All he knew is that he was going to Black Mesa for something, and then his helicopter crashed and everyone else with him died, with Shephard being the only survivor. After that, he's almost instantly thrown into conflict with two separate alien races, fails to escape thanks to some man in a business suit, and is forced to disarm a nuke and kill two giant insect-like monsters.
But, after all of his struggles, he is locked away by the G-Man, never to be seen or heard from again. Since no one knows of his existence, it is likely that he can't be saved by the Vortigaunts either.
Well, he certainly didn't go through the same shit Freeman did, but it is still very tragic
100% my day

You know after watching a couple sfm
animations of gordon freeman really made realize that gordon freeman is just an ordinary man just like the rest of us, he has a family, a job, and a life,

Imagine being him, working your boring life, working a boring job, just push a rock there, move something in there, and then one day, you see the end of the world, partly caused by you.
You see your collegaues, your friends, all getting ripped apart, burnt by lasers in half, crushed in elevators, and mutated into unimaginable monsters.
After enduring such tortures, and finally getting to the surface, you see that the ones you wished were here to save what remained of you and the others, you see them massacreing everyone in sight.
Imagine that feeling.
I'm pretty sure having a cool ironman suit at work is not boring
