Hyperpigmentation in Dark Skin Tones: A Dermatologist Shares Skincare Tips & Treatments!

  • Freckles, sun spots, dark spots, melasma...these are all skin conditions that fall under the umbrella of hyperpigmentation. It occurs when an excess of melanin (the pigment that produces skin color) forms deposits in the skin that are darker than the rest of the skin. While hyperpigmentation affects all skin tones, it's more common in darker skin tones and can be tricky to treat. That's why I reached out to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Alexis Stephens to discuss the best skincare tips and treatments for hyperpigmentation for darker skin tones.

I’ve so many questions for you..
Cyspera Cysteamine cream you mentioned contains hydroquinone. I was just wondering if the results are going to be long term or should we keep taking breaks in btwn & continue the cream.? Since hydroquinone is notorious for their side effects..! They usually come back ten times worse when we stop the treatment or do we just have to use it forever with intervals.?

It’s so important to find dermatologists who have treated people who look like you!! I am a south Asian women and we genetically and naturally have dark and thick facial hair. It’s not seen as “unusual” among south Asians bc it’s literally a part of most women in that ethnicity. My dermatologist told me I had a hormonal imbalance that was contributing to my facial hair. While I understand that hormonal imbalance plays a role in many women’s facial hair, I beleive that understanding different ethnicities and their skin is so important !!

OMG, Dr. Alexis sounds knowledgeable about this. Thank you for the information. Been suffering from terrible acne and hyperpigmentation for the past four months. One thing that stood out is, it's important to find a dermatologist that has treated someone that looks like you. I recently visited one, and she wanted to start me on Accutane. Now I get bad ance when I am stressed, and I have more than enough on my plate at that time, but it usually goes away. This time around, that sh%t scared, I felt like my face was attacking me. I just didn't think Accutane was the solution, knowing that I only get ance when I am stressed.

I try not to pick at my blemishes because I’m super prone to hyperpigmentation, its so bad. Even when I don’t pop or squeeze a pimple and just let it be, I’m still left with hyperpigmentation.. Its so frustrating. 😢😩

I was told the it's a combination of picking your pimples and it being exposed to the sun. If you make sure to wear a 30 spf sunscreen it can prevent the popped pimples from hyperpigmentation
