Used it in the 80’s in Angola, 5,56 version. This rifle was a game changer for us, unbreakable, no jams, minimum maintenance plus could carry a 45 round mag, gaffer tape two of those mags head to toe, 90 rounds full auto.
It was cloned with the exact same materials into the R5 Assault Rifle. Was used extensively in the Angolan War by the former SADF now known as the SANDF...
I am from South Africa and this rifle in 5.56 was used, still used in military and police force. Was in the military called national service for 2 years and after 1 month service per year for 10 years. What an awesome rifle!!! FN FAL 7.62 (308) was our standard issue prior to the Galil (R4) These two rifles my favourites. Don't care if the modern rifles are lighter. The Galil weighs 8.8lbs (4kg) and was no problem even in infantry. Was your weapon, your lifesaver, you take care of it and It will take care of you!!! Rugged, accurate, durable, badass!! 😼 😎

A friend of mine had the 5.56 version in the late 80s when I was a poor college student . I tried to buy it from him in 1991 when I had a good job but he told me that he had fallen on hard times and sold it. Sweet rifle.
I really hate situations like that, people have to sell a "prized possession" due to financial hardships. You gotta help yourself before you help others tho!
Best combination of wood and metal next to the AK47. Israel knows what's up. Seems like half the population there owns one of these and yet they have less crime than western Europe.
The galil is actually a finnish design (valmet RK-62). Israel licensed the design in the 60's and modified it a little bit by adding a folding stock, bipod and modified some more minor details.
CAESAR IS THE BEST DOG EVER! I dont see how him talking about how many zombies hes killed is a problem, i mean, i discovered this gun *because* i used it to slay hordes of zombies, and then i googled the real thing, and fell in love
I had wanted one ever since I saw the movie "Savior" 1997 with Dennis Quaid. Granted, he used a Vector VR4, but the Galil and the Vector are nearly identical. During the 2000s, we had some tariffs against Israel, and the receivers were impossible to get. I finally bought one off gunbroker from a guy in Texas, I believe. Good rifle. I will never sell mine.
I fell in love with this gun when i first played Call of Duty Black Ops 1 when i was around 11 years old. Back then i just loved the aesthec, little did i know what an amazing piece of craftsmanship it truely was. Hope i can potentially be lucky enough to own one of these things one day, god willing.
through the 90s it was supplied mainly to cavalry forces here in the IDF, mainly due to its undying durability. My older brother, was a tank commander and had this exact one, and would swear by it over (what he called) the plastic M16 platform. awesome video as always hickok!
That’s why I only own AKs. Just not an AR guy but I don’t hate the rifle or anything. When me and my AR buddies go shoot, I always ask them, “ alright y’all ready to shoot your plastic toy guns? Always gets them going
the galil is definitely a marvel of a rifle. seriously good looking, well made, soft shooting, accurate, powerful and fun rifle. Getting my hands on one of these is definitely on my bucket list
The Galil .308 is a 7,62x51 caliber version of the Finnish Rk-62 assault rifle. The Galils were copied with license and manufactured with Finnish tools bought from Valmet. With similar precision obviously. The receiver is narrow and milled exactly like an Rk-62, the gas piston is identical, the gas tube is identical with it's attachment, the front sight is identical, the rear sight housing is identical.. My enlightened guess is that the trigger assembly is identical as well and shooting this thing is pretty much exactly like shooting an M76 .308 version of the Rk. A very common hunting version of this rifle here in Finland is called the Petra and it is chambered in .308 and .30-06.
hickok45 so I just picked up a 1965 Winchester model 94 saddle ring carbine in 30 30 with the case harden bluing and some scroll work on the receiver. what do you think it's worth it is in near mint condition only fired probably 20 times. I paid 400.
Nice video. Like the way you present things. I had the Galil as service rifle ( both ARM and SAR versions ) and it never let me down in the mud or in the sand. Then they changed it for the M4 which I carried for the last year of service , which was lighter ( and was a status symbol at the time) but it wasn't as reliable in the conditions I served, mainly going in and out of armored vehicles and banging the weapon hundreds of times in the process ... The lighter aluminum and backlit construction of the m4 was getting banged up and needed more ( gunsmith) maintenance and parts replacements including a bent gas tube. Conclusion : I got to know the m4 and loved it for all the known reasons, but if I have to choose what I would take into battle , in the same operational conditions I faced at the service I would stick with my old trusted friend Galil.
The last Galils were scrapped around 2006-7 ish from the IDF. As a soldier in an armor batallion HQ in 2005 I got to carry a shortened 5.56 Galil (Glilon) for some time... it felt like it was made from adamantium, heavy and sturdy. The tank crews switched to shortened M16s around 2004 and hated it because even with collapsed stock the M16 was longer than a Glilon with a folded stock. I knew one guy who got kicked from tank crew training for getting his M16's barrel bent into almost 90 degrees as it was in the way of the tank's turret gears as it was turning.
I enjoy hearing about the history of these 😊soaking in the wisdom of a man who’s lived a plentiful life, and dripping off of each sentence is loads of information, which only the smart know that the best course of action is to sit back, shut up, and allow his deep warm voice to pour around you like a fresh cup of coffee on a cool fall morning ☺️ cheers, love the vid 👍
man your a throwback Hickok. You remind of my dad & uncle, they used to take me shooting as a little little boy. It was just a different time. The good ole days. & the good old America.
I read in a book that the original Galil was issued to the Israeli Army for testing, sadly it was in combat, and it failed miserably in the sand. So the troops that were left brought it back and told Galil that it would not work due to sand fouling. So Galil redesigned it with a Kalashnikov action and that was where it started. It became a very reliable and formidable weapon for combat. Love your videos and if I find a weapon the I am interested in, your website is the first place I check. I like that even though you have your favorites, you always give each weapon a fair description and functions test. There is no bias. Thank you!

