My wife and I run the Kenda K270 on our DR650's and we get 14k kms on average. We rode across Canada this pass summer (5800+kms) and the tires performed flawlessly. Best bang for your buck in our opinion. Great video Fortnine team! *T4S*
Sum4Seb i had a set of those on my DR. Fantastic off road. I do more commuting on mine now, so i went with the 705s. Anything is better than the stock tires though.
Michelin Anakee 3 is made from a single compound. It's hard all around and that shouldn't be a complaint. It's to send feedback to rider when riding off road. After all, it's a dual sport tire. Great video Ryan, as always.
I have been traveling across the Americas, started in Miami, through Baja, then Mexico down to Panama and across the Darien to Colombia and now entering Bolivia and over 32,000 km so far on Heidenau K60 Scout.s. On my second set after 20,000 km, and could have gone longer. The only issue for me has been the wet slippery red clay on the Ecuador border where I had my first off, exiting a corner they just slid and kept sliding until my inglorious off. Other than that they have been sensational.
I can vouch for the SHINKO 705's. Had them on a KTM 450 Enduro. ONROAD: never slipped on dry/wet pavement, great cornering, handled highways speeds and were smooth/stable. OFFROAD: excellent in dry hard packed gravel or dirt. Not so good in mud or grass.
I've run 705s on a KLR, a Tiger Explorer and now my Tiger 800. Best for the money period. I've got over 80,000 miles of experience on them. I now am trying the 804/805 combo on the 800 and love them for 50/50 riding.
Mark Jacobs Hi, was it Tiger 800xc or the road version? I'd like to buy Shinko 705 for my Tiger 800xc, but apparently they don't have tube tires in size 90/90/21. Can I use tubless tires?
Brilliant review of the current dual sport tires. You tell it exactly the way it is and get the essential points across succinctly. I do quite long off road hauls, like the extended version of the TAT in August 2015. I flew from England with my KTM690 into Montreal on Air Canada (bless them, cheaper than shipping and on my bike within an hour of landing) then crossed 14 states in the US before riding up to Vancouver to fly back.On that 7,500 mile trip I went through 3 rear TCK80's and frankly I should have used K60s from the Canadian border to Mississippi which was 70 per cent tarmac and then as it changed to 85% dirt from Mississippi onwards over the Rockies and across Utah and Nevada I should have used Dunlop D606's . Before I set off from Heathrow on Air Canada later this year to New Zealand with my bike I will be certain to check out your channel for any updates. Thanks pal for a great contribution.
Hey Ryan you do excellent commentaries. I've been riding over 50 years. I have had my motorcycle endorsement for 47 years.I have Been a motorcycle mechanic for 40 years. I mainly work on the Big Four Honda Yamaha Kawasaki Suzuki dirt and Street. I have been running the Shinko tires for as long as they've been out dirt and Street. I bought a shinko yesterday and I'm amazed of its performance. Definitely a 50/50 for me. Roads in my city are not good which makes shinko perfect for my everyday commute.
His videos are absolutely cracking. I’m using Pirelli Scorpion 🦂 Rally STR Tires on my KTM Duke 125 just had them fitted 200 miles ago and so far so good.
Hi Ryan. I believe I gave you the same comment last year. Not mentioning Mitas 07s (sorry i said 09s) is not talking about one of the best 50-50 tires if not the best in the market. Anyways, you still rock! thanks for your awesome videos!
I just came back from a 11000 km Tour on a BMW R 1200 GS (LC) equipped with a pair of Continental's TKC 70. The route went from Germany via the Baltic States, Finland, Norway up to the Nordkapp, then southward along the norwegian westcoast to Langesund, via ferry to Denmark and finally back to Germany. The outside air temperature ranged from 35°C (95°F) down to 2°C (35°F) with lots of sun, rain and even some snow. I came across all kinds of roads from perfect to dirt track. The TKC 70 proved to be a wonderful tire. Comfortable, low rolling noise, very reliable with lots of grip under all road conditions, good directional stability, agile with almost no diminishing handling after lots of wear and even providing a high mileage (I made the whole trip on one set of tires). And most importantly: There was no wobbling of the front tire whatsoever. I even considered using this tire as my standard.
