    My experience with these tyres:
Continental TKC70, I used this one from Belgium to Australia and did around 40000km on a single set but at the end they were pretty much like slicks. Very good on road, okay offroad, bad in the sand.
Metzeler Karoo 3, I used this one in Australia and Patagonia. The rear tire lasted about 8000km, the front 20000km. Good on road, good offroad, okay/good in the sand.
Heidenau K60 scout, I have this one in the back with the karoo 3 in the front and am using it from chile to Colombia so far with 10000km on it and it still has a lot of thread.
Good on road, good offroad, okay in the sand, okayish in wet conditions.
Mitas E-07, I probably will get this one in the front as my karoo 3 is finished but I can't say anything yet about this tire.

This is a really good overview of some of the main contenders - I would have liked to have seen both front & rear and to also know is the mileage you were referring to was that of the rear - most likely it was. Impressions from a seasoned rider such as yourself are really quite valuable and I so appreciate so much these types of informative posts... I also think that the Metzeler Karoo Street would have been a good addition to this lineup - what I can tell you with certainty is these are Very sticky having a marked percentage of both Carbon Black and Silicone rubber compounds - the result is a tire that is very nimble and planted on road work, even when wet - trade-off is of course lifespan of the rear where I really only got barely 4000 miles (6.4k km) - the front still looking good, likely will go 8k miles (12.8k km) - off-road the Karoo Streets only slightly better then the street ADV tires in this review, having slightly more space between tread blocks, slightly more open in the center of the tires, drawing closer together on the sides for stunning cornering traction under brute force acceleration (if you just happen to occasionally be in the mood) - I did notice when running full pressure in the Karoo Streets that they tend to glare off rocks so reducing pressure is best when in rough off-road - and I have taken my R1200GSA into some pretty demanding, rocky stuff with these and they worked reasonably well. The price is on par with the other offerings from the big players... I recently got in an unusual ADV tire (rear) that I could Not find a single review on anywhere so will let you know a bit about that if it is worth anything at all... should be interesting... In any case thanks so much for all you do!

Thanks for the review! You guys are my favorite for ride reviews. My experience with the Heidenau K60 was the reverse of the Mitas E07 in your review. I found the E07 front to feel less planted with my 1200GSA and the rear buried more easily than the K60's, but it all depends on your bike, weight etc. Thanks again for the great ride reviews you guys do

I love the K60's on and off-road, the front is a little noise/shakey/vibration but that's the trade-off to have 50/50 tyres in my view - I hated the Anakee WILDS

  • @freedomofmotion

I went from k60 scouts to mitas e09 and the mitas are much better off road and barely any difference on road. Both struggle in the wet. The mitas is a bit more terrifying when leant all the way over as you really feel the gaps but it's fine.
I'd like to see your thoughts on more aggressive tyres .

Good review of popular 90/10, 70/30 and 50/50 tires. For anyone looking for something with a bit more off-road capability than the 90/10 tires--say an 80/20 tire--try the Metzeler Karoo Street or the Bridgestone Trailwing or the Shinko 705.

Good video but you should have specified that the wear differs hugely front vs. rear for the same tire model! I replaced three rear TKC 80s for one front TKC 80 (KTM 1090 R). The huge torque of an adv bike is the biggest enemy of a 50/50 tire.

Thanks for your very informativ report. I use Heidenau rear tyre with 50 nails on winther ice and snow conditions in Norway on my Transalp. Front is a Michelin with rough knobs as you show. Also 50 nails, which are shrewed in by a special pipe, and unshreved in spring. No noice issue, as sound is part of the riding experience. The Transalp is slightly trimmed, and make funny noices anyway when riding. I would like to compare Mitas next time. About kilometers i dont care, but the best grip on snowriding and ice is most important. When much snow, i use a selfmade chain , 5 mm and 12 crossovers to get a good snowgrip. This is maybe offtopic, but i want the best tyre for winther and snow use. Thanks for good ideas.

Great review my friend but can you do a review of the Shinko 705 Trail Master? Riders of GS bikes are putting 25-30k on the front and 15-18 on the back. Mitas E07 is a great 50/50 tire but be careful on the wet roads.

