- March 16, 1962: "La primadonna assoluta" Maria Callas with the NDR Symphony Orchestra (today: NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester) in the Hamburg Music Hall. In the celebrated concert conducted by Maestro Georges Prêtre, the soprano sang arias by Jules Massenet, Georges Bizet, Giuseppe Verdi and Gioachino Rossini - including Massenet's "Pleurez mes yeux" from "Le Cid", the Carmen-showpieces "Habanera" and "Seguidilla" by Georges Bizet and the aria "Nacqui all'affanno" from "Cenerentola" by Gioachino Rossini. The NDR Symphony Orchestra performed opera overtures by Berlioz, Gounod, Bizet, Verdi and Rossini.

Callas was past her prime here, but listening to her at any stage of her career is always a treat. Rest in peace.

Wunderschöne live Aufführung dieser romantischen Meisterwerke mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Instrumente sowie herrlicher Stimme der unvergleichlichen Sopranistin. Der ebenso unvergleichliche Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester in verschiedenen Tempi und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Wahrlich historische und wervolle Aufnahme!

Such wonderful concert, Maria Callas at her best ( maybe over her prime but so very expressive) . I loved watching Pretre conduct, loved his finesse, gentle, charming smile and quiet joy and passion.

I wonder about the definition of classic music.There is often a special radio station in every country called classic.Do they play music from the beginning of human kind till the end..or?
Tricky one! Here in Germany it is a common term for symphonic, orchestral or vocal "Kunstmusik" - starting somewhen in the 1700s with Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and reaching into today's time. That's how it is recognized and used by a majority of the music lovers today here. Pretty much anything that has been written for a performance in a concert hall. ;) Musicologically precise, here in Germany, it would refer to a period from around 1730 to 1830 - Haydn, Mozart and the early Beethoven who later on surpassed this period.

Bene la Callas,anche se non era proprio al suo meglio. il direttore d'orchestra lascia molto
a desiderare per quanto riguarda le sinfonie di Verdi e di Rossini. i Tempi staccati vengono tirati via con molta superficialita' e ne consegue che il fraseggio e la cantabilita' ne vengono a soffrire,non avendo la possibilita' di esprimersi compiutamente nella loro naturalezza
espressiva. Karajan diceva che dirigere l opera italiana esige un grande controllo della dinamica,dei tempi e sopratutto una grande conoscenza dello stile interpretativo di questa
musica. PER AVERE UN IDEA DI COSA SIGNIFICA INTERPRETARE LA SINFONIA "LA FORZA
DEL DESTINO" BISOGNA ASCOLTARE TOSCANINI OPPURE FRANCO FERRARA.
PER LA SINFONIA "IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA" ,BISOGNA ASCOLTARE ANCORA TOSCANINI.
QUESTI SONO I GRANDI INTERPRETI !!
She is beautiful and expressive, but I think you can feel how sad she is all the time. Something inside her is broken. Every time I look at this recording I feel pity for her . What a great artist and how badly she has been treated.
As in the dvd, I don't think the concert is in the right order. The carnation MC put in her dress happened in the second part of the concert. And she wouldn't have started with Massenet's Le Cid which is a difficult aria to start with.