If you remove the back plate you can use the one end to open a tin of food. We used a version of the Galil in South Africa called the R4 was 5.56 and an awesome weapon.

the classic Galil will always have a special place in my heart, but got a 762N ACE 12" and have absolutely fallen in love with it. These are such great battle rifles.
I had the shortened version of this weapon in the army. Unquestionable reliability! Very very accurate weapon, the only downside of it is the weight. Fully kitted out vest with 7 magazines + weapon is HEAVY!
Lovely gun! We Finns love to take some pride out of Galil's success, as the Israelis purchased the blueprints of the Valmet's RK-62 rifles during the Cold War, on which the Galil was based on. And RK62 obviously was a Finnish twist on the good ol' AK-47. Just about everything from those dust-cover mounted sights to the simple pull-out gastube were Valmet's designs. Later on the more modern RK-95 took some inspiration from Galils, such as the skeleton style folding stock, pretty much closing the circle. Would actually love to see Hickok try out and review the Valmet & Sako RK rifles.
What makes the Galil unique is less so the engineering in it and more so the fact that it is designed to be used by undertrained morons in underfunded militaries, allowing you to pick between the two most common ammo types on the planet and take a significant amount of abuse while keeping reliability similar to that of the American rifles. Part of why its a popular gun in south America.
You would definitely enjoy more the 5.56 version of the Galil, that's the caliber it was meant to be fired, it's much more controllable and durable than the other versions of it, an amazing weapon that sadly disappeared
Thank you Hickok for demonstrating the wire cutting and bottle opening functions of this rifle which I read about years ago but have never seen. Believe it or not my auto mechanic had one of these, he wanted to sell it because it is worth so much.
I love how much more powerful the 308 is compared to 5.56. I just love that full size 30 cal cartridge power. You can tell the difference even through the screen. I feel the muzzle blast behind my phone 😂
HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN i like them both.. and to carry into a battle id probably choose 556 or 223 because theyre light and u can carry more ammo. However, if i didnt hbe to worry about carrying the rifle and ammo all day, id choose 308 anyday
To add to my comment below, the R4 was actually based on the Galil; didn't have the carry handle and the hand grip was plastic, but everything else is to a 'T'....
A friend of mine owned one, the bolt carrier broke at the point where the gastube connects to the carrier. Couldn't find a replacement and couldn't be repaired. So he turned it in and it was sent to the smelters. He still aches over this.
As far as I know Galil was based on Finnish Valmet RK series weapon, which itself is Finnish AK-variant, rather than original Soviet AK. Gas cylinder assembly looks quite familiar, rear and front sights are at same place, and so on.
Love the 308 calibre especially the Galil 308, a reliable rifle that was in Angola for the SADF used against the UNITA forces, may be an older gun than today’s piece of equipment but still a piece of history
I served in the SADF. we were issued rifles in 5.56 not 7.62. UNITA was anti communist and in a sense our ally in Angola. FAPLA and it's Russian and Cuban backed forces were the opposing forces that the SADF fought in Angola. Just setting your record straight.
This is my #1 gun on my all time top ten to own! A friend let me fire his and I've been in love with the .308 version ever since. My ultimate acquisition for it would be the Nimrod scope used on the sniper version.
The Galil was my standard issue rifle when I was in the IDF. I actually had the “Glilon” which was the shorter version in 5.56. I loved it. And no, the M16 and it’s variants coexisted with the Galil.
I was in the IDF. It is massive we used 5.56 nato. The "Gillon" is a short variation. very reliable. heavy. For decades the ARMORDE TANK CREWS USED IT.