What about the temperatures you are riding in, I live in Tropical Nth Queensland. It’s not weight that effects tyre (tyre) grip and wear, it’s the ambient temperature.
A European soft tyre just about melts up here. Our winter is hotter than most of Europe summer’s.

If you go off pavement at all, Motoz Tractionator Adventure is very hard to beat. Fantastic in the dirt & gravel, far better durability than TKC80 (even bitter is), and great grip on the pavement.
These tyres shown here are pretty tame, not at all suited to real offroad. I got better mileage with my K60 Scouts, but how they perform is incomparable.

    • @IamthePMofAustralia

mld ...sounds like you had the first version, they were prone to cupping, but the later version is not. I’ve only done 6000km on the rear, and it’s about half worn, which is pretty good mileage on a 230kg 160hp bike. Around 50% of that has been on gravel roof offroad.

I used Anakee 3’s for a few years now - they’re decent - but I put the Pilot 5’s (trail on front, GT rear) on my 90/10 V-Strom and it feels excellent. I’ve burned through two sets of Pilot 4’s on my VFR and love them, so I figured the 5’s trail/GT combo on the ‘Strom may be worth a try. I’d love to hear opinions about this combo from anyone who has tried it . . . thanks.

You didn’t hit any of the tires I’m interested in but appreciate the tires you did do. I hated the mitas eo7. It was just ok on the road and shit in the woods. I didn’t even get 2500 miles out of the rear tire.

very interested in the Karoo 3 handling on-road, I know it will feel more knobbly, but the grip in the wet is my concern being in the UK. Seems the Karoo Streets are not very good off-road, but great on-road - probably more like the TKC70 (80/20 tyre)

Good review, but I have to disagree on one point regarding the Anakee wild: the noise. I personally didn't find them so noisy on my GSA compare to others. I did highway with them and honestly they weren't that noisy. But they wear fast, I did 4500 km before changing. I heard recently that the new Bridgestone AX41 are good on and off road, but don't know about longevity

Karoo3 is seriously dangerous, I've had poor experience with the front giving way numerous times and a friend of mine has had 2 serious incidents running Karoo3 front and rear. TKC80 or 70 everytime for us now, living to the end of a ride is more important than tyre wear. Karoo3 front is very noisy too. GS1200.

Appreciate the feedback. I have been over six months reviewing tires and reading forums trying to figure out what to replace the stock tire on my Wr250r with. For our six month riding season I have a 200 km daily commute on pavement, but on the weekends love hitting th forest roads and non technical trails (gravel, light mud, stone, sand). I had settled on the k60 or the .e07, but finally planned to order the e07 as I heard the k60 and read often it w as slippery up front in ththe wet. But you say that about th e07 And am hearing it from you for first time. Want something long life due to high mileage hwy but we do get a lot of rain also. Which one is more slippery of these two or can you r commend an even better tiRe than these two for my purposes? Really value and appreciate the work from you and the team!

I don't know how you managed to get 10000km out of that Mitas E07 , mines last about 6000km (back). Offroad capability only the first 4000km. I've switched to the E07+ now, to get more grip in mud, but that comes at a cost of another 1000km less life. ( KTM 1190R ) Luckily they aren't that expensive... I've got 2 new E07+ sets in the garage, maybe after that, I'm going to give those Metzlers Karoo 3 a try. And about road noise... put a decent exhaust on your bike, put a MX helmet on, and you wont hear the tires any more :-)

    Karoo 3 gone in 5000km?
    Rear - sure.
Front - I have serious doubts. Same for TKC-80. I mean, people are reporting 8000+, and most often it's 10000+ with TKC-80s. I know with the right style it's possible to toast some tires extremely quick, but I think we should stick to "reasonable values".

May I ask why you included the Anakee Adventure in this overview if you had no chance to test it (contrary to what you claim in the intro text)??
Instead you "compare" it with the TKC 70 - and simply assume the Anakee will have the same weaknesses? What kind of test is that? So, based on your experience with the TKC 70 you would not recommend to use the Anakee?? Say what??
Rather leave out whatever you had no chance to test yourself. Otherwise you may just damage your credibility.
