Why isn’t CarPlay the answer at least for infotainment apps? It already works really well! I find the current setup to be clunky and subpar for such an expensive vehicle. Alexa won’t play anything on Apple Music, there’s no Apple podcasts, she often won’t make a call I request, etc. Oh and Audible doesn’t sync with my phone. CarPlay just works. Seems like a no-brainer to me for these kinds of apps. The same is probably true for Android Auto.
It’s a bandaid fix. I feel the best analogy is comparing it like this. Adopting CarPlay for Rivian is like a chef at a high-end, Michelin-star restaurant choosing to serve pre-packaged, mass-produced ingredients instead of crafting each dish from scratch. While the pre-packaged ingredients (CarPlay) might be convenient and familiar to some guests, they limit the chef’s creativity and control over the meal’s quality and uniqueness. By sticking to their own handpicked, fresh ingredients (Rivian’s custom software), the chef can craft a truly original and tailored dining experience that reflects their signature style…one that can’t be found anywhere else.
@@MikeKantorskiTech I cannot disagree more with you. It's not a bandaid or bridge if the event is never going to happen. You don't understand how much effort it takes to support just Android and iOS. Only a very small number of large developers will have the ability to rearchitect their apps to support the APIs and libraries for running on Rivian, Tesla, etc...along with the ongoing updates, maintenance and bug fixing. If apps can't be projected to the vehicle screen, then they will remain on our phones and that experience sucks. I don't understand the recalcitrance expressed by Rivian and Tesla on this subject, especially as the Chinese EV makers are adopting the technology for their customers.
I appreciate your take on it. It’s fascinating to me how dividing this topic is in the car industry. Maybe one day we will just be given the choice. I’m sure Rivian is tired of it lol
@@andydmacd I agree with you. the effort to keep in line with iOS is probably daunting for them...there should be a way though USB to mirror your phone which would probably covers 80% of peoples' needs.
Adding CarPlay would allow Rivian to focus efforts in other places. I love my Rivian but probably won’t buy another one due to the lack of compatibility with the iPhone. More specifically Rivian interface doesn’t maximize the iPhone’s full capabilities. Same for Tesla.
Please dig deeper any updates to the charging profile for Gen2. The Gen2 Max Pack does not charge even as good as a Gen1 large pack. The charging curve needs to be updated through the software.
I’ll gladly share if and when any information comes out. Unfortunately there’s not much information on this, I know Kyle spoke somewhat about this on his most recent video.
@@MikeKantorskiTech Oh I just figured if Wassym held a Q&A that this question would have certainly come up, how has no one asked him about this when the Gen2 has been out for months already.
As a current Tesla owner I’m very interested in a R1T for use in my home state, the Colorado mountains. The current charging issues are my biggest impediment to adding a R1T to my vehicles to replace my aging battleworn Tundra. Please see if the R1T mk2 charging can be fixed with software. This would tip the scales on my purchase.
@@grumpyhighlander There are charge curve tests done on Gen1 Max pack that are much better. The charging will get better. My guess is their main focus is R2 so everything is being shelved until that is ready. It sucks for R1 owners but probably necessary in the short term.
Tesla EV is not marketed by Rivian but those that trade in a Tesla have reported it’s a real credit. Unfortunately it looks like it’s only for Tesla’s. But you could always call Rivian’s sales team and see if they would apply it for your bolt too
Only word is that they know it’s something they’ve said in the past. They want to do it. But no other updates. Seems R2 is taking up most of their bandwidth. All resources have been shifted to focusing on getting it ready for 2026 launch
Does Rivian intend to continue updating/improving “highway assist” on Gen 1 vehicles? It sounds like they may be freezing the capabilities of Driver + highway assist to focus on Gen 2 Rivian Autonomy Platform. For those like me, who bought a 2024 just before Gen 2 was announced, this is disappointing. Are they adding more mapped roads for Gen 1 highway assist?
It seems to all depend on hardware capabilities of Gen 1. If they can add it they will. I’d say yes to the addition of more mapped roads for Gen 1 as they continue to have rabbit vehicles spotted in the wild. Originally I felt the same way about my Gen 1, but most of the highways I drive are mapped well
They are working with Google to enable Google casting as well as integrating AI features. Casting works with iPhones, but correct there is no plans for Apple CarPlay, as they are sticking with creating their own software.
@ and that’s why I won’t be getting one. Not giving customers what they want. No thank you. Customers have made it clear that want android auto and Apple CarPlay in there vehicles. To not listen to them is a bad call. Just not like hurrying to get native NACS on all these EV’s is a bad call.
@roberto.gallegos integrated apps working with the system is a better route forward in the long term than just throwing CarPlay over the display. As far as nacs goes, it’s coming. Honestly doesn’t matter when, adapters will be need for a long time either way
@@MikeKantorskiTech people don’t want to use adapters. They don’t mind having one for emergencies. It’s just another failure point. CarPlay is so much more than that. People want to be able to say Siri give me directions here Siri where is the nearest charge station Siri call so and so message so and so etc. and have it combined with the phone and car. They don’t want a whole other system separate from their phones.
@roberto.gallegos Rivian is working on the voice assistant improvements with full integration to do exactly all of those requests. But I understand people want it now. As for adapters, unfortunately they are apart of our lives no matter what you have. Eventually they won’t be needed but it will be a slow process.

Ability to cast on road trips, my wife and I watch a lot of shows and sharing a phone screen is not the best experience. Also that it unlocks more functionality out of the screen with thousands of apps supporting it

I can't wait until RAN opens up to non-Rivians. I own an Ioniq6.
