What is the most efficient way for someone who already knows semi-fluent Mandarin and written Chinese to learn Cantonese? Any rough shortcuts?

I guess so. People that live in Guangdong get used to speak bilingual languages. So we will say both. For example like refrigerator, 冰箱 in Mandarin or 雪柜in Cantonese. we will pronounce 冰箱and 雪柜 in Cantonese pronunciation

I have the same problem as you, as someone who has been exposed to Malaysian Cantonese more often than I've been exposed to Hong Kong/Guangdong Cantonese. For example, I'm pretty sure the way she pronounced 抱 is not the same as how it's pronounced in Malaysian Cantonese, so I was really surprised to hear the rising tone she pronounced it with. The way she pronounced it reminded me of the second tone of mandarin. Really interesting

Reading the title I was reminded of a video I watched. I think it was on your channel. It's about Mandarin speaking Chinese using Cantonese instead. What stood out for me was that they have the same accent as English People speaking Cantonese (like Mr Gregory Charles Rivers that have had many roles in TVB series).
I'm not saying that to make a laugh at them. I'm sure that Mr Rivers has more Cantonese vocabulary than me. I'm just wondering what vocals or tones are so similar between Mandarin and English that would make them having almost the same accent to my ear when they try to speak Cantonese.