Royi Dayan greetings from an ex Colombian soldier we also use the galil 5.56 against guerrillas ak
I’d love to visit Finland one day. Great bands have come from Finland. Also great race car drivers.
You would definitely enjoy more the 5.56 version of the Galil, that's the caliber it was meant to be fired, it's much more controllable and durable than the other versions of it, an amazing weapon that sadly disappeared
Yes. But in my state your not allowed to hunt deer with the 5.56
@@phillipwhidby because I live in the United States of America where noone is free to do anything
@@Dc-kk9bd its sad they cant give school guards a training ang atleast a DMR to control schools, sad you cant hunt with 5.56 anymore.
@@phillipwhidby 556 couldn't kill Vietnamese children let alone an American deer.
What a beautiful, simplistic design for an absolute monster of a rifle
I knew where this guy bought that. He opened a mystery box
Haha
nice black ops reference
They should add a skin for galil in csgo which looks like the old galil
but how did it come pack a punched tho ???
Looks like the Israeli's version of the FAL .. Pretty neat rifle! Like you say " You can't hate something chambered in 308" 👊🏼
Greg M If the AK and a FAL had a love child...Galil 308.
Greg M three oh hate
Thank you Hickok for demonstrating the wire cutting and bottle opening functions of this rifle which I read about years ago but have never seen. Believe it or not my auto mechanic had one of these, he wanted to sell it because it is worth so much.
HOW AM I THE ONLY PERSON LAUGHING ABOUT THE POT HITTING THE FLOOR SO DRAMATICALLY
Dude I'm dying. The way he looks at it.
Right before this: *let's smoke some pot right away here*
I chuckled a bit
You wanna know WHY you THINK you are the ONLY one? becuase you can't see other laughing on internet
Lars Vibstad exactly .ur right dude.
My 7 year old loves your videos...especially dead watermelons! Merry Christmas!
Say HI to him for me!
or her ;)
I love how much more powerful the 308 is compared to 5.56.
30 cal is the only cal.
To add to my comment below, the R4 was actually based on the Galil; didn't have the carry handle and the hand grip was plastic, but everything else is to a 'T'....
The Galil 5.56 mm was my service weapon 30 year ago
You can't break it no meter how you try
yehuda avshalom the kosher ak
Funny the ak is the rival of the m16 but the Galil is chambered in 5.56
yehuda avshalom mine Jammes, any suggestions?
A friend of mine owned one, the bolt carrier broke at the point where the gastube connects to the carrier.
Couldn't find a replacement and couldn't be repaired. So he turned it in and it was sent to the smelters.
He still aches over this.
@@patresepdw wtf did he do to it ?
Holy, I've never even heard of a .308 galil! Honestly though it would be such a perfect platform to execute that "battle rifle" role
Damnnn, my wallet is gonna feel this when I move to Texas next year. The galil is one of my favourite firearms, and in 308 it's even more kick-ass
How has that turned out for you? You find one or get the Galil ace instead?
this firearm sounds so brutal, i love how good the weapon sounds are recorded in ALL your Videos!
@@WildBlueYonderDay Dankie vir jou diens ! Respek.
By far my most favorite weapon in my arsenal so much fun to shoot
This is my #1 gun on my all time top ten to own! A friend let me fire his and I've been in love with the .308 version ever since. My ultimate acquisition for it would be the Nimrod scope used on the sniper version.
One of the best weapons on the planet in my opinion. Powerful as hell and indestructible. Israel makes some quality firearms !
God's chosen rifles😏pft

