snails for something that’s not even randomized.
Could always do the glitch
7:34 I literally like started out with that title. I don't ever remember not having that
i think it all depends on what your goals with your gear are
if you are just using a set of gear to grind for chunks, it’s a more efficient use of your gold to scrub a 2 or 3 star piece and regain exp to reroll those subs.
@@TwistedChaos4428 agreed, even if you have a perfect set for the moment having spare chunks for flexibility is a good strategy
Sure, I may be putting myself into crippling debt for diminishing returns, but at least I have an Emberz badge while you don’t
Fuck efficiency, I busted my balls to get the bear ears, they're gonna be 5* whether I wear them or not.
i got 2 5-stars for the toni kenza badge (worth it IMO)
(Calculating from the assumption that you're playing Anarchy and you get a knockout every time.)
It's still not a *huge* reduction (and I hope they increase it because 4-stars pretty much *is* worthless), but it is in total a larger benefit than a single match.
3:40 The infamous bobloblaw :D Too bad he wasn't playing the Bloblobber
I don’t plan to upgrade past 3*, but I’m glad to know why it even exists as I was like “okay, but I already have all the slots”
The XP gain is so miniscule that I'd honestly rather spend the snails re-rolling to get 3 random chunks
I would at least give an additional ap point for the primary ability on 5 star gear
Great video, good explanation, but please do explain why you didnt bother showing us the numbers on the screen as you said them?
I'll 5 star my gear simply because it's the exact same outfit I've been using since Splatoon 1 (Pilot Goggles, Black Inky Rider, Red Hi Tops). I used every single resource i had to make them as perfect as possible for ranked and turf wars, that way I won't have to worry about spending money on gear until something that interests me comes out. Otherwise it really isn't worth it, the pilot goggles are already at 5 stars with all the salmon run money I got ( I stalled my level on purpose to get more chances to rebuy it) and the difference is barely noticeable aside from bragging rights and personal accomplishment
u can farm hella chunks in sr
i miss gettin snails without havin to wait for splatfests...
So in short its POINTLESS to upgrade gear if you have all slots, more stars dont help you in combat.
I do not care if it’s worth it or not, I WILL have THE FANCIEST bowler hat out here
i dont think i can play this game enough to go that far with my gear. honestly im just happy to put on whatever clothes look cool

For amiibo gear? Absolutely! Go nuts! You'll never be able to upgrade any other way.
Getting gold badges on Salmon Run has netted me well over a hundred of each chunk already. However, I have like 3000g to my name...
Hopefully they buff those multipliers
i think 5 star gear is just for flex lol
if you play with gear that already has 3 abilities, and you earn a 'fourth' for 28000 xp, what does that actually do? do you get the chunk for it? or is it just useless
It just drops a random chunk
I’m currently tryna grind to get a set of gear that’s purely one ability the that clothing brand section is useful
personal opinion here. it's not worth it unless you're stupid rich. If the buff was like 10, 20, 35% or 20, 30, 50% then I'd say it's worth it but 10% is far too little when there are better uses of your money early on
Personally the 5 snails for the first boost in XP isn't to steep so I went for that after the first splatfest.
I hope they change the System with the 3-5 Stars
It's not worth right now to spend ether 350k Gold or 35 sea snails for that little Bonus of saving 1 round if you win all before that
1.1* is kinda sucky of an increase for 5 stars. Too much to invest with not enough of a reward.
1.5* increase would be reasonable
The ONLY thing i can think of that this would be good to is if there is eventually a permanent splatfest tee like there was in splatoon 2 because iirc chunk farming is better on it
I think it’s more efficient to do salmon run And just trade in extras for chunks
This was informative, thanks
I often swap gear around depending on the weapon I'm playing (like going stealth jump ninja squid for my .52, or 1-2 mains of run speed up for my ballpoint), so I'm not likely to get a gear to 3 stars for a long while (Unless I decide to just grind xp with a certain weapon lol)
1:17 What you probably came here for.
The only real benefit is to get you the badge for that particular brand
generally speaking, getting your stuff to 5 star is worth it...
*if* you are going to consistently use that gear for hundreds of hours.
like i am going to with my range blaster set lol
otherwise the long term benefits won't outweight the short term cost
Yes, you're better doing this once you finish the things and out of the life cycle of Splat3; so spend the Shells on gamba and the cash to get it to 2* and then more gamba
