  • The first of 3 pieces I played at the Coventry & Warwickshire Organists'' Association visit to St. Martin, Barcheston.
This is an Allegro by William Herschel (1738-1822), written in the Early English style (manuals only). There's one slight compromise in this recording - the Barcheston organ doesn't have the extended bass compass of organs of Herschel's time. Thiis is still a "work in progress" and there are a few cornerrs that I need to tidy up for a final recording.

What a fun piece - and very well played too! (Especially as you might not have had a lot of rehearsal time on this instrument during your visit!)

Thanks Jerry. No rehearsal time, although I had played a very different piece just before this (too many mistakes to put the recording up!) I did try the various combinations before I started the piece, but one passage ideally needs either a third manual (which is how it's scored) or some nifty stop changes, and not knowing what was set on the pistons I fudged it all on the Swell - right hand clashes with left hand for a couple of bars). It's a rather unusual instrument - a lot of extension work, but it's pretty well done & works well. Some of the balances between ranks aren't quite what I'd expect, but I'd soon get used to it if I played there more often. I'd forgotten just how much better real pipes are then any digital simulation!
