Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Phrygian Dominant and Harmonic Minor are modally related. To get the Phrygian Dominant, start with the Phrygian, and simply raise the third from a minor third to a major third. Or start with the Natural Minor, flatten the second, and raise the third one fret. Phrygian Dominant is absolutely one of the coolest neo-classical scales/modes!
In case anyone was wondering why it's called the Harmonic Minor: With the natural minor scale, you lose the great resolution when you go from the V chord to the I, which is created in major-scale harmony by the 3rd of the major V chord being a major 7th (aka the leading tone). The harmonic minor scale was thus designed to regain this harmonic effect, although it has its own drawback--a 3-semitone interval between the 6th and 7th--which yet another scale will solve...
Thank you for the comment. Too many cheesy guitar shredders are all about "exotic" scales, but don't want to actually understand the actual harmonic theory behind them. This guy probably doesn't realize that the actual pattern is a descending-only (ala melodic minor) due to the V-i "Baroque" change
Cool video! I'm a big fan of Trevor Rabin and he often ascends with the harmonic minor, pauses momentarily and descends with the minor pentatonic as fast as he can throw it out. He picks everything as well so it really snaps. A good example of this is at the end of "Hold On" on Yes' 90125 album. Keep up the good work!

Awesome video. The phrygian dominant is the V mode of the harmonic minor scale. He showed the A harmonic minor scale in the 1st mode (a-maj7), after contrasting it against the natural minor scale. Then he showed it in the 5th mode (E7b9 or Fdim7/E). It's mostly used as phryg dominant in rock/metal/pop as it's other harmonic uses tend to be less friendly to delicate ears. The A harmonic scale can be used as a dominant scale over E7, G7, Bb7 and Db7 (from least to most dissonant), or over any of it's corresponding modal chords (A-maj7, B-7b5, Cmaj7+, D-7#11, E7b9, Fmaj7#9, G#dim7)

Guys like Jerry Cantrell and Mark Tremonti incorporated that scale pretty well into their music. You should check them out. If you had to pick a favorite one of the 4 most basic scales in existence, major, minor natural, minor harmonic, and minor melodic, I would definitely go with the melodic minor over the harmonic minor, because the melodic minor allows you to play this harmonic minor but also allows you to not only lower that 7th back to natural, but also allows you to raise the 6th (and lower back too) as well. So if you love minor harmonic you should love melodic minor even more...

You should have mentioned the fact that this cool sounding scale, according to traditional music theory n composition (but what rules aren't meant to be broken?), is only substituted when descending the minor scale. Excellent idea with changing the minor pentatonic pattern, though. Most would teach to just add the note, like the blues pentatonic scale, instead of completely substituting the note. Awesome opening, reminds me of Chris Poland solos from early Megadeth. The Harmonic minor is pretty cool, but you can't chuck it in whenever you think it may be cool. Ok, good video but holy crap.... that guitar. That green I love it. You have changed my life. lol
In my opinion when changing minor pentatonic licks into harmonic minor ones the minor 6th should be included
Just sharpen the fourth and you got the hungarian minor... probably my favoriite of the minor scales.
One of my favourite scales same goes to the Harmonic Major scale :)

Tyler you should do a review of your favorite pedals that you use most often
Awesome how you morph the min pent lick to harm min👍
I prefer Neapolitan minor (harmonic minor with a flattened second) but that's more of a "chord scale" than straight harmonic or jazz minor are.
I use the weighing scale. It can be light or heavy.
Phrygian dominant is even cooler. Basically the 5th degree from the harmonic minor.
Hey Tyler, is this the same scale/sound used in the verse of Alter Bridge's Cry of Achilles? Working on ear training and it sounds similar.
Josh O'Brien yes
Josh O'Brien I think that it's the Gypsy scale that was used, it has the same notes as the harmonic minor scale but it has a sharp 4th, but I could be wrong though
The Gypsy scale has a few notes that have been stolen from another scale.
Anybody notice that the last three notes of this scale are used in the Twilight Zone theme?
GrumpSkull pretty much all scales are notes taken from other scales
I kind of like the way the whole tone scale sounds.
AS a 45 year old beginner with about 6 months how much music theory should I know and where do I start.
the coolest sounding scale is completely dependent on what the backing music is.
wish I had the patience for scales but over the years I just learned to play what sounds right .. don't recommend it but shit happens
Try Nicolas Slonimsky's Thesaurus of Scales, .... several lifetimes of experimenting with scales from many music cultures around the world!!