I would give a good shoutout for the Michelin Anakee Wild-tyres, I have them on my R1200GSA LC and they handle really well on road as well as offroad. The rear tyre usually makes about 8000km's and front tyre somewhere between 15000-20000km's.
I appreciate your honest, no BS and highly informed reviews. On this review I appreciated your opinion near the end of tires for lighter bikes. I just bought a Versys X 300 and I'm considering the Shinko 244 as the stock tires are way too street oriented for my tastes.
The Shinko 805 is an awesome tyre; I went through three on my Africa Twin (see it in the F9 review video ;) ) my last one lasted from Utah off road to the Oregon coast THEN on road from Oregon to Victoria(BC) and back to Montreal.
I have to agree with your light dual sport suggestion. Used an mt21 front and 606 rear on a trip through utah and colorado in 2013. Great wear, and still sticky on pavement. Last year used the shinko 244 and loved it for longevity. Have not tried the anakee 3 yet, but the compound worked great in the wet commuting on my vstrom. Currently using 705 front and rear on my versys, and although a bit sketch at the limit or in wet, cost can not be beat. Keep up the great reviews.
Oh I watched this video 2 years ago and again today. My small 150cc bike is having now E705 at rear and 244 at front both from shinko and both were in this video😁 I think Ryan will approve 😁👍 great video
Great review Ryan. Yours is the only one with any decent information on the Tractionator GPS and has convinced me try one on my Ducati Enduro. I was struggling to decide whether to mount in the 50/50 or mostly off-road direction as I have a lengthy road ride in a few weeks. Considering I don't really notice the bumpiness or noise of the Pirelli Scorpion Rally and prefer maximum grip when venturing off-road, I'm swaying towards just leaving it in mostly off-road instead of flipping it around to suit the ride.
Thanks Ryan for more than good information for on/off skins. I'm in Michigan and ride rain or shine on an "07" 883 Sportster. Off road tires are good for most highways in this U.S. State; All the roads are "sucko". In my opinion 50/50 tires are the best choice, in the cities too! Thanks man for the great job! James Smith.
Awesome review R9; very comprehensive! My Mitas E-07's are just about shot, so this review is perfect timing - E-07's are great in dry dirt and even good wet dirt, but just okay on pavement (front floats on grooves). Shinko 705's are excellent on my Triumph Tiger 800xc for serious knee dragging and decent DRY dirt riding and slide very predictably on asphalt. I've been wanting Tractionators... but last I checked they're not in my size (90/90-21 front is limiting).
I love my TKC80 front tire - super stable, it absolutely got rid of the head sway I was experiencing with my previous knobby (the terrible IRC TR8 - buyer beware). I've got a Shinko 805 to try out next on the rear. Not sure if I can stray from my beloved TKC80 front even though I haven't tried much else...it just does everything I want it to!
I purchased a set of Shinko 705 tires based partially on your recommendation and ended up with a bad front . The wheel would produce oscillation at certain speeds . Now this is not indicative of these tires and I will try them again in the future but it illustrates a need to test the tires after they are installed. Give them some love as new tires are notoriously awkward but look for oscillation at higher speeds. I did get to try them at low speeds on broken rock and loose gravel in a hill situation. Despite being a terribly new person to off road they were comfortably stable. I felt like the bike was sure footed and responsive using these tires.
I love the Michelin Sirac tires. For me they are Perfect! lots of predictable solid grip on road and very good off-road capabilities! i have bought them for 3 bikes so far and loved them!
Ryan, love your reviews. and you are very quick to respond to comments, which is very helpful. I do have a question in this arena. You mentioned your "beloved Heidenau K60 Scouts," but they did not make your list. I am a fan of them too, mostly due to their long lives (19,000 km back and 25,000 km front on a 1200GS) and good all around handling. Am i living in the past? What am I giving up by running them?