Too bad it looks like a minecraft gun. What you described was an AK-47 but it actually looks pleasing on the eyes though unlike this.
The Galil was my standard issue rifle when I was in the IDF. I actually had the “Glilon” which was the shorter version in 5.56. I loved it. And no, the M16 and it’s variants coexisted with the Galil.
באמת היית בצה"ל? "סטפן"?
bit you've killed a lot of innocent Palestinian civilians with it
ya mohamad go make some coffe....
משה והב 😂😂😂😂😂
I have a Galil 308. It's name is Antwan Roughowzer. For context, I also have a 1911, and her name is Gladys.
devwreck127 its funny how you name them haha
devwreck127 gladys dont love you how she loves me
I guess "Gladys" has got a three-cut thread-on compensator, too, right ?
I understood that reference
Beautiful weapon! Love that rectangular wooden hand grip
Estonian army still uses 5.56 mm version atm.Used it in the army and it’s a great rifle i can confirm that.
lol "i cant see it but maybe I can hit it"
BigLu. That was Hilarious. !
What kind of capitalization and punctuation is that?
And of course he hits it clean on the first shot after he said it! :)

CAESAR IS THE BEST DOG EVER! Must be fun at parties
The Galil is one of my dream rifles
TheycallmeNade after the m1a socom 16
TheycallmeNade stgw 57 is my dream.
U Mean -"my nightmare" 😉 in IDF after conscription (duty) , part of reservists soldiers get the "galil" instead the M4 / M16 (short) / Tavor
Or an 94.
Remington 700 chambered in 338 lapua and mcmillan stock
THE GALIL 308 IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE GUNS THAT I HAVE NOT SEEN IN A WHILE VERY VERY NICE FIRE ARM.
I'm not totally a firearms fanatic but I enjoy his videos lots of history which is great great.
4:10 only 10 seconds away, so close🤦🏻♂️
He should've added this animated earrape intro amirite?
TheWierdoNamed Z that’s so hickok
Let’s smoke some zzp
I was issued an SAR in my time in the IDF armor and loved it. Much nicer than the M16 we got later in reserve duty.
Alan Shore actually a lot of us don’t really like the m16.
I cant ever get over of how much of a good shot this guys is
You gotta review the Kimber K-6s. The fate of the internet depends on it!
Stay tuned.
Im waiting for mine to come in. Please tell me you have one good sir.
Sweet!
I first liked this cause of the COD games but I got more and more interested as time went on and I read more about it. Its a very unique rifle
CoD black ops did a good job of capturing the sound of it too.
@@kristopherdecker6549Insurgency Sandstorm did the Galil great as well. It’s actually treated as an LMG (deployable bipod)
Easily one of the best looking rifles of all time.
I think it looks bulky and clunky and ways a ton. I really don't like the aesthetics of it.
One of the most beautiful rifles I've ever seen. Always wanted one.
It looks heavy, but also quality. Thing is sweet. I'd love one too tbh.
“Its a beast” He wasnt lying we all know what he talkin bout , may we all take a bow to such legend that kept us out if the streets😔🧎♂️

From now on if hickok45 says he's going to get his bottle opener you know he means business.
The Galil. The IDF Defender. ACE 53. A rifle by many names, but a rifle by one purpose: Function.
I was in the IDF. It is massive we used 5.56 nato. The "Gillon" is a short variation. very reliable. heavy. For decades the ARMORDE TANK CREWS USED IT.
YES the folding stock is awesome
Best black ops gun ever.
Cpt. Shmitt not that, but hamr is better
I love Buds Gun Shop! Just bought a S&W Shield .45acp
Capt. Wild Bill I was just looking at the one with the laser 😍
Mr hicock. Don't you want to buy a slow motion camera to film couple of first shots on it?) I think,it would be very interesting for your subscribers)
There's plenty of other channels that have that, I watch this channel for its simplicity and it's purposely like that.
I love the format that they have, simple and generally only 1 shot, slow-mo shots are sweet but not necessary
Shaggy agreed.
Hasn't he done slow mo in past videos? Maybe I'm wrong and if so he DEFINITELY should. Not even about cost, Hickok has plenty of money.