Hello! The short answer to your question is no - you're not living in the past. The K60 is still a phenomenal tire in terms of mileage, especially considering how well it handles off-road. Expect to see a lot of ADV guys still wearing them in 2017. And 2018. And probably 2019. *But* the Tractionator GPS (from this video) does the same job as the K60 and lasts a smidge longer. Plus it's reversible and that brings some versatility to the table. Most people will never flip the tire around anyway, but the fact that you *could* flip it to get more off-road traction is enough to choose it over the K60. Hope that helps! ~RyanF9
I could not wait to tear off my Karoo 3's. Scary on anything but paved roads. Good on pavement, and gives bragging rights for visual design, but they are not for me. I liked the old Karoo 2's better. Even though the 3's last longer. The achilles of the Karoo 3 is the sideways grip in the loose stuff. Hope that helps:)
sweet! I'm running K60 scout rear and a TCK80 front on my 03 F650GS and love em so far, first season. Cool thing is that my size of K60 does NOT have the solid bar centre but has quite the spacing throughout the tire profile.
Second set of Annakee 3's and have never had a puncture. Mixed riding . 2600 km tour of Newfoundland no issues. Lots of mixed trails and beaches. Did get over 17,ooo on the set. They do hate wet grass. But then so do I ha .... Never had any wobble or slip in turns not even wet turns . 2012 KLR650 .
All your videos are top notch and straight forward as well as informative. I have a Vrod and Ktm 450 exc. You have helped me tremendously although I have not picked my choices yet. Leaning Michelin Scorcher as I have a 240 on rear. Ktm 450 exc looks like D606 rear and M21 front. You made awesome suggestions in all your videos. Tell me if you agree with my choices as I am in no hurry. Tomorrow will be fine, lol!!
Motoz Tractionator GPS was my tyre of choice ( mounted in the off road direction) on my Tiger 800XCx for 50/50 use. My buddy on a KTM 990 hated the Motoz GPS ( mounted road directions) on wet sealed roads. I also got good service from the Mitas E07 as a 50/50 tyre.
Thanks for the great review 👍 You didn't mention the Pirelli Scorpion MT 90 A/T which is great on road and pretty good on dry tracks and gravel - similar to the Continental TKC70. Cheers 😊
Just got in my new front tire for my 2020 Tw200 (Shinko 244 5.10-18) I've heard so many good things. The tread depth is a lot beefer than I expected! Time to replace the "death wing" .....
Something to mention with the Shinko 244 is the speed rating. They're only L rated, so if your bike does more than 75mph, don't get the 244. The K270 is rated for 93, so it isn't much better, but for someone on a KLR that does highway miles in between trails, being able to do 80 is nice.
nice comparison. ive run the tkc80 and d606 rear... d606 is by farvrhe best dual sport tire ive had. pushing it hard on and off road i got around 8000kms. the tkc80 is amazingly grippy on the road but it wears down so fast and the knobs start of so small that after 500kms the knobs are not even up to scratch in the mud and dirt. the tkc80 is great if u dont mind changing it every 2 to 3000kms. however the tkc80 front is awesome... so the ultimate pairing is d606 rear with tkc80 front.
If you own a new Africa Twin, beware - the rear 150 cross section limits your choices - no Tourances or Anakee's will fit (except Anakee Wilds) - Ive gone for Mitas E07's - so far, so good. Any chance of you reviewing these Ryan? Cheers for another great vid :)
Nice video. Thanks for the upload, dude. Personally I'm a big fan of the Pirelli Scorpion MT 90A/T... I've been using these tyres for a while on small capacity dual purpose motorcycles. I'd say that's about 80/20 or 70/30 Road/Offroad orientated. Great grip on the asphalt (even in the wet) and on rocky terrain. Not good in the mud, grass and sand though... It can lean to crazy angles in the corners on the asphalt and still has a great longevity. Plus the ride is smooth without any vibrations.
You do great reviews with lots of details and high energy. Love it. Any chance you might would do a review of the new Metzeler Karoo Street? I need to transition from the 90/10 Anakee III to a 70/30 tire. Understand you like the Shinko 705, but for now, I am comparing reviews on other tires. Unfortunately, the Karoo Street are so new, only one RUclipsr has done a review. BMW Rep recommended the 50/50 Karoo III, but I do not get that deep or aggressive off road. Thanks and keep up the reviews.
Excellent as always. As a new KLR owner I'm looking for what will replace the OEM tires and this was entertainly informative... which keeps my attention. lol I'm looking at the Michelin Anakee Wild on the rear and maybe the TKC80 on the front. I'd just go with the Dunlop D606 except I can't find them in the KLR rear's 130/80x17 size.
Thank you for giving us true and meaningful review. I ride a Africa Twin and you made my choice up. Going for the Shinko 805..ASAP P.S Revzilla is good and I rate them High on reviews and suggest them to any one and every one, but your reviews is so much more entertaining, fun to watch and I actually remember things you say, said, said and say... Haha Don't let the great spirit die!
Ryan, love your vids mate - well done - informative, entertaining with no BS. I have a KLR650 and I am keen to try out the new Motoz tyres - why - because I am an Aussie of course! I am however a bit confused as to which of their Dualsport tyres - the Tractionator Adventure or the Tractionator GPS - is the more road-biased hoop??? It is stated by Motoz that the GPS is 50/50 in one direction but more off-road biased in the other direction - to what percentage though and how does it compare to the Adventure percentage wise??? Care to share your thoughts???
Hey Andrew! The GPS is the more road-biased hoop... mainly because of the solid centre band. You should definitely choose the GPS if you care about longevity. The Adventure is better in the dirt but sacrifices a fair amount of mileage. I'd put the GPS as 50/50 or 40/60 (on/off) depending which way you run it. The Adventure is more like 30/70 all the time. ~RyanF9
Ryan you and this channel litterly and my life easier and save my life and all kinds of shit. You should be proud of the effort and truth you put in your work. 🙏🏽
Not a fan. Metzeler calls it a 70% on-road, 30% off-road tire. But in my experience the Karoo 3 wears away *way too fast*. Like almost as quick as a 40-60 tire like the E805, which is both cheaper and better off-road. ~RyanF9
Worst dual tired ever, the ones that comes on the Africa Twin (Dunlop). Have several friends that damage the inner tube of the front tire after riding off road with the stock tires (nothing nasty). Got my brand new AT and I'm looking for a replacement, even though current tires are brand new. Thank you for the video, now I have a good idea about where to look.
Hey Ryan, love your reviews. We are importing Motoz Tyres into South Africa after seeing all the good reviews. Would love to see your comments on the Tractionator Adventure, Desert and Enduro. Have you covered them in any of your videos?
Ryan is one of the best presenters I've seen on youtube :) I have a dual sport KL250H Super Sherpa & struggling to decide on the best tyre, 80% seal, 10% gravel, 10% dirt. Is the Skinko 705 still the best model?
Appreciate the "no BS" approach and well-defined categories of your review. I have the Shinko 705's on my Aprilia Caponord but don't have the courage or skills to take it off-road. 1998 DR 350SE has the Shinko 244 and they do well on that weight of bike but haven't tried any challenging trails with them. KTM 640 ADV has the D606's and feel very confident on gnarly forest service trails with them but rather noisy and wear faster than desired on pavement. Thinking of trying Motoz Tractionator Desert HT or Kenda Big Block for the KTM. Thoughts?
Mile hunter 93 how do? did I make a comment? sorry, I don't remember. however for the record, I put the midas e07 on my wee vstrom and love them. so surprisingly sticky on the bitumen
I just hit 10,000 kilometres on my Pirelli MT 60's on my KLR and they are still absolutely brand new. They don't get a great rep for some reason, but I've found them better that TKC 80's, Mitas, Dunlop's, ect. I want to try Shinkos next but it'll be hard to get another tire...
I see you like the Tractionators better than the Mitas E07, so I won't ask why you don't include them in the list. I would say that I very much liked the Pirelli Scorpion Trail II tires on my Tiger Explorer. They're 90-10 tires supposedly, but I think they beat the Anakee 3 tires. Thanks for the review!
Nice video mate, very helpful! I've been hearing a lot about Motoz Tractionators Adventure tyre (not the GPS that you reviewed here). Have you come across those in Canada yet, or heard any feedback about longevity vs on/off-road performance?
I've heard lots about them, yes. Haven't had a chance to try a pair though, so take what I say with a grain of salt haha. Basically, I hear that Motoz made the rubber far too hard. They did this in order to achieve good mileage, which was successful, since Tractionators will generally last a lot longer than the competition. But the downside is a *very* harsh and bumpy ride on the pavement, and mediocre grip off-road. I should mention that I know a few guys who really enjoy their tractionators, but they all run very low psi to make up for the rock-solid rubber. Hope that helps! ~RyanF9
Great video Ryan! Question, I just bought a Ducati Desert sled scrambler which comes with the Pirili Scorpions. I was thinking of the other options when these wear down. I do about 60 road/ 40 dirt but I live in Mexico. Love visiting small towns, the roads there can be cobble stone, mud and hard pack all in one day but I take the highway to get there. Also doing some fire trail type stuff. Any ideas on a good tire for that Scrambler? Keep up the great work!
It is a popular debate! Never really understood it though... the Anakee 3s are *much* grippier on pavement and about equal on the dirt. In my opinion, the only reason to go away from the Anakee 3s is the road noise (which is admittedly annoying). But from there, I'd rather take a Pilot Road 4 Trail than a Tourance Next. ~RyanF9
Thanks for this video. Really good info in here. I think I heard you say you ride a Vstrom. 1000 or 650? I have a DL650 and have been running the Metzler Tourance tires. I was wondering how they fit in your review and/or what your thoughts were on them. I may try the Shinko 705s next. They seem similar but slightly more dirt focused and cheaper.
804/805 in my experience gets significantly better mileage than the TKC80s. They're also at least here in the US significantly cheaper. It's a tiny bit more to buy one TKC Rear than to buy a full set of Shinkos.
Given that it's 2020, any chance we'll see another update to this video? Trying to make some choices, and I trust f9 over pretty much everyone else...
Sounds like that’s a no. And why do you trust him? I have mixed feelings. I feel like he only showcases stuff he gets paid to showcase 🤷🏻♀️

Since February 2016, Continental changed the TKC-70 and they don't wobble anymore. Excellent tyres for my R1200GS.

Great review man. I run the Shinko 805 on my super tenere and they are absolutely fantastic.
Best Review and explanation on Tyres I've seen .... Thanks from sunny Wales and keep up the good work :)
You can also consider the Michelin Anekee Adventure tire for 80/20 riding. I am really happy with it so far.
I've got the D606 rear MT21 front combo on my XR650L and it corners like it's on rails both on and offroad
For aggressive 90% off road on my Husaberg 570 I run the Motoz Tractionator D ( Intermediate compound ) and it's very good. Excellent all round.
~RyanF9
What about the Karoo 3s?
+1 Karoo 3s ??
The tire?
Need to find a professional review of the new Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR to compare with the TKC70
Did u find any?
i just got a set of Pirelli Scorpion STRs. ready for the season
Hey Ryan, long time subscriber first time poster
My question, how about e705 front and tkc70 rear?
Love your stuff, cheers from Chile
A3's just HOWL! Came on my GS, and couldn't wait to get them off!
Like my 85/15 Metzeler Tourance on my GS. Great commuting / touring and can turn off onto truck trails and fire roads. Good balance if you ride a lot.
Spring 2022 and I’m going to try the Heidenau Scouts for pending adventures.
Please review the Avon trail rider and Pirelli MT60 RS and MT90 tyres.
I have the Anakee 3 on my XL1000v but as far as i know its a duo compound tire. i absolutely love it by the way
Thanks for the great review 👍
You didn't mention the Pirelli Scorpion MT 90 A/T which is great on road and pretty good on dry tracks and gravel - similar to the Continental TKC70.
Cheers 😊
Just got in my new front tire for my 2020 Tw200 (Shinko 244 5.10-18) I've heard so many good things. The tread depth is a lot beefer than I expected! Time to replace the "death wing" .....
On my Bike TKC 70 are awesome. Not worried about $100 bucks
enjoyed your video
Something to mention with the Shinko 244 is the speed rating. They're only L rated, so if your bike does more than 75mph, don't get the 244. The K270 is rated for 93, so it isn't much better, but for someone on a KLR that does highway miles in between trails, being able to do 80 is nice.
Your knowledge is amazing.
Thanks. Very useful for me. Going with the Shinko e705s
705s on my KLR. Great tire 👍🏾 Mostly street riding.
Excellent evaluation. Thank You.
nice comparison. ive run the tkc80 and d606 rear... d606 is by farvrhe best dual sport tire ive had. pushing it hard on and off road i got around 8000kms. the tkc80 is amazingly grippy on the road but it wears down so fast and the knobs start of so small that after 500kms the knobs are not even up to scratch in the mud and dirt. the tkc80 is great if u dont mind changing it every 2 to 3000kms. however the tkc80 front is awesome... so the ultimate pairing is d606 rear with tkc80 front.
Great tyre review. Thanks.
Thanks! I'm heading to Fortnine to buy some Shinko 705s!
Going for the Shinko 805..ASAP
P.S Revzilla is good and I rate them High on reviews and suggest them to any one and every one, but your reviews is so much more entertaining, fun to watch and I actually remember things you say, said, said and say... Haha
Don't let the great spirit die!
I’d recommend the Shinko 244 Dual Sport Tire if your on enduro on a budget but I’d recommend Dunlop’s if your going to spend more time off road
How about Michelin Anakee Wild? Looks like a really good tire?
I appreciate how you stack them up . Thanks
~RyanF9
Thanks mate. Off to have a look at some today!
Do you recommend Shinko 705 for Middle East where temperatures liter higher than other areas?
Thank you very much for your excellent reviews.
Ryan you and this channel litterly and my life easier and save my life and all kinds of shit. You should be proud of the effort and truth you put in your work. 🙏🏽
Wow that was very descriptive
awesome to see a new video!, what's your thoughts on the karoo 3?
Love you Ryan!
Hey Ryan, love your reviews. We are importing Motoz Tyres into South Africa after seeing all the good reviews. Would love to see your comments on the Tractionator Adventure, Desert and Enduro. Have you covered them in any of your videos?
For a 250 or less dual sport that is on dirt a lot try the Kanda K760.
An MX tire that is DOT and runs OK on roads.
that was very enjoyable to watch, keep making them
Ryan is one of the best presenters I've seen on youtube :)
I have a dual sport KL250H Super Sherpa & struggling to decide on the best tyre, 80% seal, 10% gravel, 10% dirt. Is the Skinko 705 still the best model?
you are f*cking Awesome! straight to the chase! well done! this is quality material on youtube
Eager to see you test both the new Avon TrailRider and TrekRider tires. ;)
Awesome video! Great job!
Thoughts?
I definitely remember some Metzeler tire that look just like that
hey bud
great tire review
i have the dunlop 606,,,,(thumbs up)
Alaskan dual sport Chris
Yulinbilla David William you are late to the party
Mile hunter 93 how do? did I make a comment? sorry, I don't remember. however for the record, I put the midas e07 on my wee vstrom and love them. so surprisingly sticky on the bitumen
how so
I just saw that comment re Alaskan blahs blahs... that wasn't me
Great vid mate! Thanks! Is that GS 800 in the back yours? Comparing with you the v-strom, vibration wise on the highway, which is better? Thanks
I'm considering Mitas E07 or E09 for my next Tiger xc rear tyre. Are you saying the Tractionators would be a better alternative?
Great video!, but what about the Pirelli scorpion trail versus the Michelin Anakee?
What about metzeler tourance next vs anakee 3? That is a popular debate it seems ?
